watching merlin season 2 and I’m completely obsessed with morgana and merlin’s relationship. I honestly think it’s one of the most interesting dynamics in the series they mirror each other in so many ways and for example, the camera work treats them almost identically, when they’re speaking to someone, the shadow always fall the same way IN THEM as if they’re framed by the same darkness!! I get that merlin and arthur are meant to be “two sides of the same coin,” but merlin and morgana feel more like the "same shadow cast by the same light" and it makes me sooo ajfjowkdkaks

I'm desensitized to it because I'm expecting it now but I just remembered in my first watch that WAS him shifting gears all of a sudden.
They even acknowledge it in the scene. For one, this is when the soft music starts, but much more overtly, Will turns away shyly. I remember thinking we'd get a shot of him turned away where Mike couldn't see, blushing.
Because Mike started the flirting. Will was being light and teasing.
"haha, I do think you're an idiot but don't tell" "I wouldn't have to, I know you like the back of my hand"
See how that's DIFFERENT all of a sudden?
Yeah, I forget on rewatches because I'm expecting it, and because Mike was smooth with it, it worked well as a response. But he completely left the tone Will was setting him up for. And Will notices it too and gets coy because Mike started this.
And even if he inevitably denies it to himself later, he knows that too.
It's not flirty because it's flirty. It's flirty because Mike changed the subject from friendly jabs what he always brings them towards:
We're different.
He says it a moment later. Comparing Will to their other friends and isolating him from that category.
He likes to correct that.
He likes to go "we're joking the way I would joke with Lucas or Dustin. Just, real quick, I wanna make sure to remind you we're special and we're different"
Mike's way of flirting over the seasons tends to be deniable friendliness he would have with the others too sprinkled in with little moments of "but THIS, I don't talk to the others like this. Don't think you're like the others to me. Okay haha friends."
He's literally course correcting. This whole scene to me, I've said it before, is the pinnacle of 14-year-old "I want you to know I like you but only if you like me, if you don't like me I want you to have no idea".
Will is joking like a friend, he slips in a subtle tone shift 'but you know that's not what we are, right?' that backs off. Then goes back. Then calls them best friends, but in reference to what Will said earlier: "I mean by it whatever you meant by it".
But yeah. that scene is flirty not just because of the tone and not just because of the content, but because - like how the way they break out if is telling - the start is sudden.
It is clearly purposeful. They start light and friendly, teasing in a way that could be flirting.
But Mike shifting to this so quickly does make it clear to me. Maybe he wasn't conscious of all the connotations to it and his own urges...but he had a goal here. That wasn't him coming up with a fun back and forth banter on the spot, that was him skipping ahead to the tone he wanted to be in.
Wangji carving "lan zhan was here" into a pole while drunk is funny enough but wuxian carving "wei wuxian was also here" into the pole knowing full well his name is synonymous with the devil to these people while fully sober is hilarious
