This is me when I read:

Rhys to Elain - "Some were as lovely as you, Elain."(pg.467)

Amren to Elain - "She was jealous of your beauty."(pg.468)

He can't sleep because he's thinking about her. He stares at her little gift every night. If he stays still for too long, his mind immediately goes back to her and he spends hours thinking about her without being able to touch her. He believes she belongs to someone else, while also knowing that she doesn't want to belong to someone else. He thinks his hands are too stained to touch someone as lovely and gentle as her, but he still can't keep himself away, even if all he gets are a few fleeting touches and brushed fingers.

And then, the moment those feelings are finally returned, his High Lord, his brother, his king, tells him he can't have her because being with her could start a war. But let's be real, Azriel would burn the world down for Elain if he had to.

He looks at her, watches her, yearns for her, protects her loves her, but he can't have her. Not yet.

And that's exactly why ACOTAR 6/7/8 has so much potential. A couple choosing each other over fate, over a mating bond, over the orders of a High Lord, over what everyone else expects of them.

As he should be.

Azriel:

azriel demonstrates no mate-like behaviour toward gwyn. there is no evidence to suggest gwyn likes azriel as a mate would.

there's a lot of baseless claims about "mate-language" in this fandom which have been debunked by people far cleverer than i am and even if they weren't

mate-like behaviour takes precedence over "mate language" every single time.

i would argue that azriel has shown more protective instincts over feyre than he does gwyn.

but there's only one person azriel reacts like a mate to, and it's elain.

But Elain did not balk from him, did not shy away as she nodded—just once. Azriel, graceful as any courtier, offered her an arm.

“Why not make them mates?” I mused. “Why Lucien?”
