Agnes Grey was very interesting to me because it gave me flashbacks to my Au Pair experience where the mom also wanted me not to discipline the children but also expected perfect behaviour from them. We know from modern parenting science that corporal punishment is counterproductive, but you do have to replace it with something, or else the kids will just run wild, as they do in the first family Agnes works for.
