does anyone else find it a little weird how every main male character needs to have everyone fall in love with them?
or in general how every character needs to have some romantic plot tied into their story?

Still wondering why Nico nearly dies from using the bare minimum of his abilities but Percy can split the earth in half and only feel a little tickle in his tummy.
âŚ.
i need more fics about jason and nico have at least a friendship before the memory wipe.
forever thinking about jason and nico having more history than what was portrayed. of jason having more history with everyone. of reyna, hazel, frank, and even nico looking as jason and *seeing* jason but itâs *not*. the slight horror of that. the immense saddens of that.
heâll say something or do something and thsy all jsut freeze for a moment. they might laugh and smile or maybe tear up and turn away when they realize he doesnât remember a memory they shared.
itâs the same person. jason isnât dead like they thought. but oh how he isnât the same.
Is it controversial of me to say that I think Jason could've beat Percy if Hera and Rick didn't nerf him
LIKE OKAY HEAR ME OUT
Jason had been in the demigod world for 13 YEARS. 1 with Lupa, 12 with Camp Jupiter and the Roman Legions. He most likely has expertise in bare hand to hand combat, swords, knifes, spears and many other weapons.
Percy has know he's a demigod for 5 years I believe as of HOO. (This is my controversial take) The only reason people say Percy would win in a fight is because they're biased. And maybe I'm biased! But it wouldn't be entirely their faults.
Rick
I love him so so so much. BUT HOLY FUCK. He nerfed Jason so hard. It's like he knew Jason had the potential to be a stronger character.
-Grew up in an army.
-Son of Jupiter, KING OF THE GODS.
-A natural born leader, whether Jason likes it or not.
-Roman, a civilisation known for their strength and concouring of other nations.
But no. Rick took Jason and made him pass out 11 times (I heard this from somewhere else, may be the wrong number) over 4 books. You cannot convince me that's not him taking Jason out of the story because people didn't like him and he had the potential to be stronger.
If Jason had gotten back all his memories? Ooh boy everyone would be fucking scared that boy was trained within an inch of his LIFE.
My conclusion! Jason with his memories could beat Percy. Jason without them would put up a good fight, but Percy would win.
THIS IS MY OPINION please be kind I'm scared and wanted to rant ill go back in my cave
âŚâŚi agree lowkey
btw itâs BULLSHIT that percy got his memories but jason didnât

get him the FUCK off my screen.
Okay so I know the fandom kinda came to the agreement that Nico just Mulan chops his hair with his sword. But like- Imagine if he never cut it.
I remeber seeing a post of sm1 making a chart on how long Nicos hair would have actually been if he never cut it and it was so long đ
Guys he could have had such long hair why do we draw him with short hair
-Also there's actually no mention of him cutting his hair. In fact every time he leaves for a while and then pops back up sm1 always comments on how his hair got longer. So he could actually have crazy long hair and we're just glossing over the fact that he does
every time percy sees nico he says his hair is longerâŚ.
going off of last post: nicoâs idolization of percy is actually really intresting
nico met percy and was immediately introduced to him as this hero straight out of his hyper fixation, the thing that helped carry him through A LOT of scary and damaging stuff. percy is pretty much immediately set on a pedestal of untouchable, idealistic, perfect, golden, capital âhâ Hero. percy is the first and biggest introduction into this magical, fun, mythical world that nico has been obsessed with for AGES. and percy saves them from the big bad monster. percy is cool and heroic and strong. nico gets a crush. i think rick alluded to nico having a crush before percy, but think percy is nicoâs largest/most significant childhood crush. hes also the person that goes running off to adventures and save people, even when told not to. percy is entrusted and EXPECTED to protect his sister. bianca is the only family he has left, can remeber, and he relies pretty heavily on her. and heâs losing her to the hunters (no, not blaming bianca, being the sole caretaker of a young boy and yourself isnât good for a child in the best of cases).
and then percy fails. and then nico is alone. and then nico has creepy, death powers that are DANGEROUS and NOT good like heroâsâ powers usually are and nico is in a weird country in a weird time and he doesnât understand the world and heâs alone. and he runs. he hates percy for killing bianca, he hates percy for going back on his promise, he hates percy for making his idealized view of the mythical world break, he hates percy for being too handsome and charming. he hates percy because he cannot hate bianca. he hates percy because he cannot blame himself. he canât deal with blaming himself for his sisters death. so instead, he blames and hates percy for everything. but most of all, he hates percy because he canât *really* hate percy. despite it all, percy still makes his heart flutter and percy is still a hero to nico (and he knows that none of it is percyâs fault).
nico learns about this world through percy and still goes back to him as the base/perfect hero. it isnât good for either party. i think some of his actions can be attributed to his crush on percy and wanting to seem like a good person to him. (i donât think nico wanted percy to LIKE like him necessarily, but nico still had percy on a pedestal and wanted to feel like a good person despite all of his bad thoughts about himself. he wanted percy to think he was a good person).
but yeah, nicoâs crush on percy is intresting to explore properly but thereâs also like 15 other intresting things about nico and 20 other things taht contribute to his shit and complicated world view, morals, and mental health. his actions cannot be explained by 1 or 2 things (everything nico does lately gets boiled down to crush on boy [percy or will] or bianca) and fandom is so much more fun when you disregard the stupid stuff of cannon
I think making Nico having a crush on Percy was a really bad character choice as it waters all of Nicoâs complicated actions down to a childhood crush.
To preface, this isnât me saying Nico shouldnât be gay. I think his queerness fits wonderfully with his character, I just wish it was done in a different way.
In both HoH and BoOâthough mostly BoOâwhenever Nicoâs past and even current actions are mentioned, thereâs frequently some kind of implication that his motivation has something to do with his feelings for Percy. For example, in BoO, Nico mentions that he got Percy to bathe in the Styx because he believed it would make Percy love him. I dislike this because originally Nico wanted Percy in the Styx for two reasons. One was that he genuinely wanted to help in the war because he does have a good heart. The second was that he was desperate for information on his dead mother and past that he feels constantly looms over him. It was a situation where Nico wanted to help but also couldnât resist the urge to get some kind of information about his own life. I feel it really encapsulated the complexity of both his character and him and Percyâs dynamic. Then it was watered down to âI want Percy to love me!â
Another example is in HoO, where Frank says, âI guess we would do anything for the people we loveâ, to which Nico replies by looking at the ground bitterly and saying, âYeah, I guess we would.â This line was foreshadowing his crush on Percy, somewhat implying that he agreed to lead the seven to the House of Hades because Percy asked him to. Have we thought that maybe Nico did it because he knew it was right..? He knew that it would benefit the world..?
Also, ALL throughout Nicoâs perspectives in BoO, Percy is constantly mentioned. He is constantly centred in situations where he should be completely irrelevant. Iâm not saying I hate his characterisation in HoO. There are some parts I believe are absolutely gold, such as him killing Bryce Lawrence for threatening Reyna, gaslighting Percy in SoN because he knew it everything was about timing, the showcasing of his intelligence in both political and battlefield environmentsâŚ. but gosh some of it is awful.
Maybe Iâm looking into it too much, but it feels like Nicoâs crush implied that he bases a large portion of his reasoning and morality on Percy. It completely takes away from the previous complexity we have seen in his decision making process, which was dictated by a mixture of desperation, cold logic, and grief.
Anyway, I will continue to pretend the cupid scene never happened and Nico and Percy maintained the wonderful dynamic we saw in the first series.
no i totally get this. i think i under estimate how much the books themselves do this (especially the sun and the starâŚ) and just think itâs a fandom-based issue. but as i read that, i realized how true it was. i think nicoâs crush on percy DOES add complexity and good stuff to nicoâs character, but the fandom and the books themselves tend to make it overshine the rest of his motivations and features.
nicoâs crush on percy adds to his TORTUROUS experiences, life quality, and mental health in the first series, and adds complexity. heâs grieving his sister, trying to find his way in this new culture, trying to navigate this new time period, trying to survive as a demigod, dealing with being a son of hades (and the complicated religious thoughts, powers, and danger that comes with it), dealing with religious trauma, surviving as a homeless minor, AND now having to deal with him being gay and having a crush on the boy he blames for his sisters death. all while having little to no memory of his life before, of his own MOTHER, and mourning the life he once knew.
i think i remember reading the books and reading that NICO claimed to want perch to bathe in the river just because he liked percy and i was SHOCKED. i think i made myself forget it because i just didnât like it. nicoâs crush on percy is so much more than that and so much more than a child hood crush. it hurt both parties (nico idolizing percy wasnât good and made him hate percy for liking him AND âkillingâ bianca, prevented percy from getting close to nico and making percy dealing with the guilt of âfailingâ bianca) and seems to have done irreparable damage to their characters fandom wise.
its been so long since iâve read the books, and i think i already disregarded the stuff i didnât like, its shocking when i remember how inconsistent and flubbed the characters are
Sometimes I remember that Nico being italian is relevant in HoO.
There are a couple of scenes in HoH and BoO where Nico explains to the others something regarding the roman influence in their current lives and informations that he,as a greek demigod, shouldn't be able to know since it's about the romans. Like, for example, when they were talking about Diocletian's scepter and Jason and Hazel were giving their opinions on him,Nico also participated in the discussion. I love these little details because it makes us understand that Nico si very smart and knowledged, but I just realized that it's also because he is italian.
Italy has a very long and rich history behind, the ancient roman empire is just one of the biggest parts of it. During elementary and middle school we study a lot of it in history classes,so Nico probably had to go through lessons about it when he was still going to school (I'm pretty sure he continues to research and acculturate himself on his own now). So it's totally normal for him to know. And technically,he should also have a lot of informations on the emperors in ToA too,if we follow the same reasoning. If only Apollo brought Nico with him on his quests, maybe it would have been easier to figure them out.
I'm continuing the "Nico is a walking Wikipedia for demigods" agenda because I refuse to let him become clueless like Riordan is trying to do. (Nico not knowing many god/goddess? Let's be for real, that boy is studying to have so many informations,it's impossible that he doesn't know a deity when he was able to find a God of a dead pantheon on his own.)

is this anything
this is everything
the first time i read House of Hades I was maybe 13. foing through my own queer awakening. working on coming out.
Nicos plotline. being forced to come out by cupid. it hit me as a difficult experience but now, more than 10 years later, rereading, this is so so unfair.
why did nico have to go through this? why couldn't he have chosen when and how? im happy abt will solace of course. but nico went through hell, literally, multiple times, and here he is being tortured into coming out and admitting to himself, a friend that is terrified of him, and a god, who he is.
crying for this poor boy. THAT IS MY SON WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO HIM
lowkey real. i still remeber where i was when i read nicoâs chapter. i remember the hate some people gave it- and i totally get it. itâs rickâs first OPEN queer character that has already been through (literal) hell and back. but still, rick put him through more. but i really donât think nico being outed is bad. okay that came out wrong. the cupid scene was BAD. it was not right. and in the books, the characters treat it as bad as it is.
this reblog-reply was kind of a nothing burger, but i was just reminded of the first moment i SAW a queer character. what i was feeling. what it meant for me. how much it would mean to me.
the thing about writing powerful rivals, rick, is that you need to actually show us that they have equal amounts of power đ especially when the rival is the son of the king of olympus.
you can't make percy magically one up jason, randomly knock jason out in every fight so that he doesn't get to use his abilities, and shoehorn every character commenting on their "rivalry" and call it a day.
even little things like percy getting the gorgon's blood and jason not getting his memories up until very late in the books show preferential treatment
jason was considered percy's "competitor" yet it felt like he was only there to show us how ridiculously OP percy was. what was the point of making them roman and greek representatives of eachother if you don't let jason unleash his full potential intentionally because you're scared the fandom will like jason more?
this is why i try to even it out and make nico more powerful. in my head, i do the same to jason, i just donât talk about him enough.
rick has a case of âfavorite oc syndromeâ where he makes percy ultra powerful and does a bad job at showing characters who are supposed to be his level or higher. jason is a good example of that. it felt like we were told âthese two are equals and rivalsâ but it never felt like that. in general, i just donât think rick is good at power scaling. i donât think itâs entering his fault since he never expected pjo to be this big or to expand it with hoo, which you can also see in some other aspects
They were not, in fact, nearly there.
So I did a thing for @alnair-jpg 's Sept 2025 DTIYS
(I like to think Nico could have just shadow travel them, but he won't cause he's having too much fun watching his boyfriend trying to figure out a map)
LONG HAIR NICO YESSSSS THIS IS ADORBALE I OOVE GHE DOLORS AND THE SCEERY AND THE POSITIONING OF EVERUTGING
THE ART STYLE IS SO GRAPHIC NOVEL I LOVE IT
I like the idea that Nico is the only demigod (aside from his own children) Dionysus bothers calling by the right name.
âNico, your boyfriendâWallace, right?âwas looking for you.â
âNico and Wilhelm are the most tolerable of all of the couples at this gods forsaken camp.â
âNico, Peter, and Judas, you canât sit together for meals.â
idk if iâve posted this before, but nico and mr d have such a fun dynamic. itâs NOT father in son. itâs bitchy uncle and bitchy nephew. theyâre rude and weird and assholes and i love them. i need more of them

we've GOTTA collectively start writing Will as freakier i'm sorry. he willingly chose to not only date a Hades kid but to date the CREEPIER Hades kid. the one he watched killed multiple people. the one who has a habit of stalking people. the one everyone is fully convinced is cursed and/or evil. Will CHOSE THAT LIFE. Will is INTO THAT.
if you're not writing Will as daydreaming about a Morticia & Gomez Addams romance where they flirt in the camp morgue and Nico is actively trying to sacrifice him to dark spirits while in actuality Nico the magic the gathering nerd is mildly concerned why Will is so enthusiastic about showing off his bones and specimens collection to Nico (not that he's grossed out, it's just weird for somebody who's not him to be doing that) then you are missing out!!!!! make Will weirder!!!!
Nico di Angelo is a poker kingâ˘ď¸ and you can't convince me otherwise
