βYou donβt really have to drive me home,β she said as the boy had started the car, βItβs only like... an hour commute, itβs fine if you just drop me off at the train station,β she added.
βAn hour and thirty minutes,β he corrected, βonly 30 to 45 minutes if I drive you back,β he then added, βand your friends asked me to drive you home, Hera,β he reminded her, his eyes focused ahead as he had started driving.
βI know, but... itβs not like I havenβt gone home by myself before.β
βBut your friends would feel more at ease knowing that you got home safe,β he countered, glancing at her before looking back at the road. βItβs along the way to where Iβm going anyway,β he said, shrugging.
The girl let out a sigh. βIs it really okay for you to drive me back, though?β she asked, still worried.
βYes, Hera, itβs fine.β
βAre you sure?β

It was silent for a while as Haechan drove, with only some song that Hera noticed as a Role Model song playing softly on the radio, and she tried to wrack her brain for anything they could talk about just so the car ride wouldnβt be awkward.

Haechan fought a small smile at her attempt to start a conversation, then replied, βThe same building as Jaemin, actually.β Before Hera could say or ask anything else, he continued, βbut my parents live near SMU. Iβm actually on my way thereβ to my parentsβ house, not SM,β he explained, earning a chuckle from the girl beside him.Β
βIf your parents live near the uni, then, why didnβt you study there?β she asked in curiosity.

βOh!β Hera perked up, scooting slightly in her seat so she was closer to the driverβs seat. βIβve never met her, but I have heard about her. I had to take Bio my freshman year and my professor talked about her,β she said. βYouβre pre-med, right? Same as Jaemin?β
βYeah, Bio Medicine.β He nodded. βIβd offer my services in case you would need any help for some Bio-related paper in the future, but Iβm sure Jaemin helps enough when heβs not misplacing them.β
The two laugh at his comment, and Hera couldnβt help but think about how good the boy looked when he was smiling. Earlier, when they had been with the others, although he did smile, she noticed that he had seemed distractedβ even distressed, as he had first been when she saw him earlier that night before the others arrived.Β
He looked better like this, Hera thoughtβ smiling like there was nothing else bothering him. He was just happy, at that moment.
βI donβt think I have to write a bio-related paper anytime soon, but I may just consider your offer, Haechan Lee,β she said to him, and Haechan only smiled in response.
Not wanting the conversation to end there, she continued. βSoβ¦ is it like a family thing?β she asked, and when his brows furrowed, she continued, βtaking up med, I mean,β she clarified. βAre both your parents doctors, or is it just your mom?β
Haechan blinked a few times, and Hera didnβt fail to notice how the smile on his face slowly faltered. βUhβ¦ yeah,β he said, nodding his head slowly.Β
Oh, Hera quickly realized, this is why he looked distracted earlier.
She didnβt want to press any further, and it was obvious that the boy did not want to talk about his parents, since he cleared his throat and decided to change the topic, instead.
βHow about you, then? Why didnβt you study at NU?β he asked. βI mean, some of your friends study there.β
Hera shrugged. βItβs hard to get into NU,β she replied, βand SMU is a good university. Itβs always been the university that I knew I would go for college.β
βIβm sure you couldβve gotten in.β
βNeo University?β Hera laughed, knowing that he was just saying that to be nice, since he was smart enough to get into the university. βYou donβt know me enough to say that.β

They both held eye contact only for a second, but it somehow felt longer. They both let out a laugh as they turned away from each other, with Hera leaning back on the carseat and shaking her head.
They both continue with small talk after that before they eventually fall back into silence, this time more comfortable than earlier.

Hera jumped up from her spot on the couch of Jaeminβs living room as the front door suddenly burst open, fully expecting her best friend. Instead, she saw a familiar boy walk in, looking slightly distressed.
βPlease tell me you have some alcohol here because I cannot go back to my parentsβ house without at least a bit ofβ oh.β He stopped in his tracks as he saw the girl standing in the middle of the living room, looking back at him with furrowed eyebrows. βYouβre notβ¦ Jaemin,β he stated.
Hera then let out a laugh, now recognizing who he was from the picture Jaemin had sent her earlier. βNo, Iβm not,β she confirmed. βYou must be his friend, Haechan?β She asked.
βUh, yeah,β he replied before chuckling awkwardly.
βJaeminβs at the fast food restaurant nearby to get food, in case you werenβt aware,β she informed him, the boy nodding and muttering an βohβ. βI think he has beer in the fridge, but thatβs it,β she added.
Haechan rubbed the back of his neck, letting out an awkward laugh. βRight, Iβm notβ¦ Iβm not actually going to get drunk before going to my parentsβ house, thatβsβ that was just a joke,β he clarified.
βHeyββ she raised both her handsβ βI donβt judge. My parents drive me crazy sometimes, too,β she joked.
He let out a huff. βThey drive me crazy, alright,β he mumbled before lightly shaking his head. βAnyway, uh, did he say when heβs coming back?β
βNot really, but Iβm sure heβll be back soon.β
βHuh. Why didnβt he just have it delivered?β
She shrugged. βI asked him the same thing, he said he didnβt think to do that. I didn't know he wasn't home yet when he asked me to come over,β she explained.
βOh!" she suddenly perked up, "Iβm Hera, by the way," she introduced herself, "Hera Seo. Sorry, I didnβt start with that.β She smiled sheepishly at the boy. βIβm Jaeminβs friend.β
Haechan looked at her as if in recognition βOh, youβre the childhood best friend who is an education major from SMU?β He tilted his head to the side. βEnglish educ, right?β
βYep. Thatβs me.β
He smiled at her. βIβve heard a lot about you from them,β he said. βIβm Haechan, by the wayβ you already knew thatββ he laughedβ βanyway, uh, it was nice to meet you, Hera.β

thinking about an episode au where it diverges from the main plot. it's set 5-6 years later β haechan is a doctor at a hospital in some city far away from everyone else, he's already lost contact with almost everyone (except markrin), and he comes across someone he hasn't seen in a long time.
nari is a project architect working at her cousin's construction firm, in a city far away from everyone else. she moved there after graduating, and since then she had lost contact with everyone. she'd built a pretty good life there now, she has a good job, she made new friends, and then ... she comes across haechan, who's new to the city, and at first she doesn't want to interact with him at all.
they never really became close back then, nor were they even friends. they were acquaintances at best. he was always just her former best friend's boyfriend back then so she never felt the need to have some sort of close relationship with him, so seeing him again was slightly awkward. but then she finds out he's her new neighbor... and all of a sudden she keeps seeing him anywhere she goes β at the grocery store, at the coffee shop near her work, at a fast food restaurant, at a convenience store, the hospital (ok to be fair, he does work there...), and suddenly it felt like he was just everywhere.
so, when they both end up being at the same bar at the same night, with the same group of people (turns out they have mutual "new friends" in the city), they can't help but actually start talking to each other. one conversation turns into getting each other's contacts and texting each other, to seeing each other at the grocery store then shopping together, to seeing each other at the coffee shop and deciding to sit together, to hanging out at each other's places and ordering take out (because it's movie night and turns out they actually have quite a few similar interests), to developing a genuine friendship they never thought they would have (nari being the only sense of familiarity for haechan in a city he's not really familiar with), to hanging out and making plans together despite being busy with work because β because somehow, they feel less tired when they're with each other, a respite from their busy lives β and to eventually, coming to the realization that... oh, they're starting to develop feelings for each other.
then, conflict arrives in the form of hera seo, who is in the city for a conference, and sees both her (former) best friend and ex-boyfriend "hanging out", years after the last time she saw them.
guys this has been plaguing my mind for MONTHS so im giving them to u so we can be haunted by the possibility of hyucknari together 𫦠also if this feels like a plot to a 2000s tv drama,,, thats because they are dair coded to me ok HAHAHAH
