nagadoctor:
Sano smiled a bit more at the question regarding bugs. "Heh… ‘bugs’ is actually a more accurate term, in some senses, since my interest does extend to some arthropods outside of the ‘insect’ classification—myriapods, for instance.” But he was getting off-topic now.
“In any case, there are many things that intrigue me about them. They’re marvelously adaptable, resilient, absolutely ancient creatures. Many humans don’t like them because they seem ‘scary’, but people are just afraid of what they don’t understand. That’s always been the case though. They’re remarkable efficient creatures too—social insects work together in perfect sync, as if with one mind. And even more solitary creatures are still evolutionarily streamlined, hard-wired for their purpose in life, whether that’s pollinating, devouring decomposed material, or hunting very specific prey.”
“Some of them do interest in a medical sense too. For example, going back to myriapods, many species of millipede possess toxins with interesting potential due to the benzoquinones they contain. That is…they could help with curing some of the more nasty diseases out there. ”
The rest of the conversation went incredibly smoothly until Annabelle left for the bathroom. He wasn’t sure what he expected Akira to tell him when pulling him off to the side, but for some reason, bringing up the lycanthropy wasn’t it. It caught him off-guard enough to let a few hints of his emotions around the subject slip out, but only for a moment. He hoped it wasn’t enough for Akira to notice. If he did, he didn’t show it.
Sano smirked at Akira’s guess about Sano being ‘popular’ at the hospital. It shifted to a full grin when Akira offered to drop by next time he was sick. Annabelle rejoined them after he answered the question about the hospital, so Sano made a mental note to text Akira later and tell him that he absolutely could just call him personally if he ever was sick. Then again, how often did werewolves get sick?
Once they said their goodbyes and returned home, Annabelle was in a better mood than he’d seen her in years. When he looked into her eyes, he saw nothing but joy and hope.
“Yes,” he agreed softly. Hopefully better than before…though honestly he was still a little stuck on the werewolf thing. His smile must have faded a bit, because Annabelle asked him what was wrong. And anyway, was it even his to tell? Would Akira be upset if he shared? Or did Akira expect him to?
He glanced back over at Annabelle, who was lying on her stomach, hugging a pillow and happily gazing off into the distance. Why ruin it?
“He really was…a lot like his old self, wasn’t he?”
Sano had never been one for opening up emotionally, so once it became clear that he was going to try, Annabelle gave him her full attention. She was still leaning against him; her big brown eyes focused on his face.
”A large part of the reason Akira lost his memory in the first place—indeed, possibly the main reason—is that he was attacked by a werewolf while serving in the army.”
Annabelle recoiled a bit in shock, her hands coming up to her mouth as she gasped. The knowledge that werewolves existed at all wasn’t a shock for her, no, no, she’d known about them almost as long as she’d known about the existence of things like nagas, angels, vampires… That wasn’t the part that had her gently trembling in shock.
“Oh no…Oh, Sano…Why? Why a Goddamn werewolf?” Sano himself had never told her about the worst day of his life; the day that had marked the beginning of the Kojima twin’s cursed existence. She knew the whole sordid tale. How they had lived with their parents in a cabin in the woods. How a werewolf had attacked them as children. How their father died fighting it off. How their mother went crazy from the traumatic loss and killed herself. How they were left scared and afraid in the cabin until that vampire woman, Elizabeth, found them by chance and brought them to Cain as a gift. A novelty.

While Sano certainly didn’t expect Annabelle to take the news well, he also didn’t expect her to be quite as immediately distraught as she was. For a moment, he wondered if she had some kind of past with werewolves as well that he never knew about. But then she said ‘another stupid werewolf,’ and asked if his family was cursed. Sano’s eyes widened.
She knew.
Akira must have told her. Four distinct expressions crossed his face, each lasting only a second as brief but powerful emotions washed over him.
In the first second, he frowned, eyebrows knitted in anger.
How did Akira have any right to share that with someone else? But that was asinine, wasn’t it? It was Akira’s story just as much as it was his, he had every right to share it with whomever he liked. Although…if Akira told her about this, what else did he tell her about?
In the second second, his eyes widened in shock as all the anger melted away.
When he first told Annabelle about his relationship with Cain, he didn’t really give many details, only that it wasn’t something that was negotiable and it was something he needed to do. Even if she had outwardly agreed, he still noticed she was unhappy about it. He noticed her attitude sour when he left to be with Cain, or when Cain came over to visit. She was probably jealous, but there was nothing to be done about it. But then…one day that all changed. She actually seemed to be in a better mood when Sano returned from his visits with Cain and more attentive to him than usual the day after. At the time, he’d just chalked it up to her finally coming around to accept it, perhaps enjoying his company more. He really didn’t think too much about it either way, but now the answer seemed obvious: Akira told her about that too.
In the third second, he averted his gaze, face contorted in discomfort.
That wasn’t Akira’s to tell, he hadn’t even wanted Akira to know about it! And he certainly didn’t need Annabelle’s pity; it wouldn’t change anything, it wouldn’t help. Except…it did kind of help, didn’t it? He had started looking forward to time with Annabelle after visits with Cain, and it wasn’t like she ever confronted him about it. She must have known he’d be furious at the idea of her knowing…or maybe she just didn’t want to make it even more uncomfortable than it already was. Maybe both.
In the fourth second, he looked back at Annabelle with a sad sort of smile.
Ever since his father died, he tried to minimize the time he spent thinking about the areas of his life he had little to no control over. But with both his relationship with Cain and the death of his parents at the forefront of his mind, he was overcome by the sheer hopelessness of it all, especially because now, on top of everything, Akira was a werewolf. And yet…as he looked at Annabelle, he realized how much he took her for granted. Sano moved forward to wrap his arms around Annabelle and pull her into a proper hug. He held it a minute before moving back, but even then, just enough to look at her with a softer smile.
