When I was a teenager I had a phase where I called soccer football because the rest of the world called it that but eventually my dad told me βYou know, thereβs a point where acting smart doesnβt make you smart and just makes you annoying. Refusing to use the word that everyone else around you uses doesnβt make you smarter than them.β
So anyways I call it soccer now.
Anyways as a teenager I think I was trying to find small ways to make myself feel like I was smarter than other people but tbh my dad was right, even though I didnβt wanna admit it at the time.
At a certain point performatively doing stuff to make you sound more cultured and educated than other people just kinda makes you annoying and also shows off that youβre not willing to adjust to the most common practices where you are. Youβre just creating friction for the sake of it and not really accomplishing anything.
I feel like the actual message here is going over a lot of yβallβs heads
βLet people talk however they wantβ
Yeah okay. You can talk however you want. You can choose to make communication more difficult with those around you on purpose just to make yourself feel smarter. Itβs a free country.
βThatβs a mean thing to say to a childβ
I was fifteen and needed someone to sit my ass down and tell me how I was coming across to other people. Sometimes parenting does in fact involve telling your kid when theyβre being a bit of an ass.
βOnly Americans call it soccerβ
Untrue but even if it was true I live in the US and calling it football only causes confusion in my everyday life. Your worldview is Eurocentric and your point is irrelevant to my life and this post isnβt about soccer anyways
