Transiting Mercury enters Cancer (pre-Retrograde Zone)
Monday, June 1 - Friday, June 12, 2026
First things first: because of the upcoming retrograde zone, Mercury remains in Cancer until August 9/10 - about ten weeks total. (From my northern-hemispheric, US perspective, that’s basically summer school.) I want to spend a little more time writing about Mercury/Cancer, therefore, than I ordinarily would do. (And departing from the usual format.)
So what’s the assignment? I took some notes from astrologer Steven Forrest’s books of Earth (for Mercury) and Water (for Cancer), and typed up a list. Maybe one of these items resonates with you?
“(Our) way of thinking and strategizing about how we take care of (ourselves) and other people…needs some attention”
“Exposing our intelligence to the reality of human needs and woundedness”
“Learning to look at the world through the eyes of the Great Mother, with compassion and forgiveness”
“Seeing the wounded child in everyone”
And then there’s my own thought, based on Mercury covering the same ground in the Zodiac, as Jupiter is about to complete:
Jupiter has given us an idea of the Bigger Picture; now Mercury is preparing to help us work out the details
(What is really really really interesting to me is that later this year - beginning September 10 - the Lady Asteroid Ceres will enter her Retrograde Zone, which will take place in almost exactly the same swath of Zodiac, between 10°-23° Cancer. Broadly speaking, we have the overall vision through Jupiter; Mercury will help us formulate some plans; and Ceres will help us implement them in our day-to-day lives.)
Cancer isn’t the easiest sign for Mercury to transit - it’s most at home in the Air signs, where it can theorize all day long. Emotions and “gut” feelings (Cancer rules the stomach) are way out of its comfort zone. Making matters worse this time is that, during this beginning stint in Cancer, Mercury’s aspects are mostly squares (to all those current Aries transits) and inconjuncts (to the Aquarius transits). That’s a lot of insecurity. Here follow the dates and times for each one. (Mercury is still zipping along, though not as quickly as usual; the aspects are valid for maybe up to 18 hours coming and 12 hours going.)
Tuesday, June 2, 15:20 UTC - Mercury/Cancer semi-sextile Ceres/Cancer, 1°54’
Wednesday, June 3, 22:49 UTC - Mercury/Cancer trine North Node/Pisces, sextile South Node/Virgo, 4°01’
Thursday, June 4:
00:18 UTC, Mercury/Cancer square Neptune/Aries, 4°07’
18:51 UTC, Mercury/Cancer inconjunct Pluto Rx/Aquarius, 5°19’
Monday, June 8:
05:02 UTC, Mercury/Cancer square Vesta/Aries, 10°18’
16:59 UTC, Mercury/Cancer inconjunct Juno Rx/Aquarius, 10°59’
Wednesday, June 10:
05:27 UTC, Mercury/Cancer square Pallas/Aries, 12°58’ (this one is the first of three)
07:29 UTC, Mercury/Cancer square Saturn/Aries, 12°58’
Notice that Mercury hits all the Lady Asteroids. A big piece of this is how we fit into our own communities, or even if we fit into them. Do we really understand our neighbors? Our families? Saturn says there are some blocks there - we may have some sentimental, rose-colored views of our communities that are very far from the truth. Or maybe we have our brains closed off to anyone or anything that interferes with that rose-colored point of view.
It’s important to face facts and not withdraw into our mental Crab shells. For the duration of the entire Mercury/Cancer transit, we have our work cut out for us, with very few “easy” aspects. Keep in mind, though, that:
“Learning to look at the world through the eyes of the Great Mother, with compassion and forgiveness”
…applies to how we talk to ourselves, too.
