Well, I guess this it. Iâm clocking out. :) Thanks for reading some of my adventures at the MCTCAO.
What I learned from the Office
Is 200 hours truly enough time to get to know new people and to make an impact on their lives? Maybe, maybe not. One thing is for sure that I will remember the people from the Tourism Office because they, despite my quiet and shy personality were able to accept me and even miss me when Iâm gone. Hereâs a list of lessons that I learned from my 200 hour experience:
Donât be afraid to be yourself. This is true. Wherever you go, whoever you are with, you must always be true to who you are. If you chicken out and become a hollow person of yourself then when time goes by itâll be hard to express your real personality? Ne? You might even find someone who has the same qualities as you do. Aha! Is that a new friend I sense?
Never let othersâ laziness become a reason for you to become lazy. At some point I found myself surrounded by OJTs that just sat around and texted on their phones when no one was giving them orders. I see that is acceptable for them to do, as for me, you are in a place of work, you should in be working or looking for something to do in the office rather than look into your phone or update your social media accounts.
Always speak when spoken to. Do not be afraid to make eye contact with someone who is directly addressing you. When you speak up it shows that you respect the person that you are talking to because they didnât waste their breath talking to someone who doesnât talk back. Haha. This could also be âanswer, when you know the answerâ I almost got offered a job that day. =)) Thanks, Sir Ponch. Iâm impressed that he was impressed with me and my school. (hopefully even after my report..)
Include people into your zone. If not, walk into theirs. Donât be afraid to step out of your comfort zones because while youâre hiding away there you might miss a lot of fun and exciting opportunities. Never say no to charades again. :))
Learn to take greater responsibility for your actions. Try doing it through small steps: adding it day by day through your routine and your work. Donât let others answer for your mistakes.
Be everyoneâs friend. This doesnât mean you should go through lengths to be everyoneâs âbestestâ friend for eternity or something along those lines. This just means, donât limit yourself to people who youâd normally be friends with. It is similar to leaving your comfort zone but a little different because it tells you to be nice to everyone and make sure that both of you get along. This makes working together easier.
Donât push your beliefs on others. Iâve noticed in the office that most people clash whenever they express their strong views on a certain idea. It is stimulating to share your ideas openly with your friends and coworkers but it shouldnât reach the point where both of you are in a heated discussion where it doesnât even matter whether either of you are right or wrong. You just get carried away and often ruin your mood or even the officeâs aura.
Make friendships that last a lifetime. Life is best experienced with the company of your friends and most times those people even become your family. Itâs always nice to have a friend wherever you go, especially someone whose been with you to experience a new part of your life so if you can keep them close or donât let go.
Week 6: Itâs time to say goodbye
May 18
First things first, how do I get the right certificate? Oh how do I? Huehuehue. Started making templates of certificates to be filled up. Insert random office job here.Â
May 19Â
Came in, like any other day. Office work here, office work there. Thinks I should know how many hours I need to finish my OJT... et voila~ Ms. Mina (the one in charge of grading me - she took over when Maâam Monet gave birth around April 26, I think I didnât mention that earlier) declared that I had finished my 200 hours and had even exceeded by 3 hours.
Week 5: After the Fall
May 11
Everyone was pretty tired from the night before. But all in the same we did the usual office work. There wasnât anymore SAW to worry about so we were going to be okay. The Tzuchi foundation was organizing to meet at the Sports Complex for Mothersâ day as well as to raise awareness towards to the plight of people in Nepal after the earthquake. The Tzuchi was incorporated into the morning announcements and Mayor Del even carried a wooden box throughout the crowd for donations to be sent over to Nepal.
Later that day we were all invited to attend a pro-K-12 rally that would be held at the Sports Complex. The office made us go, whether we wanted to or not because 50% of the staff were required to go, to make it look like the Marikina Government was behind the new educational program all the way. Hereâs us waiting at the back entrance of the City Hall for the rest of the employees to start lining up. There was media coverage from TV 5. We didnât stay long as soon as it hit 5, we went home and so did the people from the MCTCAO office.Â
May 12
We were back to the same old routine at the office: photocopying, printing, and typing. I was sent to notarize the contracts of the instructors of the SAW. Normally you would have to pay 150php for a document to be notarized at the Legal Office but because the SAW was a city event the fees were waived. (Iâll have to check back on the fee though. hehe) After that I had to bring it over to leave it at the Mayorâs Office. The most time consuming and patience building task in the City Hall was to route the documents in all the offices it needed to be filed in, such as accounting, and budgeting.. or whatever office it is. Itâs good if you are able to talk to someone nice at their office, otherwise you have to smile politely while they snark at you. Â

Week Four: PUSH WEEK
May 4 - 9
I dubbed this week, PUSH week because we had to work double time to have all the preparations ready for the SAW culmination. Weeks before we had already made our cut-out decors for the stage and the photo booth for the lobby.Â
To sidetrack just a little bit with something totally unrelated to the SAW, the office held one of their required reports, from JC, Erica and Raffy. When you apply at the MCTCAO, they require that you research and report a topic that either Sir Oliver, head tour guide, or Maâam Tet would choose. Based on all the reports I witnessed, all of the reports was related to Marikina City. Here are some photos of Erica, Raffy and JC (May 6, Tuesday)
When you wake up really early and go home late, you learn to appreciate the time you have and use it to go to sleep. It was hard doing more work when I got home because I was exhausted. So I ended up just doing it again at the office.
Week Three:
April 27
The usual at the theater: Help out with organization, check the attendance, assist anyone who needs help. Build socialization skills by talking to other OJTs: best friends JC(John at the office..because Ms. Joeyâs boyfriend is also JC) and Raffy from Asian College.Â
Heard about SPES for the first time. And tried to learn what it was about. I initially thought it was a program for Special Ed.Â
April 28
Setup at theater for another photo shoot
Get called back to office to finish AVP
Meet new OJT Aprille and SPES Camille
Spend the rest of the time at the office staring at a computer screen trying to find the right layout for the AVP. And of course, some office support.
April 29 - 30
Befriended Charlie, who was a part of the SPES program from PLMAR.
No one bothered me from my PC area. Still working on AVP.
Would sneak away to the theater whenever I could because my eyes hurt from staring at the monitor so much.
SN: the week was pretty much uneventful.
Week Two
April 20
My first Monday at the office. Monday meant: I had to wear my school uniform and to arrive extra early to attend the flag ceremony. No one will tell you that it will be hot. So if ever you plan on joining the flag raising at Marikina City Hall you should always be prepared with a handkerchief, if you want you may also bring a fan.Â
I finally saw Mayor Del that morning. And not on of the Marikina Newsletters or handbooks.

Week One
April 15
Arrived before offices opened.
Spent an eternity waiting to be assigned work. (psh, not really, like 15 minutes wasnât a long time.) They didnât really pay attention to me because it wasnât 8:00am yet. We were waiting for Ms. Monet, the one who was in charge of the OJTs.
My first job interview accomplished by Ms. Monet (I think it went well) I answered all her questions with a smile on my face. (Yaâll know how awkward I can get) Little tidbit: Ms. Monet doesnât believe in peaceful negotiations with Mindanao (Bangsamoro).Â
Welcomed to the office. Introduced to everyone in the office, aside from Maâam Tet, because she was on maternity leave.
Introduced to the world of bundy clocks with my very own time card (graphical representation not accurate because I didnât use my phone at work that day heh.)
Got assigned to make a: calendar layout (Reminder to self, go to MS Publisher)
Found out where the Teatro was located (Next to the Library)
Met Erica, a fellow OJT who taught me the ways of the office (Thanks Erica :D)Â
Met Sir Jeordell. (I thought it was weird that someone 3 or 4 years older than me was sorta my boss. Mehe. It was cool too.) He was in charge of the Summer Art Workshop program this year.
Checked attendance for the Summer Art Workshop.
Spent the rest of the day back at the office doing nothing.Â
April 16
Office duty (ergo I stayed in the office all day)
Photocopier have you met Sarah? Yep, I learned how to work the photocopier again. I knew how to use one in high school. I guess I just forgot since I didnât always use one.
Ms. Sallieâs (MCTCAO Secretary) secretary for the day. Labels and lots of labels. A perk was that I had a seat by her for most of the week, unlike the other ojts who had to use a monobloc chair. I guess it was rotation really, I would do this also if that seat next Ms. Sallie was unavailable. (Monobloc for the next 2 weeks until one person in the office got tired of it.)Â
