#DiverseVoices coincides with #CelebrateJackie. jacquelinewoodson just won the nationalbook award for Young People’s Literature for Brown Girl Dreaming from penguinteen. We all love this books and are glad so many are responding to it and the lyrical aspects to Jackie’s writing.
Science finds fiction lovers have a special advantage in the emotional centers of the brain
It’s not news that reading has countless benefits: Poetry stimulates parts of the brain linked to memory and sparks self-reflection; kids who read the Harry Potter books tend to be better people. But what about people who only read newspapers? Or people who scan Twitter all day? Are those readers’ brains different from literary junkies who peruse the pages of 19th century fictional classics?
Short answer: Yes — reading enhances connectivity in the brain. But readers of fiction? They’re a special breed.
Why is it the standard for SciFi novels to have ugly, unappealing covers?
I don’t know, but a fair amount of them are aggressively ugly.
A moment of silence for all the good books with bad covers.

Latino/a Rising is the first collection of U.S. Latino/a science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres.
There is like two days left on this Kickstarter for an anthology of all Latinx authors. And they’re less than $2,000 away from their goal.
And it’s not just featuring literature, but art by Latinx folks as well.
From the kickstarter: "This professionally produced anthology will not only be stimulating and entertaining, it will also give a portrait of the great multiplicity of the U.S. Latino/a experience. Latino/a Rising will be as diverse as U.S. Latinos/as are, and authors and artists from many different regions of the U.S. and from many different national origins will be included.”
Don’t you want to be a part in making this happen? It sounds amazing… and look at that list of authors…
"Here are just some of the wonderful authors and artists who will be included in the anthology: Kathleen Alcalá, Giannina Braschi, Pablo Brescia, Ana Castillo, Daína Chaviano, Junot Díaz, Carlos Hernandez, Ernest Hogan, Adál Maldonado, Carmen Maria Machado, Alejandro Morales, Daniel José Older, Edmundo Paz-Soldán, Alex Rivera, Sabrina Vourvoulias."
They’ve got only 46 hours left, but they are so close to 100%!! Come help them!!!
"SCHOOL LIBRARIAN? THEY STILL HAVE THOSE?"
The problem is that people don’t think they’re needed, when, in fact, kids’ literacy and engagement levels would go way up if there was a qualified librarian or libtech in every school. Unfortunately, this is not so. Maybe one day….
After watching a presentation from the Chinese gov't on required hours/days and the library was never mentioned I asked the director if I had any kind of job security. Thankfully, I have a supportive director who said that I was quite essential to the functioning of the school.
I also think this is a good time to add that I find it incredibly rude that other types of librarians scoff at school librarians. Girl, I got my MLIS
Parent to child at the library: Shhh...remember what we said about being loud in the library?
Child: We'll wake up the books.
Parent: That's right.
im not even reblogging this sarcastically

I queued this on my library’s Facebook page as my birthday gift to me. I’m so happy.
ok I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this but I keep thinking about the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and how the best character in the whole story is only briefly mentioned. We’re given such limited amount of information about the guy that sells Jack the beans....
I always thought it was about making the most of what you got. Hey, I got these beans that my mom thought was dumb. I'LL SHOW HER. WHOA RICHES. It's not like the giant ate him. He got away with it.
Also, if you read Fables you would know that Jack was just the prime example of white male privilege and just an all around dick who happens to get lucky ALL the time.
*puts on detective hat* Hmmm…something about this just doesn’t add up…
Seems legit, even says on the bottom it is from the teacher
It has two exclamation marks. Must be legit.
