In the history of Latin American art, women were used as muses by artists seeking, generally, white women with Western parameters of beauty. In art, through their different expressions, indigenous muses were rarely or hardly ever shown. The indigenous woman was delegated to the figure of serfdom, mainly. The Bolivian woman in a skirt, also called “cholita”, was discriminated against for many centuries by her very society, which preferred the white muses as a reference of beauty. This series of photographs aims to reclaim and give place to these women in skirts, muses that inspire to break preestablished schemes. They are strong women who fight to enforce their rights every day and in the different areas of Bolivian society.
