She was already a regular helper at Pinako’s shop when she was 11. At 15, she walked into a town full of top automail experts and impressed all but one of them with a rush-order arm she’d made. Then, she took over one person’s shop so thoroughly, her customers won’t even let someone else make the outer casings. On top of that, she read medical books as a child and not only understood them, but retained enough of it to successfully deliver a baby years later even though that had nothing to do with her preferred field. And she didn’t have any help from the Truth.

Scar was a victim of said genocide and winds up defending Liore but he killed dozens of people in his hunt for state alchemists, and the narrative is cleverly set up in the beginning to show us graphically the results of Scar’s violence but holds back on showing us the devastation of Roy’s participation in violence until the spreading stain conspiracy comes to a head and we learn the truth about Ishbal. Are the homuculi fundamentally evil? Is there such thing as a fundamentally evil person, or is it only actions that are evil? How can the homunculi be any more monstrous than the people who made them and control them? Then by that logic are the state alchemists who participated in the war - “just following orders” - also excused of their actions? Is Scar? In a complex world where you understand the completeness of complicated situations, how do you hold people accountable for their actions?
