First Veilguard drawing yayy.... a commission with Lucanis and Rook for @libanezink :))
Hey! Seeing this @rrredgi commission again is reigniting my Veilguard love! This is so awesome!
SPOILERS FOR VEILGUARD —>
For those of you who have played and/or watched the scene that takes place after the dragon attack if you are a crow!rook who chose to save minrathous, you know this little line Viago throws at you?
“Because you always think of something. You always do. Except this time.”
Once again, I’m asking you guys to think about Lucanis having to tell Viago that rook is missing post-tearstone island. Because they don’t know where Rook is. They don’t even know if Rook is alive. All they know is they killed one of the gods, they did it, but the smoke cleared and solas is free but Rook is gone. and it’s WEEKS according to that Bellara romance scene.
Viago refuses to believe Rook is gone. Not Rook. Not the stubborn little idiot who had more lives than the feral street cats of treviso they so loved to pet. Not the little crow who spent years following Viago around with one hand always fisted in his cape until it was beat out of them to not show that kind of weakness. Not the little scrap of a being that succeeded for always being quick, but fell for their mouth that ran that much quicker. Not Rook, who he sent away to learn patience, to get them out of the hot seat and away from the other houses who wanted their head. Rook, who fought and won against gods and dragons and the blight. Not a crow who always completes their contract. Not Rook who was supposed to come home.
Not Rook. So Viago refuses to believe it. The first few days he clings so hard to the mantra. “Rook always thinks of something.” And they will come back and laugh and laugh and laugh at how worried Viago was and Viago will sigh and ring their neck and slip poison into their food to make sure they’ve been keeping up with their daily antivenoms— and Rook will be there.
But those days turn into a week, and then into two, and Viago hasn’t received any update from this so called ‘veilguard’ and all of the sudden “Rook always thinks of something.” is crumbling because what if this is the exception? this is the “except this time.” Because it is always until it’s not. and there is no time to truly mourn is there? there is still one god left to slay and very little time left to do it.
And Viago will fight. The loss of his… the loss to House de Riva is felt, but Viago is a professional. His wings are not clipped. ( his feathers are broken, hard shafts digging in and pulling blood from oozing cuts. they need clipped, groomed, removed. but his wings still work. they just hurt. ) He will finish this contract, in their name if nothing else.
But Viago let himself forget. “Rook always thinks of something.” And he let himself doubt and underestimate when he swore he would never be caught by those things again. but maybe this once, it’s okay. it’s okay because Rook stands in front of him, alive. Broken, but alive.
because a Crow always completes their contract, and a Rook will always come home to bother Viago.
Until they don’t
The moment the last of the Antaam fell, Rook dashed across the battlefield, hurrying to Harding's side. Lucanis shielded his eyes from the Rivaini sun to try and see what had prompted such a response, but all he saw was Harding laughing as Rook tugged her down to sit on the grass. Then Rook's gaze swept the area, and when it landed on him, she called his name with such urgency that he found himself moving just as quickly as she had.
"Keep her upright," Rook ordered as he knelt beside them, and he immediately placed a supportive hand on Harding's back.
"Rook, I'm fine. It's barely a scratch," Harding protested. "I'm not going to faint at the sight of a little blood."
Rook didn't answer; she was too busy dumping the arrows from her quiver. When they lay scattered, she reached into the quiver to her shoulder and fished out a circular leather case. When she unlatched it, it split open. One half held a set of miniature tools, and the other bristled with tiny vials in a rainbow of colors that sparkled in the afternoon light.

I’ve seen a lot of headcanons and fics where Viago disapproves of Rook getting together with Lucanis. And ones that focus on how an alliance with the De Rivas benefits House Dellamorte, which is definitely true, and i fucking love them, but consider Viago probably couldn’t possibly ask for a better partner for Rook.
Though to be fair I am obsessed with Viago and his belief that he could restore the royal power of Treviso and that “He will not be satisfied until he sits upon a throne.”
While as a talon, he’s definitely more powerful than the king, and he could probably easily overthrow his father and take the throne. But that's probably not his biggest issue, because as my old history teacher used to say, “Power cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred”, so by restoring the power of the royal family, he’d be taking power away from the merchant princes and the other talons. Which, it’s probably safe to assume they wouldn't be happy about”. (Also as a side note, the quote “It’s not paranoia if they’re out to get you” is applicable here. Viago is a man planning to make A Lot of enemies)
And remember, this man is still the 5th talon, and while he’s allied with Teia, she’s also only the 7th talon. (Though they definitely should have gotten a promotion after the events of 8 little talons). So he’s not really in any position to actually make any power play, not unless he wants to piss off 6 of the other houses.
Thankfully, depending on the choices you make, by the end of Veilguard, he’s almost certainly up there among the most powerful people in Antiva, given that he was a key player in ending the occupation of a major city by the Antaam, not to mention the killing of a Literal Evil God. The only Antivans that could be more influential than him at this moment is Teia, who he’s dating and let's be honest, will eventually marry, Rook, who’s his protege,
Among those people, Lucanis is probably the most politically powerful, given that he’s done everything Viago has, in addition to the fact that he actually killed a god, and is now The First Talon. While I feel that he would support Viago in the bid for the throne, he’s also the only one who Viago doesn’t have any sort of formal alliance with. And considering Viago’s general distrust towards basically everyone, he wouldn’t place that much trust in the bonds of friendship, (especially if you believe that he thinks that Lucanis’s attempt at flirting was a threat).
But given the general political upheaval Antiva is probably already in right now, because It’s highly doubtful that Governor Ivenci was the only guy to make deals with the Antaam or Venatori for power, there’s no better time for Viago to make a play for power. With everything so recent it would be so easy for him to step forwards as a figure for people to rally behind, I mean he exposed corruption in the government, he freed Treviso, he trained a god killer, and he’s the son of the king. But If he waits, he kinda does risk somebody else stepping forth.
But after Ivenci’s attempt at getting rid of the crows and the whole Illario debacle, the other Talons would be very suspicious of anyone trying to take power, and while Viago is a Crow, he’s also an infamous curmudgeon who doesn’t really get along with the others.
Luckily, Lucanis is head over heels for Rook, which cements an alliance with House Dellamorte. And well, there’s quite a historical precedent, especially in Antiva, for alliances and weddings to go hand in hand. Not to mention the message it would send to the other talons for Viago to give away Rook, his protege for whom he has already demonstrated a soft spot for, to The First Talon, arguably The Face of the Crows. In addition, a grand high profile Wedding between two heroes who just saved the world, is the perfect thing for the general public to associate Viago with after everything.
I mean I’m pretty sure he would still grumble about it and he’d definitely let Lucanis know that if he ever dared to hurt Rook, Lucanis would wish he was still trapped in the Ossuary. But once he’s certain that they’re serious about each other, Teia and him would be the first people to start bugging them about marriage.
Another scene living now in my head RE a Rook De Riva (again this works with romanced or not- but requires a larger age gap, think like 10-15 years) is Lucanis not really realising who they are until he sees them interact with Viago (and Teia) on the regular because he’s only heard everyone call them Rook so he thinks they’re just a De Riva crow
But then he sees this familiarity between the three of them, how comfortable they are joking with Teia and annoying Viago
And he when he realises it hits him like a barrel of experimental gaatlok
This is the kid
It’s the KID
THE KID
The child who he watched follow Viago around like a lost little lamb
The scrawny one he watched Viago dote upon when he thought no one was looking
The fledgling the master poisoner chose to personally train
The teenager he saw hanging around The Diamond with Teia when Viago was away on a long contract
The crow he’s sure he heard call Viago “Fratello” and Teia “Sorella” at least twice
And the first time after this realisation that Rook gets even the tiniest bit injured his heart and stomach drop right out through his ASS cos he’s the Demon of Vyrantium, and he’s not scared of anything EXCEPT an upset Viago, and an angry Teia
🐦⬛ birds of a feather 🪶
"And you want something from me."
I find it strange that people romancing Lucanis with Rook de Riva don’t choose the crow specific dialogue option before fighting Elgar’nan. You actually DO get his beautiful love confession that basically doubles as a proposal. The heart option just feels awkward as a Crow…like what do you mean if you never went to the crows!?Nope. We are making our houses immortal while falling even more in love.
And speaking of romancing Lucanis with a de Riva…just their existence is a miracle for him. It must completely rewrite his brain circuitry. He almost religiously follows Caterina teachings for his whole career. Rebels in a few small ways within the confines of his mission but does not deviate further than freeing the wigmakers slaves. He still can’t and won’t say no to Caterina and hopes to dodge the bullet by keeping busy with contracts.
Meanwhile Rook de Riva completely goes off the rails with the whole antaam slavers situation. On their own accord, no contract. All rebellious and free. Crow Rook is the avenger and the weapon that fights for what is right. Free to choose, free to kill and strike when it’s necessary. It must have been completely intoxicating for Lucanis “everything was chosen for me” Dellamorte. It’s why I fully believe that they are the best pick for him out of all the origins. They are everything he could have hoped for and more.

ROOKFEST will run from NOVEMBER 17TH TO 23RD
i think a lot of us who have rook de rivas (rooks de riva?) have considered that viago kept rook away from the dellamorte boys, either to keep them safe from the dellamortes’ enemies, to prevent caterina from poaching them, or just to avoid any potential drama
but i’m starting to think it might be funnier if viago actually encouraged rook to get to know them. people seem to like rook (for some reason), and creating more ties to the first talon’s house can only secure viago’s own position in the crow hierarchy (at least for as long as caterina lives)
but of course, because viago suggested it, rook is immediately uninterested and stays away from them because who would want to hang out with a pair of rich legacy hires?
and then rook finally meets lucanis years later and has an absolute crisis
sees him in the ossuary: “oh no. he’s hot”
sees him buy gifts for the team: “oh no. he’s kind”
sees him cook: “oh no. he’s competent”
and rook is just so torn about pursuing him
because the only thing worse than a disappointed viago…
is a smug viago
(there’s a reason rook and spite get along so well)
Crows be like: "Remember, no healthy coping mechanisms"

Viago de Riva; forgotten son with a found family of assassins (a brief but angsty dive)
Born one royal bastard of many to King Fulgeno II of Antiva, Viago was born without a lot of choices, but one very large one;
Exile or the Antivan Crows.
VIago was the only one of all Fulgeno's bastards that chose the Crows, a choice that put him on a path of shadows and blood. Turning his back on the only home he has ever known for the ruthless world of the Crows, Viago had to forge his own house and find his own family, turning his back on a royal lineage that never wanted or acknowledged him.
Viago has walked in both worlds, where betrayal can come from any direction and alliances are often temporary - in either world, his survival has hinged time and time again on his vigilance and natural mistrust of others. More than once, the only thing that has kept him alive was the way he builds tolerance to poisons and insists on testing everything he eats. I have to wonder if Viago has ever truly rested, he's always alert, always keeping one step ahead of all the threats on every side - always in danger, both as a bastard who could be seen as a threat to the legitimate line and as a Crow Talon surrounded by ambitious assassins.
And then there's his relationship with Teia 💜
I love the humanity of Viago's struggle to love and be loved. As a royal bastard, he would have been inherently unwanted and constantly reminded of his illegitimacy - daily reminders to ingrain a perpetual sense of unworthiness and isolation into him. I love the honesty of how he struggles to open up and be vulnerable, even with someone like Teia from within the world of the Crows.
The two of them live in a dangerous world, where personal relationships can become weapons in the wrong hands. Viago has every reason to shy away from Teia (and sometimes does), yet that inherent need for perception and connection drags him out of safety and back into her arms, time and time again.
All of that to say loooooooooooook at this fourth draft of a letter Teia is helping Viago write to send to his dad about the situation in Treviso with the Butcher.
King's Draft: Action on Behalf of Antiva
As Seventh Talon, I give notice that the Antivan Crows have drawn a contract against the enemies of Treviso, the Antaam. (Teia)
Teia, the Seventh Talon, is writing to inform of the situation, rather than Viago (Fifth Talon). We don't know if she's stepping up to protect Viago from his asshole father or if Viago doesn't speak to the king often on principle (he does in prior Dragon Age content), or if this is simply how it is done - maybe there's an existing agreement among the Crows to avoid political complications by keeping the king and his son seperate. Any way the cookie crumbled, I like these crumbs.
It is not the Antaam. (Viago)
We aren't required to give His Majesty a point-by-point, but he's your blood, Viago. It is a courtesy to let him know we are going to war. (Teia)
"He's your blood, Viago." I don't know if this is a reminder of his unique ability to bridge two vastly different worlds or if it is just a reminder of political significance, but either way it struck me as significant. Despite his royal blood being a source of personal pain, it provides Viago leverage in ways that other Crow Talons could never wield, not even Caterina.
The occupying Antaam are strong, driven, fanatical. They cannot be reasoned with because reason is just a weapon to be resisted. They can be killed, of course, but removing a leader does not remove their desire to be led. They are a force we must contend with, but they are NOT Treviso's true enemy. (Viago)
A name, Viago. Contracts require a stabber and a stabbee. (Teia)
Teia (child street thief turned Crow) is the pragmatic and operational, focusing on fulfilling the requirements as a formality, while our baby boi Viago the Strategic is firmly honed in on reality and understanding the details. Teia wants to take the next step to move forward, Viago wants to understand the problem before making the next move. They are so different and I love the way their differences lend their relationship strength, rather than pulling it apart.
Teia, you know my doubts. The Butcher took the city too easily, and there is dealing with the gods there that I dread to know. But I fear that the true enemy of Treviso is not known because they ARE known, merely unrevealed. (Viago)
"The Hand That Leashed Treviso." Is that nebulous enough? (Teia)
I like this. Sarcastic, yet she's showing that she's listening to Viago's concerns and hearing them.
Yes, that is a series of someones we can eventually kill. But not something we can send my father. (Viago)
And he acknowledges being heard, but points out the impracticality of presenting such a target to his father. Again, I think it's fucking significant that he refers to Fulgeno as his father and not as the king. Whether he's tying himself verbally to his unique position, subconsciously reacting to his abandonment by the royal family or just responsing to Teia's "he's your blood" earlier, it feels powerful. Like the kick in the gonads I'd like to five Fulgemo.
On to draft five, then. Neri, begin again. (Teia)
It says a lot to me that they're having this entire conversation in front of their scribe. Doubtless someone sworn to secrecy already, it just strikes me as wholesome that they're comfortable having these disagreements in front of Neri. They may not agree yet, but they're committed to it. And their disagreement has no weight on their opinions of each other.
Viago de Riva, Fifth Talon Andarateia Cantori, Seventh Talo Transcribed: Neri de Acutis
Meet Roslyn De Riva
She was raised Dalish until her clan had to exile her. The Crows picked her up and she's been with them every since. She's a lightning wielding, fiery redhead and my spunky alter ego.
