during previous movie nights, yuma would fight to keep his eyes open, trying his best to stay focused on the screen, but it never really worked out. he'd always end up falling asleep halfway through. you didn't mind, though. he was tired, and he deserved to rest.

you glanced up at the clock. 7 p.m. nearly the time yuma usually got home. the first batch of cookies was already done, each one perfectly circular, while the second batch baked in the oven.

you continued humming along to the music, losing yourself in the rhythm so completely that you didn't hear the door unlock or the jangle of keys in the doorway.

yuma peeked inside and called your name, his bag still slung over his shoulder as the sweet scent of freshly baked dough engulfed him. he kicked off his shoes and padded straight for you, dropping his bag somewhere along the way.

for a moment, he just stood behind you, watching the way your body moved, taking in your facial expressions as you murmured along to the lyrics. a smile tugged at his lips when he realized you were completely lost in your own world.

then he let out a breath, and you jumped, whirling around with your hand gripping your chest.

"yuma!" you gasped, hand now clutching the edge of the counter to steady yourself. you reached over to lower the music. "stop scaring me like that! when did you even get here?"

"i called your name, like, twice," he chuckled, moving closer until he had you caged between his arms, hands resting on the counter on either side of you.

"well, you could've been louder." you playfully rolled your eyes and turned back to continue what you were doing.

he raised an eyebrow, his hands settling on your hips before you could fully turn away. he leaned in dangerously close to your face, eyes studying yours before flicking down to your lips. that familiar smirk spread across his face before he pressed a kiss to your lips. then another. then one more to your cheek.

you sighed, gently pushing him away with your hands on his chest. "you need to shower. fast. so we can actually have our movie night." you pointed a finger at his face, eyes narrowing playfully.

yuma could only nod as guilt washed over him. he knew he'd been cutting your movie nights short a lot lately, so he had to make it up to you.

"i'm sorry," he mumbled, bending his head down to rest on your shoulder. you could hear the guilt clear in his tone, so you massaged the back of his neck, making him face you.

"if you want to make it up to me, let's watch my favorite movie, and i'll wait for you to make your special popcorn." you smiled at him, sweeping his bangs aside.

your smile widened when you saw his eyes crinkle as he huffed another laugh and agreed. he left a soft kiss on your lips, then gathered his things to quickly shower.

when yuma came back out, you were still at the counter, finishing up the last batch of cookies that had just been pulled from the oven. hearing his footsteps, you looked up, your hair now falling freely over your shoulders.

he padded over to you, taking his usual spot with his chin on your shoulder. the scent of baby powder and soap enveloped you, his bangs tickling your ear every time he shifted.

"why don't you get started on the popcorn while i set up the snacks?" you suggested.

yuma nodded and moved to the nearest pot to begin making the popcorn from scratch. he always had a way of making it so that every kernel was popped, crunchy, and perfectly salted.

by the time yuma was done, you were already lying on the couch, wrapped in the coziest blanket you owned, fingers moving across the remote as you typed in the title of the film.

he set down the tray with the popcorn and your favorite drinks, then cracked open an energy drink for himself. no way was he going to fall asleep in the middle of anything, especially not when you'd tried so hard for him today.

yuma settled down next to you, and you leaned your head against his chest. the movie began, and you both stayed quiet except for the occasional word or two about how your days had gone.

the longer the movie went on, the more relaxed you both became. at some point, you shifted so that you were snuggled up with your legs bent, and yuma laid his head in your lap, your hand absentmindedly carding through his long hair.

"i missed you today," he whispered, bringing your hand up to his face and leaving a kiss on the back of it.

"so you didn't miss me any other day?" you hummed, poking fun at him to get back at him for how he usually was with you.

he looked up and gave you an unamused stare as you wiggled your eyebrows at him.

"oi, oi," he complained, sitting up straight. "do you even want to know how many times i complained that i was dying to get to home to you?"

he started listing every moment he'd missed and thought of you that day, making you want to take back your words as you laughed at him passionately counting on his fingers.

"even nicholas told me to shut up and leave!" his chest heaved dramatically, like he'd just run a marathon. you couldn't help the giggle that escaped you as you hid your face under the blanket.

yuma huffed, crossing his arms in a fake pout as he turned away from you.

you peeked out, tugging at the sleeve of his shirt to pull him back. he caved immediately, never able to stand being away from you for too long. his arms wrapped around your waist and he rested his chin on your chest, gazing up at you with those bright, cat-like eyes that made you want to squish him.

you cupped his cheeks and peppered his face with kisses. he hummed, drinking in every second of the attention you were giving him.

nestling his face into your palms, he pressed a kiss to one hand, then took your other and kissed that too. he trailed up your wrist and arm, leaving tender kisses along the way until he reached your face again.

the movie was long forgotten by then. when your lips met, it wasn't hungry or urgent like it usually was with yuma; it was soft and gentle, like a cloud cradling you. like he was saying sorry all over again.

when you pulled back, you could see the red creeping across his ears, the warmth spreading over his neck that you felt as your arms looped around him. you both shifted, your head settling into his lap while his fingers wandered through your hair.

yuma pretended to watch the movie, but his eyes never left your face. he noticed the way you fought off sleep, struggling to stay awake for him.

by the time the credits rolled, you were sound asleep, soft breaths falling from your lips. he smiled to himself, already knowing he'd never let you hear the end of it in the morning.

now you’re here — curled up on the couch in his dorm on a rare day off, his head resting in your lap while a soft lo-fi playlist hums in the background. outside, rain patters gently against the window. inside, everything feels warm and safe.

euijoo looks up at you with those big, sparkling eyes, his dark hair falling messily across his forehead. “are you comfortable?” he asks for the third time. “i can move if my head is too heavy.”

you laugh softly and thread your fingers through his hair, scratching his scalp lightly. “you’re perfect right here, joo. stop worrying.”

he smiles shyly, cheeks turning the faintest shade of pink. even after months together, compliments still make him blush like it’s the first time. he turns his face into your stomach, hiding, and wraps his arms around your waist in a gentle hug.

“i like this,” he mumbles against your sweater. “just… being with you. no schedules. no cameras. just us.”

your heart feels too big for your chest. you lean down and press a kiss to the top of his head. he smells like his coconut shampoo and the faint scent of the vanilla candle he lit earlier.

“me too,” you whisper. “i’ve been looking forward to today all week.”

he lifts his head again, resting his chin on your tummy so he can look at you properly. his gaze is so soft it makes you melt. “really?”

“really. i missed my favorite person.”

euijoo’s smile grows wider, bright and genuine. he reaches up to cup your cheek, thumb brushing lightly across your skin like you’re something delicate and precious. then he slowly pulls you down for a kiss — sweet, lingering, and full of quiet affection. his lips are soft and taste faintly like the strawberries you shared earlier.

when he pulls away, he doesn’t go far. just rests his forehead against yours, eyes closed, breathing you in.

“i’m really lucky,” he says quietly. “sometimes i still can’t believe you chose me.”

you frown and poke his cheek. “hey. none of that. i chose you because you’re kind, and thoughtful, and you make me feel safe. and because you always save the last strawberry for me.”

he laughs — that bright, melodic sound you love so much. “i’ll save every strawberry for you from now on.”

you both shift until you’re lying face to face on the couch, legs tangled together under a fluffy blanket. euijoo plays with your fingers, tracing patterns across your palm as he tells you about his week — the funny moments in dance practice, how harua tried to prank him again, how much he missed you between schedules.

you listen, nodding along, occasionally reaching up to brush his hair out of his eyes. every few minutes he leans in to steal another soft kiss, like he can’t help himself.

after a while, his stomach growls.

you raise an eyebrow. “hungry?”

he nods, looking a little embarrassed. “we skipped lunch because we were napping…”

“come on,” you say, tugging him up. “let’s make something.”

in the kitchen, euijoo is in his element. he’s surprisingly good at cooking — patient and precise. you stand behind him with your arms wrapped around his waist, chin on his shoulder, watching as he chops vegetables for fried rice. every now and then he lifts a piece to your lips for you to taste.

“too salty?” he asks, glancing back at you.

“perfect,” you murmur, pressing a kiss to his shoulder blade.

he turns around in your arms, spoon still in hand, and smiles down at you. “you’re distracting me.”

“good,” you tease, standing on your tiptoes to kiss him. he melts instantly, free hand coming up to cradle the back of your head as he kisses you back sweetly.

the rice almost burns because you get too caught up in each other, but euijoo saves it with a dramatic gasp and quick stir. you both laugh as you plate the food and carry it back to the couch, eating while watching an anime he’s been wanting to show you.

halfway through the episode, your bowl is empty and you’re back in his arms. euijoo pulls the blanket higher around your shoulders and tucks you closer against his chest. his heartbeat is steady under your ear.

“i love days like this,” he whispers, lips brushing your temple. “i wish i could have more of them with you. i know my schedule is crazy and—”

you tilt your head up and silence him with a gentle kiss. “we take what we can get, joo. and these quiet moments? they’re more than enough.”

he looks at you with so much love in his eyes it almost overwhelms you. “i’m going to marry you one day,” he says suddenly, voice barely above a whisper, like it’s a secret he’s been keeping. “if you’ll have me.”

your breath catches. even though it’s not a formal proposal, the sincerity in his voice makes your eyes sting.

“of course i will,” you answer, cupping his face. “i’d be the luckiest person in the world.”

euijoo’s smile is radiant. he kisses you again — slower this time, deeper, full of promises and future plans and all the gentle love he carries for you.

when you pull apart, he rests his cheek on top of your head and sighs happily.

“thank you for choosing me,” he murmurs. “every day i’m going to try to be someone worthy of you.”

you snuggle deeper into his chest, listening to the rain and his heartbeat.

“you already are, euijoo. you always have been.”

the anime continues playing in the background, but neither of you is really watching anymore. you’re too busy exchanging soft kisses, quiet giggles, and whispered “i love you”s under the warm glow of the living room lights.

outside, the rain keeps falling.

inside, wrapped in each other’s arms, the world feels perfectly complete.

euijoo presses one last kiss to your forehead as your eyes grow heavy.

“sleep, baby,” he whispers. “i’ll be right here when you wake up. always.”

and you believe him.

“okay, sweetheart, close your eyes.” euijoo murmured against your cheek before pulling back, a small giggle escaping from your lips as your eyelids fluttered shut. you could hear him move next to you, the blanket beneath you rustling with the motion.

the gentle breeze brushed itself through your hair, the cool evening air sending a shiver up your spine. as you sat there with your eyes shut tight, euijoo’s soft hand finding your face, your mind is sent back to the beginning. back to when everything began.

all those years ago, you had met euijoo in high school - painfully awkward interactions, terrible haircuts, even worse outfits. he had approached you during the school’s annual prom, both of you stood awkwardly to the side, no date to dance with.

“hey, uh, i’m euijoo. you probably already know that,” he said, his hands adjusting the blazer he wore. “you… you here alone too?”

you nodded, fixing your hair as you glanced at him.

“i know you. and yeah, i’m here alone too.”

your eyes didn’t miss the brief frown that flickered across his face. it was quickly replaced with a sheepish grin, his hand extended to you.

“well, um… wanna dance with me?” euijoo asked, sounding hopeful. you took his hand gratefully.

“of course i would.”

what blossomed from that fateful prom night was a beautiful relationship. both of you were unfamiliar with what love looked like, but it somehow felt natural when you were together, like finding a missing puzzle piece after searching for so long. you’d shared nervous touches, ‘accidental’ brushes of hands, pinkies linking as you walked to class together. sometimes, if euijoo felt brave, he’d cup your face in his hands, pressing a kiss to your forehead when he walked you home.

“see you tomorrow.” he’d whisper into your skin, cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink that you found utterly adorable.

you always loved how warm his hands felt on your cheeks.

“are you listening?” euijoo’s voice pulled you back into the present moment. you cleared your throat, nodding, your eyes still shut.

“yeah, i’m listening.”

“okay, good.”

a beat of silence passed, the sounds of the ocean calmly crashing against the shore being the only noise you could hear for a moment. then he continued.

“ever since the day i first spoke to you, at that stupid school dance… i’ve been sure of my feelings for you.” euijoo’s voice wavered ever so slightly. “and i’ve tried my best to show you every single day how undeniably in love i am.”

that familiar buzz of emotion hit you, tears already building up on your waterline.

“open your eyes, sweetheart.”

slowly, your eyes opened, adjusting to the light before focusing on what was in front of you - euijoo, on one knee, his big brown eyes full of love as he looked at you.

“oh, euijoo…” you whispered, the hot tears falling before you could say anything more.

“this has been on my mind for a while, i’m pretty nervous.” euijoo chuckled quietly, clearing his throat before fishing for something in his pocket. “my love for you can’t be expressed with the words of any language. you make me the happiest man on earth, and i’m so proud to be yours.”

pulling out a small box, he flips it open, revealing a beautiful ring, a diamond center stone, with encrusted gems along the band. you’d only ever dreamt of a ring as perfect as this.

“my love, will you marry me?”

time felt like it stopped when those words fell from his lips - the words you’d been waiting for since the day you met. 

“yes, baby. yes.”

sliding the ring over your finger, euijoo let out a heavy sigh of relief, his eyes watery as he admired you. he pulled you into his chest, his arms wrapping around you. quiet sobs escaped both of you and euijoo, your face buried in his shoulder. everything about the moment felt unreal.

“i love you so much, euijoo.”

“i love you so much more.”
