i can't even be that upset about the super depressing endings of every edith wharton book i've read so far because they're always so beautifully written and the tragedy of it makes so much sense. sometimes sad endings are just better x

even though i feel like this is her whole thing, i somehow still don't think edith wharton gets enough credit for how good she is at writing this sense of completely preventable unhappiness and devastation which becomes inevitable because of the repressive and rigid gilded cage of a society she lived in and thus wrote about... if that makes sense. it is just great! though it does make it kind of impossible for me to move on from these stories and characters...
