A small First Nations community in Ontario that was burned to the ground by a raging wildfire on Monday is being deprived of the help it needs because the federal government doesn't recognize it as a First Nation, the community's lawyer says. And its chief says she didn't hear anything from Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty for nearly a week after the fire broke out. Residents of Collins First Nation, a remote community without road access more than 200 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, were forced to self-evacuate earlier this week in advance of fast-moving fires.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.

Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.

All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.

After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.

It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.

And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.

The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.

A persistent error runs through most public discussion of oil policy, especially in political circles. Oil is treated as if it were a single interchangeable commodity. In reality, crude oil exists, coarsely, on a two-axis spectrum defined by density and sulfur content, and refineries are built around narrow slices of that spectrum. Light, sweet crudes flow easily, contain little sulfur, and yield high proportions of gasoline, naphtha, and petrochemical feedstocks. Heavy, sour crudes are dense, sulfur rich, and yield larger fractions of diesel, residual fuels, and asphalt. These differences are not academic.

They determine where crude can go, what it can be turned into, and whether it is economic at all. Much of US policy still operates on a 1970s mental model of oil scarcity, when volume mattered more than quality and demand growth was assumed.

Venezuela is often described as having the world’s largest proven oil reserves at around 300 billion barrels, which would represent roughly 17% of the global total and easily exceed the reserves of the United States and Russia, but the simple fact of large reserves masks critical nuances about extraction and market value. Most of this oil is extra-heavy crude concentrated in the Orinoco Belt, buried deep underground and much more viscous and sulfur-rich than the light crude that dominates global trade, so producing it requires blending with lighter hydrocarbons, significant diluent imports, and more complex processing. All of this makes extraction costlier and slower compared with conventional light oil.
