Also we don't talk enough about Elain's growth as a character. When Graysen rejects her she comes to view the engagement ring as a promise of what could have been and sort of holding on despite him clearly saying he didn't want her anymore.
Contrast that with her immediately returning the necklace to Azriel when he backs up and seems hesitant about being with her (We, the readers know the real reason but she does not).
We see her go from someone who clings to a broken promise out of hope to someone who refuses to put herself in a situation where she is waiting for someone to choose her. And all this without her pov.
