the real “problem with political correctness” is not that it’s considered offensive to use slurs, but that there are now many “progressive” environments where saying the right things is more important than doing the right thing. it’s why it’s so easy for abusers to gain traction in leftist circles (they learn the right words quickly and employ them to frame their own behavior as progressive); it’s why so much potential activist energy gets poured into fighting about language; it’s why moderate liberals didn’t believe fer/guson had a problem until the police emails with actual racist language were leaked. (you can do racist things, you just can’t SAY racist things.) i don’t have a neat conclusion here but a related point is that i’m so much happier since i started focusing on like, being a good kind caring person instead of trying to remove the word “crazy” from the vocabulary of everyone in my family
Just saying this is truly one of the best “discourse” posts on this site like……this hits the nail directly on the head re: what is going on with language right now and everyone pushing back in the notes only serves to further prove the point it’s making
Also point ive noticed as a southern woman, like…. if you are from anywhere that uses terms the internet or generic leftist culture doesnt like, you will have it made a bigger point than someone who uses all the right terms but bullies and gets everyone dogpiled and kicked off for minor things? And like, if you dont use the right terms whether because of reclaiming slurs or just “where i grew up this was the term” its impossible to make any progress
I have more experience on the queer side, (was way more common to meet people reclaiming slurs as identities, took a bit to switch from “transexual” to transgender), but I had so many people i knew who dealt with this regularly with race. Had one friend try complaining how the school tried being assholes about their hair, and literally no one could get past the “guys everyone i knew growing up called them dreads, can we focus on the point”
Like not only is the focus on “everyone needs to use the right language” used by abusers to just look good and get away with being actual assholes, it gets used to just find excuses to kick out anyone who might not follow through with that. Especially makes it hard at times to find support online when the way people identify themselves around you is considered out of date and people consider that a sign youre faking identity or morally less pure than actual abusers using the right terms
