if my wife looked up at me from a well she had fallen into with her big deep eyes and told me she was waiting for god to save her, then promptly burst into tears when I tried to help her, then said what if there was the teensiest possibility that god might not get her out because âwhy would I say thatâ I would simply invent a miracle bc that is my wife. my darling. my moronic pookie and thereâs nothing anyone could do about it

âwhoâs that?â quizzed elle.
all eyes were on the new face that stood at the door by the bullpen. you stood there, a binder wrapped tightly in one arm, and a brown paper bag clutched in the other. a black pencil skirt adorned your form complemented with a white button up. you stood there with you hair pushed neatly away from your face, your eyes scanning the room for something.
âiâve never seen her before- is she new?â jj tilted her head slightly.
âi donât know but she looks good.â morgan chuckled to himself earning a dig from elle.
âleave her alone she looks like a baby.â elle frowned.
spencer who had his head in a book until now, scanned the room, his hazel gaze fixing on you. there was something familiar about you that he couldnât quite put a finger on.
âshe looks around my age.â reid muttered, joining the rest of the team in studying the newcomer.
âexactly. a baby.â elle smirked at spencerâs defeated expression.
spencer shook his head, earning a pat on the shoulder from derek.
you scanned the room once more, suddenly growing nervous when you spot several sets of eyes on you. you inhaled sharply, shuffling over to the group of profilers in hopes they would direct you to where you needed to go.
âsheâs coming-act natural.â morgan practically smacked spencer, quickly sitting up straight from his previous slumped position next to the young genius.
âexcuse me- would any of you know where jason gideonâs office is?â you smiled politely, chewing on the inside of your cheek.
your eyes met spencerâs and a light blush dusted over your cheeks.
âjust up- up those stairs and to the right.â spencer internally cursed as he stuttered out directions.
âthank you so much.â you gave him another shy smile, nodding to the others before you turned, sauntering away to gideonâs office.
âreal smooth, pretty boy.â derek shot spencer a shit eating grin, the older man slinging an arm around the blushing mess that was dr. spencer reid.
a few minutes later, everyone had gotten back to their respective reports, spencer was scribbling away at lightning speed, his interaction with you playing in the back of his mind.
over the low mumbling throughout the bullpen, the door to gideonâs office could be heard shutting. the special agent walking down the steps with you in tow. you were making quiet conversation, the binder and paper bag once in your grasp was gone.
derek leaned over spencerâs desk, all eyes were yet again on you.
you and gideon came to an abrupt stop right by where everyone was congregating.
âthanks again for dropping my lunch, sweetie.â gideon gave you a warm smile before giving you a quick hug which you returned gratefully.
âsweetie?â jj blinked.
âwell if iâm too old for her then he certainly is-â derek was cut off by a stack of case files being dropped onto his desk by none other than aaron hotchner.
âno problem, iâll see you at home.â you gave gideon another smile before walking away, your eyes meeting spencerâs once more before you left causing his cheeks to burn up.
âthatâs his daughter.â hotch scoffed, shaking his head as he walked off.
âdaughter?!â
âProtecting you is all part of the plan.â

CLUELESS | Spencer Reid x reader
description: Spencer's got a crush, too bad you're entirely clueless to his dilemma. (S3!Spencer in mind)
length 1.2k
At first heâd thought it was the worldâs gentlest form of rejection, how you would dodge his questions, barely bat an eye at him laying himself bare for you, thought that maybe you were pretending not to see the way his hands shook and voice quivered to save him some face.Â
âI-I was wondering if you wanted to go see Zodiac at the movie theatre?â He stammered, obsessively tucking his hair behind his ear because it felt like it was ticking his cheeks, or perhaps that was just some residual sweat gathering on his temple because you were just so pretty when you looked at him like that, your eyes wide and excited, waiting for him to finish speaking because you always loved to listen to him, âI was thinking we could try comparing it to the actual case and figure out how accurate their hollywood version of it is,âÂ
Your face lit up like the fourth of July, and your smile was blinding, âOh, I love the movies! Itâs going to be so fun, Spence!â You chirped, whirling around in your desk chair to meet Emilyâs bored stiff expression as she scrolled through her computer, âEm, Spencer wants us to go see Zodiac, you in?âÂ
Spencer paled, because that was not what heâd meant by we whatsoever. It wasnât that he held anything against Emily, nor JJ or Penelope as they were quickly roped into the plans as well, he just hadn't had them in mind when he thought to ask you out on a date. From what he could tell you hadnât escaped spending time with him alone on purpose. He just hadnât quite been specific in his question, it was an easy mistake to make.Â
But you looked so excited as you organised who was getting what snacks, quickly dibsing the seat slap bang in the middle of everyone so you wouldnât feel like anyone got left out. He thought his chest stuttered when you grabbed his hand and asked if you could sit with him since heâd remember the most about the original case, and youâd need his big brain for the little game he had planned.Â
Spencer agreed, instead of trying to make it clear what heâd meant by his original question, because he hated disappointing people and the other girls seemed just as thrilled to go see the movie as you were. It wasnât until Morgan slapped him on the back with a chuckle, having watched the whole thing from his own desk that Spencer felt truly dumb.Â
âYouâre going to have to try better than that, pretty boy,â He exclaimed, and Spencer bit his lip in thought, âTry asking her to do something in a way that leaves no room for confusion, girls like it when youâre direct,âÂ
And he nodded vehemently, because dating advice from Morgan was usually sound and bulletproof, how else would would he have garnered the ladies man reputation?
Direct, he could be direct. Sure, Spencer could be direct.Â
He swallowed heavily just thinking about it.Â
â
âThese are for you,â Spencer jumped in before you could get sidetracked by chatting his ear off about the squirrel youâd nearly ran over on your way to work, and your expression flitted into surprise.Â
He handed you the big bunch of pink roses and babyâs breath, and your mouth cracked into a smile immediately. âOh, Spencer, these are beautiful, you shouldnât have. My birthdayâs not for another week,âÂ
âAnd I booked us a table at that Thai place on your block that you always get- wait birthday?â Spencer stumbled over his script, the words heâd been practising all morning coming to an effective halt as he realised once again his intentions had flown right over your head. And yet before he could set his record straight, just like you had last time, youâd jumped at the chance of spending time with him without understand just what you were agreeing to.Â
âI love Thai food, thatâs so thoughtful of you, Spence,â You said, hopping up out of your chair to give him a bear hug around his lithe waist, the flowers still tightly in the palm of your hand. He reciprocated, even if his expression was a terrible mix of frustration and confusion.Â
It was like someone had cast some sort of spell over his words so that heâd never be able to ask you out on a date, like he was trying to speak in a dream, the words never really coming out. You werenât dumb, not by any means, you could be a little naive sometimes, but never cruel. Spencer had no idea what the answer was. He guessed he was right back at square one.
â
âI donât know man, I tried asking her to the movies, she thought it was a group thing. I tried taking her out for dinner, she thought it was for her birthday, I even asked if she wanted to come over to mine and she thought I meant a sleepover. Whatâs romantic about pillow forts?â Spencer sighed, leaning his head into his palm as he watched you swan around the office without a single inkling of his affections, âI mean, donât get me wrong, I had fun at every one of them, but I just want there to be more. Maybe she just doesnât feel the same,âÂ
âDonât lose hope, pretty boy,â Derek comforted, the seemingly appointed love Guru that had had to witness two weeks of Spencerâs advances get sidelined. He followed Reidâs gaze to where you hummed a song to yourself as you collected files from Emilyâs desk to take them over to your own. He bit his lip in thought, âI donât think itâs personal, honest, I donât think she means anything by it. You just need to be clearer,âÂ
âClearer?â Spencer said with raised brows, using a single prod of his converse to swivel himself around to face you, and your expression perked into a smile just from seeing him. Derek watched the two of you closely, his theory all but game set and match as you seemed genuinely excited to see their resident genius who was convinced there was nothing there, âThat shirt is really cute on you. It makes your eyes look really pretty,â Spencer said, in his most direct tone possible, because the nervousness seemed to dissipate when he knew you wouldnât pick up on his intentions. The only sign youâd heard him at all was the way your fingers ruffled his hair affectionately.Â
âAw, thank you, Spencer,â You said, a little bounce in your step as you passed his desk to your own, running a gentle hand over his arm, where his blue striped shirt bunched around his biceps, âI like your purple one the best, but this oneâs quite handsome too,â You replied, grabbing the other wad of papers from your drawer without much of a reaction and heading up the stairs to Hotchâs office, and he turned back to Morgan, throwing his hands up in exasperation.Â
Morgan laughed, shaking his head and yanking his cup of coffee towards him, âSheâll figure it out some day, lover boy. I give it a month, tops,âÂ
And Spencer huffed, wheeling himself back to his desk, his eyes naturally trailing up to the large window that divided them from Hotchâs personal space, the two of you discussing something jovially as if you were none the wiser to his internal predicament.Â
He made a note to wear his purple shirt more often.

Pairing: Five Hargreeves x Wife!Reader
A/N: The last month was pretty busy so I couldn't write much but I had a cute lil thought about this while I was on the bus cuz of all the Five tiktoks on my fyp
"Honestly Five, your head isn't screwed on straight! No one in their right mind would put themselves at this much risk over and over again!" You shouted, voice almost hoarse and mouth dry as you continued to berate him, as you had since you arrived almost twenty minutes ago.
Your husband continued to ignore you, not even bothering to justify his reckless mission anymore and you continued to shout, waving your hands around in your helplessness and frustration.
Five Hargeeves was a great man but the one thing you absolutely detested about him was how he decided he had to do everything on his own. You were his partner, both in the commission and in his life, but he refused to trust you with his own matters.
To a certain degree, you could understand him. He was so anxious about saving his family, so tormented by their deaths hanging over him that he felt that unless he oversaw every single detail, it would all fall apart.
But just because you understood, didn't mean you appreciated your husband putting himself in harm's way when you could've helped him.
"Are you even listening to me?! Five! Your wife is here yelling at you, and you don't even have the decency to look her in the eye?!"
He didn't reply and you were stuck staring at his broad, blazer-clad shoulders.
Then he shifted, taking a deep breath and you heard the shaky breath he let out.
"Five?"
He finally turned, eyes glistening, cheeks wet and lip quivering and you felt so heartbroken at the sight of him that you felt your own tears prick at your eyes. You immediately closed the gap between you, "Oh, sweetheart."
You sat him down in the armchair, perching on his lap and letting him hide his face into your neck, peppering kisses to the crown of his head as he took some time to compose himself.
"I'm justâso tired." His voice cracked and you felt like your heart did as well, pulling away from him just enough so you could kiss his tears away.
"Shh, it's okay." You whispered, gently running your thumbs over the peak of his cheekbones. His hands were gripping your waist with the strength of a vice, nails digging into the flesh of your hips.
"What do you need, Five? Just give me the word and I'll make it happen." You told him, now more determined than anything to shoulder the pain he was feeling, "I would move the heavens and the earth to make you happy, my love. Tell me what you need."
He slumped over in defeat, pressing his forehead to yours, "You. Only you."
You sighed, now running your fingers through his hair. A part of you was disappointed that he was still unable to open up, another was unsurprised.
"Silly request. I'm already all yours."

We can't be friends, but I'd like to just pretend
You and Spencer have convinced yourselves that youâre only meant to be friends despite the strong tension between you two. It only seems to intensify the longer you ignore it, eventually reaching its boiling point and forcing changes in the friendship.

Being in love is hard. Being in love with your best friend is harder. Itâs a merciless form of torture really, devoting yourself entirely to the person you hold dearest to your heart, but they arenât yours. It was almost masochistic, standing by to serve him in whatever way you thought he needed. Luckily, you werenât a masochist.Â
Not entirely, at least.Â
You were there for him when he needed, offering whatever you had to give, but there were parts of you that you kept guarded. To protect yourself, but more importantly, to protect Spencer. It wasnât uncommon for you to hear that you were âtoo muchâ from passing lovers in your life. A certain level of detachment was necessary to ensure the safety of Spencerâs friendship. He was the most important person in your life.Â
Maybe it was the multitude of degrees as a result of his intelligence. He never let you feel stupid or any less intelligent.Â
Maybe it was the way his whole body lit up when he shared information heâd stored in that beautiful mind.
Maybe it was the charm in how goofily he carried himself. The way his hands would flail around when he spoke to keep up with the speed his brain moved at.Â
Or maybe it was how he made you feel seen.Â
How he always knew what to say, what to do. How he remembered little details about you, like how you preferred the window seat on the jet. And how he went out of his way to accommodate the details, like giving up the window seat just so you could sit in it. He was an unusually thoughtful man, with everybody he knew.Â
Thatâs something you had to remind yourself of often.Â
Heâs like that with everybody. He has an eidetic memory, of course he remembers the little details.Â
If only you knew how wrong you were. Spencer was a thoughtful man, there was no doubt about that. Sure he was gifted with an arguably incomparable memory, but unlike all the things he had no choice in remembering, he chose to remember the little details about you. To him you were the closest thing to a real life angel.Â
It was the way you were the only person heâd ever met, willing to sit there and listen to him talk for hours. Youâd go out of your way to show interest in the things heâd share, even if you didnât actually have any interest in it.
The way he could swear he saw stars in your eyes whenever he stole an opportunity to stare into them. They would burn brighter if accompanied with the sweet sound of your laughter.Â
He felt compelled to accommodate you. Especially when you light up the way you do from such minuscule actions on his part. Spencer loved being the person to bring out your smile, taking any excuse to try and coax one out of you. Even if heâd slightly inconvenience himself at times. His convenience mattered little to him because he knew how much you did for him too.Â
Every morning before work youâd make the trip to his favourite coffee shop, getting him scones and coffee exactly to his liking because you knew he had a tendency to skip breakfast. His favourite coffee shop was a fifteen minute drive from your apartment and an extra twenty from Headquarters. You went out of your way to deliver it to him, even reheating the coffee yourself before handing it over.Â
Spencer wasnât alone in recognising your generosity. The entire sixth floor had noticed how both of you subconsciously performed acts of service for each other, even if nobody had brought it up to your faces.Â
âI know that look.â Rossi remarks, turning his head towards his raven haired co-worker, eyes on you and Spencer.
âYea..I just wonder if they know.â Emily mirrors his actions as she gives her own comment on the sight just a few feet in front of her.Â
Neither of you realise you have spectators observing your conversation. Youâre in your own little bubble at Spencerâs desk, the resident genius seated comfortably with his gaze on you as he speaks. Your focus is entirely on the man across from you, leaning in slightly, perched on the wooden surface.Â
âBecause stomach acid in the human body is typically 1-2 on the PH scale, itâs capable of dissolving metals such as certain types of stainless steels. Razors for example! The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy journal shared that scientists found that the thickened back of a single-edged blade dissolved just two hours of immersion in stomach acid!â His voice went up a pitch as he spoke and you couldnât help but smile.
âSo theoretically, an unsub could use a razor blade as a murder weapon and potentially eat it to dispose of it?â It was a relatively dumb question, but you just wanted to keep him talking.Â
âWell, itâs possible, but realistically I donât think a razor blade-âÂ
âSorry to interrupt my younglings,â A colourful Garcia appears in your bubble and cuts Spencer off, âbut I am here to let you know that the team will be going out for drinks, on Rossi, tonight! No exceptions!!â
When your head swivels to Garcia, you also notice the gawking pair not far behind her, shuffling off when they realise theyâve been caught staring.Â
âIâll come, but I wonât be drinking.â Spencer says with an awkward smile. They shift their sights on you for your response.Â
âSorry guysâŠI already have plans for tonight.â You purse your lips together apologetically.Â
âWhat no! No, no, no! You know how rare these nights can be!â Garcia frowns and grabs your shoulders pleadingly.
âI knowwwwâŠIâm sorry!!â
âFine, fine, but at least share whatâs keeping you busy tonight?â The blonde pokes.
You shift your eyes to Spencer, whoâs just staring at you with a curious look and then back to Garcia.Â
âWell I have a date-â You begin, but are interrupted by a whispered squeal.
Garcia begins a response, but stops herself when she spots a nonchalant Derek Morgan heading towards the elevators. âWe will discuss this in detail during Saturdayâs girls night. For now I will accept your excuse and remind you to dress your sexiest! Now excuse me while I go and intercept my sweet chocolate thunder.â
She grips you in a tight hug and scurries off after Morgan. The atmosphere shifts slightly, as you meet Spencerâs eyes awkwardly.Â
âYou have a date? Why didnât you mention thatâ Spencer titters.
âIâm sorry, it just didnât occur to me.â You try to lie, but Spencerâs expression gives away that he doesnât believe you. âOkay, okay, I just didnât wanna say anything because the last time I talked about one of my dates you got all weird and I didnât want to upset you again.â
âUpset me? I was not upset.â He protests and folds his arms across his chest.Â
âOkay what would you call it then?âÂ
âI wouldnât call it anything.âÂ
âOh really? So youâre not upset that Iâm going on a date?â
âNope. Not at all. Iâm interested actually, tell me about him.â
You eye him carefully, trying to figure out where his head is at. Spencer has a tendency to get sassy when he feels defensive.Â
âYouâre interested? To hear about one of my dates?â You question with playful caution.Â
âYes. Iâm always interested in things about you.â He spills.Â
Your reaction to his words is immediate, a surprised jump in your features, but you manage to mask it almost just as fast. Spencerâs just as surprised as you.Â
âI-I just mean- you know? Because yo-youâre my best friend.â He tries to play it off.Â
Thereâs no way.Â
You think to yourself. Spencer definitely didnât mean it in that way.Â
No he definitely didnât. He just said so himself. Youâre his best friend. Spencer Reid does not feel the same way about you.
It stings to admit to yourself, but itâs for the best. Spencer is a smart, handsome, wonderful man with so much to offer. Youâre too much work, come with too much baggage, just too much.
âYea, weâre best friends.â An affirmation more for yourself than him.Â
A silence looms as you stare at each other stiffly.Â
âAnyways, my date,â you decide not to linger on it for too long, âitâs with that guy I told you about, Nathan.â
âNathan? Didnât you go on a date with him last time?â A casual inquiry.Â
âYea!â You squeak enthusiastically, grateful that he had reverted back to his light-hearted self.Â
This was something you deeply enjoyed about your friendship. The fact the two of you could flow back into casual conversation no matter what.
âSo itâs a second date?â
âYes! The first one went really well, so I thought why not agree to a second when he asked?â
âThatâs good. Iâm happy for you.âÂ
His approval should feel better than it does. For some reason, it makes you uneasy. Almost as if you donât want him to approve.Â
He has approved though, meaning he isnât against you dating other people. He doesnât want you the same way.
âReally?â You want to be sure, scared that you might put him off again.
âYes! Really! If youâre happy then Iâm happy for you.â A fib that you were unaware of.Â
In truth, Spencer would rather crawl on the office bathroom floor than see you with some other guy. Fortunately for him, he isnât actually going to be there to see you with this âNathanâ. So he doesnât need to submit to such an awful torture. Maybe heâs being dramatic, you arenât his girlfriend. He has no right to feel such a heavy drop in his gut.Â
Part of him really is happy for you. He wanted you to feel loved, even if it wasnât by him. God, how he wished it was by him. If friendship is what he has to settle for to be near you, then so be it. Though at times it feels like it might kill him, you being the closest person in his life, but not close enough to the point where he could call himself yours.Â
âREID!â
Spencer jumps at the sound of Morganâs voice, finding it difficult to focus on his current surroundings. He missed half the team scattering around to different parts of the bar, Morgan now his only company.Â
âWhatâs up?â His expression shifts to a tight-lipped smile.
âWhereâs your head at man?â Derek probes.
âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âI mean I have never seen you this zoned out before. You havenât checked back in since you sat down.âÂ
It wasnât intentional, but since you walked out the doors of the BAU all Spencerâs been able to think about was your date. You probably went straight home to get ready, pulling out all the stops to feel as beautiful as you are. For somebody that can never truly appreciate it, not like he can.Â
âI guess Iâm just not feeling well.â A pathetic excuse. One Spencer finds himself making whenever heâs pulled out of his thoughts about you.Â
Morgan doesnât believe him. Hell, Spencer doesnât even believe himself.Â
âKid. You know you can always talk to me right? About anything.âÂ
âI know. Iâm really just tired. Actually- you know what, c-could- could you just tell the others that Iâm just not feeling great, Iâm- bye Derek.â Spencer stutters as he rushes out of his seat.Â
He doesnât even give the man a chance to respond as he makes his exit out of the bar. Heâs lacking the capability to force himself to socialise. The knowledge of you on a date with another man was something heâs been able to handle, but a second date with a man was harder to stomach. You must like him if youâre willing to see him again.Â
The ride home feels longer than it actually is. How far had the date gotten? Were you enjoying it? Did Nathan make you laugh the way he could? Spencer might lose his mind. He wondered if you had given Nathan the privilege of touching you. Your skin always looked so soft, his heart panged at the thought. He felt sick.Â
You were his best friend. You trusted him. He shouldnât think this way about you, feel this way about you. Unreciprocated feelings were something Spencer was entirely used to. Heâd perfected being able to put the person at the receiving end of his affections in the back of his mind. To ignore until it went away entirely.
Why was it so much harder this time? There is no universe in which you would ever return his love for you. Which is why he needs to force himself to love you from afar. It was a fact Spencer reminded himself of repeatedly. And he wouldâve kept at it, if he wasnât interrupted by the sight of you standing in front of his door as he stepped up his apartment stairs.Â
âHi!â His voice alerts you softly.
âHi!â You squeak back, turning on your heel to face him.Â
He canât help but note how heavenly you look. It almost knocked the air out of his lungs, except he noticed the poorly wiped tears glistening on your face. He didnât ask about it, immediately. Instead he just pulled you in for a hug, something he rarely did with others, and unlocked his door as he motioned for you to enter first. Another thing to love about Spencer Reid.Â
You step inside, more than familiar with the deep green walls surrounding you. If the stench of liquor wasnât enough, then the way you stumbled on your way to his couch was all Spencer needed to deduce that you had been drinking. A lot. He walks past you towards his kitchen, returning with a glass of water and painkillers you would definitely need later.Â
âHave you eaten?â He asks softly, handing you the glass of water.Â
âUm..â you take a sip and pause as you sigh, âyeah.â
The two of you just sit there, silently, stealing small glances at each other and averting your gazes before the other can notice. You know heâs waiting for you to feel comfortable enough to speak first. Except you donât know what to say. You feel so embarrassed. He probably had better plans for tonight, but here you are, pestering him again.Â
âHow long were you waiting?â He speaks up once he realises that you arenât going to.
âNot long, I had actually just gotten there, your timing was really good.â You mumble, forcing an awkward chuckle.Â
âDid Nathan drop you off?â Spencer hopes that bringing up your date might give you enough courage to vent.Â
âNo. No, I walked.â A resigned smile creeps on your face, not wanting to talk about your journey here. âHow was your night?â
âWalked?? Alone?? Drunk??â The words seep out of him before he can hold his tongue. âWhy didnât you call me?!â
âIâm sorry! I just didnât want to bother you!â You defend.Â
But you are bothering him. Youâre bothering him right now.
You bite the inside of your cheek, trying to hold back tears. Guilt creeps inside him. He knows that heâs not the source of your tears, but he didnât want to make you cry regardless.Â
âHey, itâs okay,â he takes hold of your hand and squeezes ever so gently, âwe donât have to talk about it.â
âWhy donât we play chess? Youâre getting better at it, you know?â He adds, thinking of a quick distraction.Â
Chess was a favourite pastime of yours with Spencer. You pull your hand out of his grip and use it to rub the opposing arm, his touch overwhelming you. He was too soft with you. You suppose itâs why you seek him out so often. Out of all the men youâve ever known, Spencer was the only one who knew you. It felt so nice to be known.Â
âY-yea..yes. Please. Letâs uh- letâs play chess.â You stumble on your words, eager to think about anything else.Â
Spencer retrieves his mini chess board from his satchel and prepares the board between the two of you. Neither of you utter a word as you play your moves. You appreciate the silence, because you know that you canât say or do the wrong thing.Â
âYouâre going easy on me.â You break the silence anyway, scared that the silence might bore him.Â
âYouâre holding back.â He argues and you finally meet his eyes for the first time since you started the game.
âNo, Iâm just drunk.â You counter.
âI was the one at a bar but youâre the one whoâs drunk.â Itâs a stupid comment, slightly cringy even, but he earns a genuine laugh out of you.Â
His dorkiness was part of his charm. Your laughter makes him smile. A comfortable silence fills the atmosphere as your eyes meet again. Spencerâs eyes were so beautiful, you could drown in them. Spencer in general was so beautiful, in every way possible.Â
âItâs your move.â He has to remind you, worried that if heâs allowed to look at you for two long he might do something really stupid.
âI-uhm- I had a shitty date.â You owe him an explanation for ruining his night.
He doesnât respond, not wanting to say anything that might make you close up again. He wanted to be the person you talked to about your problems. He wanted to be your solace.Â
âIt started really well. I thought I could see something more, but it turns out he just wanted the same thing as all the others. Thought that maybe if he got me drunk enough..but it obviously didnât workâ You try to lighten the weight of your words by laughing with them. âItâs probably for the best, you know? I donât think it wouldâve worked out regardless, I couldnât stop-â
Stop comparing him to you.Â
Normally, Spencer is the one with the tendency to ramble, but the alcohol wasnât making it easy for you to shut up. You just hope he doesnât realise where you were headed with that statement. You kept comparing your date to Spencer. Everything Nathan did today was a direct reminder of things Spencer would never do.Â
âCheck.â You choose to stop making a fool of yourself there.
Spencerâs breath hitches. Not because he picked up on what you hoped he didnât, rather because he was concerned by the possible implications of what you said.
âDid he..did he try to-âÂ
âNo. Oh my God, no!â You cut him off before he can finish the thought.Â
His shoulders relax and the silence resumes. For the first time since he met you, Spencer found himself speechless. He didnât know whether to comfort you or give you advice. Part of him felt selfishly relieved, at least he didnât have to worry about some other guy anymore. The other part, the part that felt disgusted with himself for even thinking about himself right now, felt a mixed range of hurt for you.Â
It started with resentment for the negligence Nathan displayed with you and ended with sorrow for how easily you brushed off your hurt. While he ran all the possibilities of the best thing to say, you ran all the possibilities of leaving his apartment in the least inconvenient way for him, interpreting his silence as irritation.Â
He should be irritated, youâre disrupting his night.Â
You need to leave before he can tell you to. Just as youâre about to mutter some bull-shit excuse, Spencer gently cups your hand with both of his hands and locks eyes with you. His voice is so painstakingly gentle, your breath gets stuck in your throat.
âNathan and anyone else who has ever allowed themselves to be blinded by their shallow urges is an absolute fool. Idiot. Moron. There arenât enough words in the English dictionary to describe how stupid they are for missing out on knowing you as you are. Iâve experienced a lot of good things in my life, none have ever brought me as much joy as you do. I canât even begin to explain how deserving you are of love and itâs heartbreaking to see that youâve convinced yourself of the opposite.â
Itâs your turn to be speechless. Of the list of things you didnât expect, this wasnât even on the list. You should have expected it. It was in Spencerâs nature to prove you wrong for underestimating his tenderness. He felt perhaps he went too far. Said too much.
âI-I just mean-âÂ
âWhy are you so nice to me?â Your heart feels like itâs lacking space inside your chest, tears threaten to build.Â
âBecause youâre my f-friend.â He struggles to utter the last word.
âFriend..â You nervously laugh.
The meaning behind his words donât register in your drunken state. All your focus is diverted to the feeling of his calloused skin on yours. The liquor in your veins awakens dazed boldness. One youâd be too wary of displaying otherwise. You allow your fingers to dance against his, an act of intimacy not reserved for friends. He doesnât stop you either.Â
âYou knowâŠâÂ
itâs almost not even a whisper,Â
â...if I wasnât who I amâŠâÂ
but Spencer was an expert in tuning out everything else to focus solely on your voice,
â...maybe you could love me the way I love you.â
And the world, as Spencer knows it, stops. Your words ring in his ears and heâs sure his heartbeat has become audible.Â
âY-you love me?â He repeats, unable to suppress his need to hear those words again.
The validity of your confession doesnât bear any weight until you hear it from him, your motions against his hand coming to an immediate stop. You shift line of sight to his face faster than you can blink, waiting for his reaction so you can scramble to save your friendship.Â
Parroting your words wasnât enough, Spencer couldnât believe it. He had never considered it feasible for you to love him. He had spent so many sleepless nights tormenting himself over the fact. He wanted so badly to cup your face and tell you about all the thoughts of you that consumed his mind. To say those three words back.Â
âYou canât love me.â Instead he said four words that strained your hope for salvation. Heâd shoot himself if he had any realisation of what he had just done.Â
âNo, of-of c-course, I meant like an- a- amazing fr-friend. You k-know, like the kind of bes-best friend you only mean once in your lif-life.â And you unknowingly shattered that hope in him.Â
Silence has never been more deafening. Neither of you can look away from each other. Thereâs so much to say but how can it be said now?Â
âRight. No, yeah. Of course.â He forces out.Â
A fake understanding between you two. The expressions canvassing both of your faces display anything but understanding. Though youâre no longer physically touching, youâre still holding each other in your view. A few moments pass and Spencer is the first to look away.Â
âYou must be tired-â He starts.
You were still disrupting his space.
âRight, Iâll go-â You stand, ready to rush out the door.
âNo-no.â He sighs. âStay please. Itâs late and youâre drunk-â
âNo Iâve alrea-â You try to protest, not wanting him to go out of his way for you any longer.
âPlease. Iâll feel a lot better knowing youâre safe.â He begs, not just with his words but his eyes.Â
âOkay.â You murmur. âBut Iâm taking the couch.â
Under any other circumstances, Spencer would have resisted you taking the couch. Today? He was utterly drained.
âAlright. Iâll get you something comfortable to change into while I set up the couch. You know where the bathroom is.â He sports a weak smile, unable to meet your eyes again.Â
He watches you disappear into the bathroom after handing you some spare clothes. He sets the couch with the pillows and blankets heâd reserved for you. He bought them after youâd slept over a few times at the start of your friendship, wanting you to sleep as comfortably as possible so you would keep coming back.
Youâd just broken his heart into a million pieces, so fine that heâd never be able to put it back together whole, but he still couldnât not exert the utmost care when it came to you.Â
In the bathroom, you fight back tears again as you fumble into his clothes. Youâd worn this particular sweatshirt before, because you didnât anticipate staying the night. It was never planned, often you two just lost track of time because you spent too long engaged in conversations. After a while you started leaving things at his place so you had an excuse to keep coming back.Â
You can handle just being his friend, but you donât think you can handle not being anything to him. Was there something you could do so you didnât have to stop coming back?Â
When you came out and saw your makeshift bed for the night, you felt slightly fuzzy inside. Spencer had already gone to bed but heâd covered the cushions of the couch with a thick blanket and two fluffy pillows. A fresh glass of water was waiting for you on the coffee table with the pills from earlier.Â
Maybe things were okay after all? Surely he wouldnât have put as much care into your comfort if they werenât. So why couldnât you shake this feeling of dread inside you? Why did the air feel so thick?
You spend most of whatâs left of the night awake, curled into yourself on his couch, muffling your sobs. Youâve ruined another good thing. Pushed away probably the most important person in your life. You knew he was too good for you, he could never feel the same way. You got greedy.
Just a few feet away from you, Spencerâs in the exact same position as you on his bed. No rejection has ever hurt as much as when it came from you. He knew you were drunk, he knew you could never actually feel the same way. But arenât drunk words sober thoughts? Statistics definitely agree they are.
The first thing you notice when you wake up is the pounding headache. Then the dry mouth. Spencer had left a glass of water, painkillers and a bagel on the coffee table. You reach for the pill first, hoping that the faster you take it, the faster it kicks in. As you practically pour the water down your throat, you see a little note next to the bagel.Â
âPaper work day at the office. Make sure to eat and drink lots of water. Will tell Hotch that youâll be late/taking the day off. - Spencerâ
Thoughtful as ever. The bagel was still warm so he mustâve left recently. It was strange that heâd left without waking you up like he normally does. Your first bite of the bread jolts the memories of the night before and it hits you harder than the headache. Your appetite faded and the remorse set in.Â
Shit.Â
You and Spencer have always been able to bounce back, but the damage you caused last night might be irreparable. Say Spencer does forget about it, can you? You always knew he couldnât love you back, but you never imagined that he would forbid you to love him in the first place. As much as you didnât want to face Spencer right now, work was the best place for you to be if you didnât want to go mad thinking about last night.Â
Youâd have to change into appropriate work attire first, so a trip back to your place was warranted. The whole uber ride back to your apartment you think of things to say when you see him. Things didnât need to change. You had to apologise, obviously, but there had to be some way of apologising while maintaining normalcy. The best start was getting him his coffee and scones like you usually did.Â
Meanwhile at the office, Spencer was stuck on the same page of his file. It had never taken him more than a few seconds to turn a page, but he wasnât actually reading the words. You took up every thought in his mind again. He wondered if you were awake yet, if you remembered the events of the night before.Â
âYou know if I wasnât who I am, maybe you could love me the way I love you.â
When he initially heard you say it, all he heard was that you love him.
âYou know if I wasnât who I am, maybe you could love me the way I love you.â
When he said it out loud to himself all he wanted to do was tell you how much he does love you, but the chance was ripped away from him just as fast as it was given to him. Did you even care? Or was it just an insignificant event to you? It was a lot easier to accept that you could never love him the same way before he had a taste of what it would be like if you did.Â
There was this moment, when your fingers were fiddling with his and you said those words, just a second where he experienced what it could be like. He canât go back to how it was, not now that he knows how it couldâve been. In order to protect himself from unravelling completely he has to let you go. An impossible task, considering you work together.Â
âI brought coffee.â Your expression is tentative.Â
Spencer looks up to see you standing above him, holding his daily coffee and scones in hand. There are no traces of the night before to be seen on you. Your makeup is fresh and youâd clearly changed clothes. You looked perfectly angelic, as always. If it were any other day, your gesture wouldâve made him feel like the most special person in the world. Today, it felt like the cruellest thing in the world.Â
âDo you wanna come with me while I heat it up? Or should I just bring it back to you?â You prompt.Â
âNo.â He rises from his seat and pries it out from your hand. âI can do it. Thank you.âÂ
Before you comprehend whatâs happened, Spencerâs walked away. You try to follow him to the kitchen, but when you get there heâs nowhere to be seen. This seems to be a trend for the next few days. You find some excuse to try for conversation and he shuts it down after about one sentence. Thatâs if youâre able to get close enough to him for that sentence. Itâs becoming more and more obvious that heâs avoiding you.Â
You decide to give him space after about a week of it, wishing everyday that you could go back in time and change things. Around the two week mark, he starts giving you the cold shoulder, not even so much as looking at you. He couldnât look at you. It was taking everything in him to force himself away from you, but it was easier than being near you. You werenât the only one who could feel this change in your dynamic, the team was just as confused.
Theyâd all tried to investigate the root of this shift, individually directing casual questions to both of you in conversations. Youâd both just brushed it off, not wanting to be the burden of the topic. Spencer had been doing so well in keeping his distance, but eventually, Hotch made the decision that enough is enough.
The BAU was in Chicago this week, hunting down another unsub who thought he was too smart to get caught. This was one of those cases that would stick with you for a while, so tensions were already high amongst everyone. Nobody was more on edge than Spencer and now he was forced in a car with you, driving around the city, chasing leads.Â
Rarely did he ever get behind the wheel, but he knew he would need any distraction he could get. Driving was supposed to mean he wouldnât be stuck in the passenger seat, fighting the urge to stare at you. Now he was fighting the urge to stare at you from the driver's seat. He hated being in love. You were trying your best to stay silent and looking out the window at the passing buildings.Â
âAre you hungry?âÂ
Thatâs the first time in a month that Spencerâs been the first one to speak. He tried not to. Like he tried not to pay attention to your routine. It wasnât possible. No matter how hard he tried, there were just some things Spencer couldnât not do in regards to you. The most important thing was that he couldnât not care.Â
He knew you hadn't been eating properly. You had a tendency to forget about your well-being during hard cases. You were probably hungry. Somebody had to take care of you because you most definitely werenât going to. He was right. The thought of food made your stomach growl. It was wicked timing.Â
âNo, thank you.â You lie anyway, not wanting to inconvenience him further.Â
âWhy wonât you stop lying to me?â He mutters in annoyance.Â
âExcuse me?â You scoff, turning to look at him.Â
He doesnât look away from the road, pretending to not have heard you.Â
âSeriously?â You sputter. âYouâre ignoring me now?â
You huff as you throw yourself back against your seat. He didnât mean to ignore you, he just didnât know what to say.Â
âI donât understand why youâre being like this.â You mumble.Â
It was already daunting when he was barely acknowledging you, but refusing to acknowledge all together? When you were the only person next to him? That was just vicious. You knew youâd fucked up, but was this necessary? You had already spent so much of yourself trying to keep it together, being confined in this car with him would waste your efforts.Â
âPull over.â You say in the kindest way possible, which was immensely harsh. âSpencer Reid pull this damn car over or I swear to fucking God I am going to jump out of it.â
That definitely caught his attention. In all your time together, you had never spoken to him in that way. You had definitely never addressed him by his full name. He brings the car to a halt on the side of the curb and finally turns to face you. You push the door open and hop out, slamming it behind you.Â
âWhat are yo-â Spencer starts, but youâre already walking away. He quickly gets out and follows behind you. It doesnât take him long to catch up to you and he stops you by the arm when he realises saying your name wonât make you turn back around.Â
âDonât touch me!â You yank your arm out of his grip and keep walking.Â
âWhere are you going?!âÂ
âAnywhere youâre not.âÂ
He tries you by your name again, but when it fails again, he grabs you by the shoulders and spins you around. You hadnât noticed that youâd walked into an alleyway.Â
âGet back in the car.â He demands.
âI am not getting in a car with you.â You have never been this upset with him before.Â
âYouâre being childish!â He snaps, rolling his eyes.
âOh Iâm being childish?! Spencer, believe me when I say I mean this is the nicest way I possibly can right now â FUCK OFF!â You push his hands off you and take a step back, but he just grabs your wrist.
âListen to me,â he urges, âthere is a serial killer thatâs kidnapping women in broad daylight, torturing them and murdering them. And heâs threatened each of us individually during the course of this investigation. You cannot just be walking around alone, in a city you hardly know.â
âDonât explain the details of this case to me, Iâm well aware.â You snarl, your irritation increasing tenfold.
âThen why are you being so difficult?!â He screeches.
âWhy are youâfucking hell, I cannot keep doing this. Iâm not getting in the car when you wonât talk to me. Hell, you wonât even so much as look at me!âÂ
âFine! You wanna talk? Weâll talk! Justâget back in the car. Please.â He sighs in defeat. You still donât budge, so he pleads softer. âPlease.â
You take a deep breath and roll your eyes, stealing your wrist out of his grasp. Spencer doesnât move until you do, both of you silently making your way to the car.Â
Youâre both silent initially, not knowing where exactly to go from here. Thereâs one thing you know for sure, you wonât be the first to speak. Spencer catches on to that fast.Â
âWhat do you wanna talk about?â He snarls, shrugging his arms.Â
âCut the shit, I wonât get back in this car if I get out for a second time.â Youâre not in the mood. The two of you had avoided this conversation for long enough, it was now or never. Some part of you wished for never.Â
âFine. Did you mean it?â He shoots, briskly.Â
âWhat?â You didnât know which part he meant.Â
âThat you love me specifically as an âamazing friendâ, I believe was your wording.â His voice cracks and it causes a shift in his behaviour. Heâs no longer hostile, just hurt.Â
âIs that why youâve been avoiding me?âÂ
In your rush to get him talking, you hadnât actually realised that you werenât ready to talk about this. You were stalling.Â
âAnswering a question with a question.âÂ
This doesnât feel like a conversation. More like an interrogation, except youâre the unsub. He scoffs bitterly at your silence.Â
âSpencer, donâtââÂ
âNo, youâre the one who wanted to talk! You were so insistent, in fact, that you would have rather made yourself a serial killerâs target then get in a car with me if I didnât talk to you. And all of a sudden youâre speechless?â He snaps at you.Â
âYes! I was the one who wanted to talk! I justâ I canât understand what Iâve done to make you hate me so much? Was it because I said I love you? Did it really upset you that much?â You were both shouting from frustration.Â
âYou think Iâm upset because you love me?!â Spencer scoffs in disbelief.Â
âArenât you?!â You bitterly laugh.Â
Spencer rubs his temples and squeezes his eyes shut, mumbling some under his breath. Heâs genuinely never been this frustrated in his life.Â
âAre you being serious?â His voice strains in pitch, as he tries to keep himself a lot calmer than he feels. âIs this some sort of joke to you?â
âSome sort of jokeââ
âDo not interrupt me again. You wanna run away from this? Fine. But you will listen because I will not have this conversation again.â His tone is sharp, like a blade being held against your throat. It definitely shuts you up.
âTalk. Okay, letâs talk about how I have spent the last four years watching you allow undeserving men to walk all over you, letting them treat you like youâre worth nothing. I damn near drove myself insane trying to figure out why. Why is it something you accept for yourself? And then I realisedâ thatâs how you see yourself. You actually hate yourself so much that youâve convinced yourself you deserve it! Do you realise how infuriating that is?!
Especially because itâs the furthest thing from the truth! Still, I watched you throw yourself into this vicious cycle over and over again. You gave yourself away to those idiots, knowing that they didnât have good intentions, but you still hoped it would be different every time. I mean youâre a fucking profiler for Godâs sake! How can you expect others to love you if you canât even love yourself?Â
Thatâs not even the worst part! Youâre so desperate for their acceptance that you continuously neglect the acceptance you already have from the people who love you. People like Emily, Penelope, Derekâ the teamâ people likeâ people like me. I mean Iâve always known that you didnât love me as anything more than a friend, but your constant reminders feel like a punch to the gut! Is it that embarrassing for you to love me as anything more?
Iâve survived way worse things, but this is the cruellest thing Iâve ever been through. Because itâs coming from you! I just never expected itâd be from you.â Heâs practically hyperventilating for air by the time his speech comes to a stop, the vein in his forehead more prominent than usual.
Your jaw is tense and restless, twitching from anger. Some part of you still wants to keep this friendship. The louder part knows that thereâs no going back from this. Youâre not entirely sure you want to go back. Your entire body is shaking from rage. The first rule of your friendship was no profiling. Not only did he break that rule, he used the profile against you as if you actually were an unsub he was interrogating.Â
âThatâs not fairâ
His eye twitches at your response.Â
âNot? Fair?â Spencer grumbles in pauses.
âNo, that's not fair!â You cry out. âItâs your turn to listen.â
It doesnât feel like thereâs any oxygen left to breathe in the car.
âSelf loathing? Spencer, that's your projection! You love too hard and nobodyâs ever loved you back the same way. But just because you lack things you want in your life doesnât mean you get to take it out on me! And all this talk about love, but none of it makes any sense. You think Iâm embarrassed of loving you? Is that how shallow you think I am?! Youâre the one who told me that I canât love you. God, you are the most duplicitous person Iâve ever met! I canât believe I didnât see it. Youâve been giving me the cold shoulder because I love you as an âamazing friendâ? Because you love me and you think Iâve been neglecting you?!â
You had never spoken to anyone this way in your life. There was so much truth to Spencerâs words, but he had no right. Heâd touched every nerve in your body without ever laying a hand on you. Up until roughly twenty minutes ago, being seen by Spencer was your favourite thing in the entire world. Now? Youâd never hated the feeling more in your life.Â
Spencer squeezes his hand into a fist, knuckles going white and releases his fingers like if he were aggressively squishing a stress ball. If asked about a month ago, he would never in a million years think that your friendship would manage to dissipate in just a few seconds. He didnât think he could associate the word love with you anymore.
âLetâs get one thing straight. I do not love you. I do not love anything about you. Actually, I hate you. I hate how sweet you pretend to be. I hate the stupid morning coffee you bring me, nothing tastes more bitter. I hate to admit this but youâre right; everything about you is a brutal reminder of all the good things I can never have and I despise you for it.â He spits his words out with extreme tension in his blood vessels.Â
âI canât say Iâve known what it feels like to truly loathe someone before I met you.â You fire back, breathlessly, not having it in you to spare any more words for him.Â
Youâre not exactly sure how long the two of you have been sitting there just glaring at each other. Only when Spencerâs phone rings do you two look away.Â
âReid.â He answers the call. âYea, sheâs still here. Weâre on our way back now.â
The ride back to the precinct was silent. Even as you regrouped with the rest of the team, you acknowledged everybody but each other. The team was instantly alert to the change, but no one mentioned it at the time because of the high stress of the case. You wrapped the case up a few days later and only then did the questions start making their way around.Â
âIs everything okay between you two?â
âDo you wanna talk about it?â
âWhat happened between you and Reid?â
âWhatâs up with Boy Wonder over there?â
You didnât entertain any of them, Spencer had taken up enough time in your life. You refused to talk about him, look at him or acknowledge him at all. He shared that same incentive. Another three weeks passed as the team watched what was once the closest duo in the BAU, pretend that their counterpart didnât exist.Â
If one of you was in a room and noticed the other enter, youâd walk out without drawing attention to the situation. When leaving the room was not an option, you either went as far in the opposite corner of the room as you could or youâd simply pretend the other wasnât present just a few metres away. You wouldnât discuss intel with each other about cases, sharing your findings with anybody else.Â
Since Chicago, Hotch only assigned you with Spencer once more, but quickly realised that wasnât going to help when both of you begged to be assigned with someone else privately. If you were in a discussion with someone and they started talking about Spencer, youâd tune out entirely. After a while the hating game got exhausting.
Spencer hated pretending that he hated you. He felt an immense amount of guilt for the things heâd said, but it was too late to take it back. He thought it would be easier to deal with his feelings if he wasnât around you all the time, but it was just as difficult as before. You still lit up the dull grey rooms of the building. The only difference was that now he had to watch you shine from afar.Â
In truth, you didnât hate Spencer either. What you actually hated was that you didnât hate Spencer. You still caught yourself staring at him for long periods of time. There were days when youâd go to his favourite coffee shop before work and buy his order, only to give it away to somebody on the street because you didnât want to ruin Spencerâs day with the bitterness of your coffee.Â
By the fifth week since you had gotten back from Chicago, you and Spencer were no longer ignoring each other as much. Youâd gotten into a routine of professionalism for the sake of the team, only talking to each other about cases when necessary. That didnât stop you from subconsciously showing subtle gestures of love. These were a lot quieter than the gestures you showed when you were friends.Â
Youâd make sure that there was always a fresh pot of coffee in the office kitchen, so Spencer would have it ready to drink whenever he needed. Heâd make sure that the snack cupboard was always filled with your favourite snacks because he knew you liked having something to munch on when catching up on paperwork. Youâd keep extra painkillers in Garciaâs lair knowing Spencer would retreat there when a migraine hit.
Heâd ensure the aircon was always set to room temperature, you get uncomfortable if the room was too cold. Both of you were aware of the little gestures too, no one else knew your truly niche preferences. Neither of you was brave enough to actually go up to the other, though. It was all too much for you. No matter what was said, he was still your thoughtful Spencer deep down and it killed you.
Youâd tried to talk to Spencer a few times, building up the courage for days in advance. As soon as he noticed you heading in his direction, he nearly bolted in the other direction. His avoidance didnât end at the office. You recently became aware that Penelope had been scheduling rosters to invite you and Spencer to outings, trying to ensure you were present for equal amounts of time.Â
You were chilling at her desk in wait for her, when you noticed a little note with your name next to a date and time. Under that was Spencerâs name with a separate date and time.Â
âHey! What are you doing here?â She greets you.
âI needed to talk to youâŠPenelope what is this?â You hold up the little pink sticky note.
Penelope sets her octopus mug down and takes the note from your hand.Â
âThis? This is nothing.â She fumbles a bit as she speaks.
âGarcia?â You purposefully speak with warning.
âOkay! Okay! But you didnât hear it from me! Weâve kinda been taking turns hanging out with you and Spencer sometimes. But itâs because we love you and donât want to make either of you-â She starts a panicked tangent.
âGarcia!â You interrupt her before she sends herself into a spiral. âThereâs no need to do all of this. Yes Spencer and I arenât close anymore, but you guys donât need to go out of your way for us.â
âWell..â She grits her teeth and tilts her head.
âWhat?âÂ
âWe didnât really mean to. Itâs just we noticed that Spencer would never come if you were going. And both of you just straight up refuse to talk about it, so this was the best we could come up with.âÂ
âOh. Penny, Iâm sorry that you guys have had to do that.â That was all you could say, your head hanging in guilt.
âCan you at least tell me why you wonât talk about it? I mean it makes sense for Boy Wonder, heâs always been stubbornly private, but youâve never not told me anything!âÂ
You look towards Garcia again, thinking for a minute. You didnât know exactly why you refused to talk about it.Â
âI donât know, honestly. I just donât want to talk about it, if that makes sense?â You pull your friend in for a hug as an apology.Â
You felt awful leaving her lair without giving her a proper answer or a resolution. It didnât matter how professional you acted, this rift would always impact your friends and your work life.Â
Spencer would always impact everything in your life.Â
The guilt didnât spare you that night, creeping its way to the forefront of your mind every few minutes. It had been four months since your last fight. It was the longest youâd gone without Spencer. This had to end for the sake of the team. That was how you found yourself standing at his door once again. After a few minutes you finally knock. You didnât know what you were going to say, honestly you just wanted to run before he answered. You hear the locks being undone, but itâs not Spencer who answers when that door finally swings open.
âYes?âÂ
Itâs a woman, one you've never seen before. Youâre taken aback and look around to make sure you got the right apartment. This was definitely Spencerâs apartment, youâd been here a hundred times before. And some woman was answering his door for him. Some very beautiful woman.Â
âCan I help you?â She follows up, looking you up and down.Â
âHi, yeah, sorry, isâumâ is Spencer here?â
âWhoâs asking?â Sheâs definitely not very friendly.Â
âWe work together. Is he here or not?â You didnât have the patience for this, annoyance seeping through your pores.Â
âWhoâs at the door?â His voice emerges from behind her and he finally shows up. âOh.â
âHey.â You glance away as soon as you see him.Â
âCould you give me a minute?â He turns to the woman. She flashes a sickly sweet smile and kisses his cheek before disappearing inside. Spencer shuffles out to the corridor, closing the door behind him.
âThatâuhâthat wasââ He stops himself, clearing his throat and switching to his professional voice. âWhat are you doing here?â
Cold.
âI was hoping we could talk.â You bite the inside of your cheek, trying to play off what you just saw.Â
âWhat more is there to say?âÂ
âAbout the team. I came over to, um, apologise and maybe move past things for the sake of the team.â You were looking everywhere but at him.Â
âHonestly?â His eyes are on you though. âI donât care. And even if I did, I donât want to hear it.âÂ
He starts to walk away, but turns back and mentions your name like itâs the most vile word in the dictionary. âPlease donât come back here. Itâs hard enough at work, I donât want to see your face in my personal time too.âÂ
With that he re-enters his apartment, leaving you standing in the hallway. Itâs hard to imagine that this man was once your best friend. If you didnât know about all the good times, you wouldnât have believed it. Every tear that your body could ever produce streamed out of you for the rest of the night. Once you had made it back to your apartment, they broke out in sobs. In your line of work, you had survived being shot at, almost blown up and even a kidnapping once.
The man you loved with every fibre of your being looking at you like you were less than filth under a person's shoes was your breaking point. There was no way you were going to face him again. You needed to forget about Spencer Reid, which meant a fresh start. This city was a constant reminder of his essence, you couldnât stay. You plopped down on your bed with your work bag, reaching into it for your work computer. Hands twitching as you type.Â
You remember being so proud when David Rossi recommended you for the FBIâs Behavioural Analysis Unit. You were even more ecstatic when Hotch actually requested your transfer there. You had worked your ass off for it. It was there that you met the infamous Doctor Reid. He was much different than how you had imagined him. He was so charming, friendly and so down to earth, not liking him wasnât an option. The two of you had so much in common, despite being so different, it was the foundation for your friendship. His caring nature pulled you in further, you soon found yourself deeply in love with him.Â
Tears flooded your keyboard as all your memories with him flash through your brain. His friendship was a beautiful bonus of the job you once loved, you never thought that he would become the reason youâd leave it. Yet here you were, furiously drafting your resignation to Agent Hotchner. There were so many signals in your brain telling you to back off, to open a bottle of wine and drown your sorrows instead, but your heart didnât feel like that would be enough. Your love for your job didnât outweigh your desire to run.
Spencer Reid was your best friend and being in love with him is an excruciating torture. One that you can no longer endure. You had never been more sure of anything as you are at this moment and you werenât going to give yourself time to change your mind. Your time with Spencer and, as a consequence, your time at the BAU had come to an end. Another memory flashes through your mind as you sign the letter off with your name. A case in Boston had gone wrong and you were really hung up on it. Spencer, in an attempt to help you move on, shared a quote with an author he had recently read. You bitterly chuckle to yourself at this recall and press send with no second thought.
âGetting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.â - C.S. Lewis.
Spoilers: BAU! Reader, friends to enemies, mutual pining, hurt, angst no comfort, whump (maybe idk), Reader & Spencer are both idiots, they should probably consider therapy actually, Spencer is a sassy little shit, but really just needs a hug and a class on communication.Â
AN - Youâve heard of enemies to lovers/friends, now I present to you the exact same thing in reverse (been done time and time again, Iâm not in any way original <3). You can blame Ariana Grande for this one. Sorry that I haven't posted, I've had insane writers block. I might be slightly incapable of shorter word counts, Iâll try to improve that. I apologise for grammar/anything that does not make sense, I am both an idiot and also was dealing with a bad case of the flu when I wrote this. Iâd like to thank @reidmotif for curing my writer's block and inspiring me on the second half of this fic. Thank you @starstruckbambi for proof reading this.
Drop thoughts & feelings so I can ponder on them. Always remember that Iâm in your walls.Â
Thank you for reading!
Icebreaker | Alexander Dane/Reader
I. Never Meet Your Heroes
Summary: As a budding actress and a big fan of Alexander Dane, all your dreams are coming true when you land a role in Galaxy Quest opposite your favourite actor. To your disappointment, Alexander doesn't seem to like you very much - but unbeknownst to you, he's trying desperately to ignore his attraction to you.
Read now on Ao3 or below the cut:
You were almost vibrating with excitement on your first day on set.
You hadnât taken part in the table read, as your casting was so last minute, so this was your first time meeting the cast and your first time playing the scene would be when the cameras were rolling. You were nervous, but you didnât mind - youâd spent plenty of time as a theatre understudy, so you were used to playing a scene against someone you hadnât rehearsed with. What you werenât used to, however, was playing against such famous names.
If that werenât enough, your main scene partner was to be none other than Alexander Dane, who just so happened to be your favourite actor in the world.
You wouldnât quite say you were obsessed with him, but you had seen all his films, and youâd even managed to see him perform Shakespeare in London once, though youâd missed out on seeing him at the stage door. You also had a poster from his performance as Richard III on your wall, and hidden away in notebooks youâd never shared with anyone were fanfictions youâd written about his Galaxy Quest character, mostly involving romances between Dr Lazarus and characters youâd made up that totally werenât stand-ins for yourself.
And now⊠you were actually going to play a love interest to Lazarus!
All your dreams were coming true. Your first TV role, in Galaxy Quest, with Alexander Dane, playing Lazarusâ love interest!
You absolutely, resolutely, could not fuck this up.
Your characterâs name was Bethany, a fellow member of the MakâTar race, who, like Lazarus, believed herself to be the last of the race until she and Lazarus meet by chance and the two are faced with the question of whether they should procreate to repopulate their species.
On your arrival, you met with the production assistant, who led you to hair and make-up to be fitted with a cap similar to the one Alexander wore to make yourself look like an alien.
You were almost done, your hair now completely hidden by the cap and the last of your make-up being applied, when the door was thrown open and none other than Alexander Dane stepped through and sat himself down in the chair next to yours, completely ignoring you, which was fortunate because it gave you an opportunity to close your mouth when you gaped at him.
âLetâs get this blasted thing on quickly, Lena, I want to get today over with,â Alexander grumbled.
Lena, the make-up artist, rolled her eyes and continued working on you with hardly a flinch at Alexanderâs abrasive attitude.
âIâm nearly done here, Alexander, then Iâll be with you.â
Alexander looked over and seemed to finally notice you. He frowned, then saw the matching cap on your head, and rolled his eyes.
âTheyâre going ahead with this bloody plotline, then,â he grumbled, then immediately grabbed a magazine from the dresser and stuck his nose in it.
You hadnât said a word, and yet somehow you felt like youâd managed to fuck up your meeting with him.
âDonât mind him, [Y/n],â said Lena, apparently completely unaffected by Alexanderâs grumpiness. âHeâs always like this. I must be his least favourite person on set because Iâm the one who puts his cap on.â
âThird least,â Alexander replied from behind his magazine. âAfter Jason and Frank.â
âJason Nesmith, he plays Taggart,â Lena explained to you. âAnd ââ
âFrank Ross, the creator, I assume,â you finished.
Lena smiled. âYouâve done your homework!â
âI watch the show, I know who created it.â
Alexander groaned and lowered his magazine to finally look at you, albeit via the mirror. âGreat, they hired another fan. When did this show stop hiring actors?â
âI can be both!â you said defensively. âBesides, whatâs wrong with hiring fans? Thereâs no point in creating art if you donât love it.â
âPfft. Iâd hardly call this show art. Itâs nothing but meaningless drivel, and this episodeâs no different, so donât flatter yourself into thinking youâre creating something great just because youâre on TV.â
âAll done!â Lena announced, ignoring Alexander, and she stepped aside to let you examine yourself in the mirror. âWhat do you think?â
âWow, that is weird,â you laughed, turning your head to the side to examine your new alien look. âYou canât even tell Iâve got hair underneath! I look pretty good, actually, maybe Iâll shave my head after this.â
Alexander scoffed. âTake the cap with you, make it a new fashion trend.â
âRight, Alexander, itâs your turn!â Lena announced, and the actor just sighed.
âFine, letâs get it over with.â
Lena gave you directions to the costume department and you left feeling even more anxious than before about your scenes with Alexander Dane.
---
Although your background was in theatre, you knew from industry knowledge that in film and TV, scenes were never filmed in order. So it was a surprise to you that your first scene of the day was actually your first scene of the episode. Your character Bethany was locked in a futuristic alien zoo, gaped at daily by an alien species that marvelled at âthe last MakâTar.â That was, until the crew of the Protector came by to rescue another alien from their zoo habitat, and Lazarus found Bethany in her cage.
You ran through the scene with the director a few times before Alexanderâs arrival. Once he did arrive, he only talked quickly with the director before getting into position, and suddenly you were moments away from your first scene.
The director raised her megaphone. âACTION!â
Lazarus approached the invisible barrier that surrounded the habitat, staring in disbelief at the figure curled up on the floor. The floor itself was wet sand with small pools of seawater, just like the environment of his home planet of TevâMeck. Without the rest of the zoo in his periphery, he might even have believed he was back on TevâMeck.
He glanced down at the information screen. It was all written in an alien language he couldnât speak, but he recognised two words: MakâTar and TevâMeck.
Lazarus walked around the enclosure slowly, trying not to wake the figure on the floor, until he was able to get a good look at them. Sure enough, they shared his physiology. Could it really be that another one of his kind was here, in this zoo?
A crash in the distance caused Lazarus to look up suddenly. Taggart, no doubt, causing chaos as he attempted to escape with the alien heâd come to recover.
He had to get out of there. And if there was a chance this sleeping figure really was another MakâTar, he had to get them out of there too.
Lazarus circled back around to the information panel and hacked the operational code heâd learnt earlier before coming to save their target. A few beeps later, the forcefield was down, and Lazarus stepped into the habitat, crouching down by the figure to wake them.
âHello?â he whispered. âCan you hear me?â
He grabbed the figureâs shoulder, rolled them onto their back, and recoiled slightly in shock. It was a female MakâTar!
The woman opened her eyes slowly, blinking away the sleep, frowning in confusion at seeing a figure looming over her.
Lazarus composed himself and knelt down again.
âItâs alright, Iâm here to help. My name is Lazarus, Iâm a MakâTar too. Whatâs your name?â
ââŠBethany,â replied the woman, pausing as if it took her a moment to remember.
âWell, Bethany, how would you like to escape?â
âI⊠I think Iâd like that very much.â
Lazarus smiled and nodded. âExcellent. Take my hand.â
He stood, and Bethany took his outstretched hand. Wow, his hands are soft , you thought as Lazarus pulled Bethany to her feet. She took a step, but stumbled. Lazarus glanced down and saw that she was favouring her left foot, her right being bandaged. Without hesitation, Lazarus threw her arm around his shoulder and helped her stumble out into the corridor.
âCut!â
For your first take, you thought it had gone pretty well. You hadnât messed up once! Whether or not Alexander agreed, you werenât sure, because he simply released your arm from his grip and immediately walked back to his original mark for the second take.
You ran through the scene three more times, filming from different angles each time, until the director concluded the scene finished.
What amazed you about Alexander was the way he switched between Lazarus and Alexander with ease. Action - he was a hero, a lone survivor who had to contain himself at the possibility of finding another survivor in favour of concentrating on a quick exit. He was smiling as he pulled Bethany to her feet, his eyes warm and kind, and just a little excited. Cut - he was an actor, a grumpy thespian stuck in a job he hated, just getting through the day until he could throw the cap back in Lenaâs face and stomp off home. He let go of you as soon as he could, not looking at you or even acknowledging your existence outside of the scene.
Ever heard the saying never meet your heroes? Well, you were discovering now why that was true. Alexander Dane was your favourite actor, your idol, your celebrity crush and the reason youâd pursued acting in the first place. And, it turned out, he was a massive jackass.
You werenât naĂŻve; you hadnât gone into this expecting your crush to fall in love with you and whisk you off on some romance. You hadnât even expected to make friends with him. But you had hoped to at least have a good working relationship with him for the week you were there and to come away with some fun stories about the week you spent on the set of Galaxy Quest.
Apparently, that wasnât to be. So you resolved yourself to give the best performance you could and hope the fans liked your character when the episode aired.
Your next scene took place on the viewing deck, Bethany having successfully escaped the alien zoo and finding herself on board the Protector. You stood in front of the glass that separated you from the green screen that would be replaced in post-production with the vast expanse of the cosmos, gazing thoughtfully through the window as the director took some establishing shots of you standing alone.
When she was happy with the solo shots, the director called action for Alexander to make his entrance.
âItâs beautiful, isnât it?â Lazarus said as he stepped up beside Bethany, looking out at the cosmos and remembering what it was like for him when he first looked out into space from the safety of the ship.
âItâs terrifying,â Bethany replied quietly, and Lazarus frowned at her.
âTerrifying?â
âItâs so big⊠so easy to get lost.â She raised a hand and lightly placed her fingertip against the glass, covering an entire galaxy with just her fingertip. âHow many species are out there?â
âBillions, I suppose. Itâs impossible to count. Trillions of life forms⊠and none of them like us.â
Bethany looked up at him. Alexanderâs profile was illuminated by the stage lights, emphasising the outline of his nose.
âHow can you be sure? Maybe others survived. We did.â
Lazarus shook his head sadly. âI donât think so. Even if there are⊠the chances of finding them are minuscule. Itâs a miracle I ran into you.â He looked down at her and smiled, not a trace of Alexanderâs regular irritation on his features. Lazarus was only kind, curious, and a little hesitant. âPerhaps itâs fortunate that I found you. So we can⊠keep the MakâTar species alive.â
âFor now.â Bethany looked back out at the vast cosmos. âWeâll both die eventually, though. Then the MakâTar are done for.â
Lazarus hesitated. âNot necessarily. There would be more of us if we were to⊠make more.â
Bethany kept her gaze firmly fixed on the expansive view from the window. She blushed slightly - you had never quite grasped forcing the blood to rush to your cheeks, but you could at least act as if it had - then shook her head.
âNo, I⊠I think itâs best not.â
Lazarus was stunned. He collected himself and said, âAnd let our species die?â
Bethany turned back to Lazarus, and as much as you understood her motivations, you selfishly wished the scene were to end with a passionate make out session.
âItâs survival of the strongest, Lazarus,â Bethany said. You very suddenly realised youâd missed a line, but your theatre instincts kicked in, and you continued. âOur people were squashed like bugs when someone stronger came along. One day, our conquerors will be destroyed by someone or something stronger than them. And so the cycle continues - until thereâs nothing left. Why delay the inevitable?â
âAll our history, our culture - gone ââ
Bethany shook her head. âItâs not gone. Itâs just a story now.â
The script called for Lazarus to be speechless, so you gave Alexander a few moments to let the emotions play out on his face, then Bethany glanced out the window again.
âI think Iâll ask to be dropped off on Atera. It always looked very pretty in the books.â
She glanced uncertainly at Lazarus one last time, and when his stunned silence continued, she walked away, leaving him alone with the crushing disappointment that he wouldnât save his species after all.
âCut! Great first go, guys, but [Y/n], you missed a line. After Alexander says âand let our species dieâ ââ
ââNothing lasts forever.â Yeah, I know, sorry. Got ahead of myself.â
âWell, at least you kept going,â Alexander said as he came up to where you were standing to take his starting position again. âMost TV actors would have broken character, swore loudly then insisted on trying the whole thing again. You held it together like a true thespian.â
You smiled coyly. He was complimenting you!
âWell, my career has been theatre so far. Iâm used to having to improvise on the spot without breaking character.â
Alexander smirked at you conspiratorially. âHonestly, I enjoy it. Keeps me on my toes. On camera, you stop and start again when you make a mistake - everything has to be so perfect. And once the filmingâs done, thatâs it, no going back. In theatre, you do it a little differently every night. Itâs so much moreâŠâ
He paused, looking for the right word.
âOrganic?â
Alexander looked at you with surprise, as if it were a wonder you understood.
You wanted to talk to him more about theatre, something you both clearly loved, but you had to do the scene five more times to get the right camera angles, so you returned to your mark by the window and readied yourself to do the whole thing over again.
When the scene was finally declared finished, you were done for the day, so you returned to the make-up room to get your cap taken off. Alexander had one more scene to do on the brig, so once Lena had released your hair from its captivity and you were back in your regular Earth clothes, you snuck into the back of the set to watch the cast wrapping up. When else would you get an opportunity to see a classic Galaxy Quest brig room scene being filmed?
Jason Nesmith was giving one of his classic Taggart speeches, all the crew showing rapt attention except for Lazarus, who was seemingly distracted.
The speech concluded, the crew applauded and set to work, and Taggart swaggered up to Lazarus at his station.
âLazarus! Something up, buddy? You didnât applaud or nod once during my speech. Was it not inspiring enough for you?â
Lazarus looked up at his captain and smiled good-naturedly. âVery inspiring, Captain, thank you. My apologies, I wasâŠâ
He glanced forward thoughtfully, looking at the cosmos through the window and remembering his conversation with Bethany earlier. Alexander in fact looked behind the cameras, and straight at you.
ââŠdistracted,â he finished.
âAh, thinking of that new girl, are ya? Not surprised, sheâs a pretty one. I presume. If she had hair instead of your head thing, Iâd think she was pretty. Suppose sheâs pretty to you, isnât she?â
âMhmâŠâ Lazarus responded, Alexanderâs eyes still fixed directly on you. He blinked, as if snapping himself out of a trance, then turned back towards Taggart. âYes, I suppose she is. Excuse me, Captain.â
He stood and exited the scene by the doors at the back. Jason finished the scene with a conversation with Gwen DiMarco, then the director called cut.
âGreat take, everyone! Alexander - your best one yet. You really sold us on how conflicted Lazarus is. Alright, thatâs a wrap for today, weâve got some sets to prepare over the weekend so weâll see you all bright and early on Monday!â
The crew began shutting down and you slipped back out so as to not get in the way. You were at the cloakroom collecting your coat and bag when Alexander, still in his costume, came up to you, taking you by surprise.
âJesus! Sorry, Alexander, you scared me.â
He smirked. âSorry. I just wanted to say, you weren't awful today. Did you say you came from theatre?â
You blushed, and you could feel that this time your cheeks really had gone red. âOh - wow, thanks. Erm, yeah, nothing major, Iâve just been understudying the last couple of years.â
âNonsense, understudies are vital! Learning everyoneâs roles and being ready to take any one of them on at any moment? No wonder you did so well today without rehearsal. Listen, the cast and I are heading out to a bar tonight. Itâs not often we get a whole weekend off. Would you like to join us?â
Surprise and excitement sprung up inside your chest. Surprise that the man whoâd been grumpy all day was suddenly being nice, and excitement at the chance to socialise with the Galaxy Quest cast.
âSure, Iâd love to! Where are we going?â
Alexander winced. âPaoloâs Karaoke Bar. Iâd avoid that place like the plague myself, but there are private rooms so we wonât be disturbed by fans, and the beer is good.â
âHow many beers do I have to buy you to convince you to sing?â you grinned.
âIâll be blackout drunk getting my stomach pumped before you get a note out of me. Is that a yes?â
âYes, Iâd love to come!â
âGreat - and no recording any of it,â Alexander added sternly as you slipped your coat off again and came back inside to wait for everyone to finish getting out of their costumes. âIf even a single photo of this ends up on Twitter, Iâm holding you personally accountable. We donât usually invite fans to join us, but since technically youâre an actorâŠâ
âNo tweeting, got it. I do just need to let my roommate know where Iâm going, though. In case of, you know, murder.â
Alexander frowned at you.
âItâs a girl thing. Go, get de-capped, Iâll wait here.â
Alexander sighed, muttered something about young people, and left you waiting in the hallway, wondering what the night had in store for you.
---
You didnât remember much of the taxi ride to Alexanderâs house. Apparently it took half an hour, but you hardly paid attention, as you were far too busy snogging him in the back seat to care how long youâd been in the car for.
You came up for air when the taxi pulled up to the house, and once you ungracefully clamoured out of the car, Alexander paid the driver while you stared up at the Beverly Hills mansion.
âYou live here alone?!â you gasped.
âWelcome to the rich side of town,â Alexander replied, his feet as unsteady as yours as he approached you and wrapped an arm around your waist. âWanna see the inside?â
âHell yes.â
After some fumbling with his keys, Alexander managed to get the front door open and he ushered you inside. He switched on the lights, and you gasped at just how huge and open the space was. Half the walls were all window, and those that were actual wall were lined with posters from Alexanderâs previous projects - mostly his theatre shows, with a few films here and there.
âThatâs the one I have,â you laughed, pointing to the poster of him from Richard III.
Alexander wrapped his arms around you from behind, his erection pressing into your arse as he held you close. âIs that so? How many wanks did teen [Y/n] have staring at that poster?â
âFar too many to count.â
âDid you imagine your fingers were mine?â Alexander murmured softly in your ear, one hand travelling tauntingly slowly past the waistband of your trousers. âDid you slip them inside trying to emulate my cock? Because believe me, mere fingers couldnât come even close to stretching you the way my cock can.â
âI - I have a vibrator named after you,â you admitted, anticipating building up inside you when Alexander cupped your cunt with his hand, savouring the warmth you were radiating against him.
âMy, you really are a naughty thing, arenât you? Letâs see if my fingers live up to your imagination.â
You gasped as he slipped his middle finger inside you, firm and thick, his skin slightly rough and absolutely nothing like your own.
Alexander kept one arm firmly around your chest, a hand cupping your breast through your top, and you had to lean back into him to stay upright. He buried his face in your neck, teeth and tongue exploring your skin, his hair tickling your face slightly. His thumb circled your lower lips, searching for that sweet spot, and when he found it, you moaned, which quickly turned into a hiccup.
Alexander smirked against your neck, but when you hiccupped again, he paused his sensual movements.
âHic - sorry,â you mumbled, your head spinning slightly from the combination of alcohol and arousal.
âSit down, Iâll get you some water,â Alexander said softly. He pulled his hand out of your pants, which you thoroughly disliked, but you did feel better when he deposited you on the couch and went into the kitchen to fetch you some water. The couch was warm and soft, and you felt like you could just sink into it and sleep as comfortably as on a bedâŠ
The next thing you knew, you were lying on your front, your eyes blinking open, though you quickly squeezed them shut when you saw the sunlight pouring in from the window.
You buried your face in the pillow and let out a groan. Your head was pounding. Great, youâd woken up with a migraine.
No⊠it wasnât a migraine. It was a hangover. You could feel the familiar ache in your stomach as it tried to digest the alcohol youâd consumed.
Youâd been hungover enough in the past to know your routine. Toilet, coffee, a greasy breakfast and a shower, in that order.
You reluctantly sat up in the bed, your eyes adjusting to the light, and your heart skipped a beat in fear for a moment when you didnât recognise your surroundings. Whose bed were you in if not your own?!
You looked around for a clue, and on a wall was a glaringly obvious one - a massive four-panel framed art piece featuring Alexander Daneâs brooding headshot.
Oh god, you were in Alexander Daneâs bed.
âŠAlone. Where was the man himself?
You rolled out of the superking-sized bed, which was difficult as you were slap bang in the middle. You reached the edge eventually, and when you threw the covers back and sat up, you noticed that your trousers and bra had been discarded, but you still had your top on.
You trudged into the en-suite bathroom, which was bigger than your own bedroom, and sat down on the toilet. Youâd solve the mystery of how you ended up alone in Alexander Daneâs bed in a bit - you had to take care of business first.
When that was done, you were feeling a bit more awake, and managed to find your discarded trousers on the floor. You couldnât find your bra, so you pushed that thought aside for later, and turned your attention to finding Alexander.
He was, you discovered, fast asleep on the sofa in the living room, mouth gaping most inelegantly as he snored, one leg bent and the other splayed on the floor, with one arm on his chest and the other behind his head.
You nudged him softly. When he didnât respond, you tickled his exposed armpit.
âWhat the fuck!â Alexander grumped as he shot awake, his arm instinctively clamping down against his side to protect himself from any further tickle attacks. He blinked, delirious, then saw you standing over him and frowned. â[Y/n]? What the fuck are you doing here?â
âI was hoping youâd know the answer to that,â you replied. âLast I remember we were at the bar, next thing I know Iâm waking up in your bed without you in it.â
Alexander sat up, looking just as affronted by the light as you were, and he rubbed his temple.
âI donât remember anything after the bar either,â he mumbled. âWhy am I on the couch?â
âDunno. Iâd suggest you were a gentleman and insisted I took the bed, but from what Iâve learnt of you in the last day, you probably just collapsed on the sofa and I took the bed for myself.â
Alexander grunted, then yawned. âUgh. Want some coffee?â
âIf youâre offering.â
ââCourse I am. More of a gentleman than you seem to think.â
Alexander pushed himself up off the couch and shuffled off towards the kitchen, then paused halfway to pick something up from the armchair.
âThis yours?â
He turned and offered you your own bra, and you blushed.
âOh⊠yeah, I was wondering where that was.â
Alexander passed it to you without much thought, then continued his half-asleep trek to the kitchen, leaving you to wonder why the fuck your bra had been discarded on the armchair.
You quickly pulled off your top and set about putting your bra back on, trying to be quick before Alexander saw you, but of course by hurrying you fumbled more with the catch and it took you longer than youâd have liked before you finally got the straps over your shoulders and pulled your top back over your head.
âHow do you like it?â Alexander asked when you entered the kitchen.
âStrong and black.â
âA woman after my own heart.â
You blushed again and sat yourself on a stool, looking around the kitchen, trying to remember something, anything, from your journey between the bar and Alexanderâs bed.
âI vaguely recall offering you to stay at mine rather than get a taxi to your place alone,â Alexander said after a few moments. He was staring at the coffee maker as it boiled, as if his memories from last night were in there. âBut after that, nothing until you attacked my armpit.â
âI donât even remember that much. I think my memory ran out of storage about 2am.â
âSo you remember karaoke then?â
You grinned. âYes, I remember karaoke.â
âMmph. Unfortunately so do I.â
Alexander poured you a hot cup of coffee, and when the first sip of the bitter drink passed your lips, you felt as if your soul had been renewed.
âThat is the best thing I have ever tasted in the history of anything,â you sighed happily. âBoth because I desperately need caffeine and because thatâs a damn good coffee.â
âSome fancy stuff Gwen got me for Christmas,â Alexander said, leaning against the counter as he cradled his own cup like it was his salvation. âI donât usually share it, so you should be honoured.â
You smiled. âItâs the greatest of honours.â
You were silent for a few minutes as you savoured your drinks, you trying to recall the previous night and he remembering small slivers of moments as his memory slowly came back to him.
He remembered coming back from the kitchen with a glass of water only to find youâd passed out on the sofa. He had tried to wake you, but you were out cold, so instead he hoisted you up and carried you to his bed. Exhaustion hit him, and he didnât want to share a bed with you without your permission, so he relegated himself to the sofa instead.
That was all he remembered. How your bra had ended up on the armchair, he had no idea, because he was certain heâd dumped you on the bed fully dressed.
Once heâd managed to send you on your way, Alexander sat down at his computer and logged on to boot up the security programme. He had installed security cameras around his house in case of a break-in, not in case of lost drunken memories, but he absolutely had to know why your bra had made its way to the armchair.
He loaded the living room camera from the previous night and scrubbed through the footage until he saw the two of you walk in through the front door, then he slowed down and watched.
You came in first, followed by him, and - oh, god. His hand was down your trousers almost instantly. You looked very pleased with his actions, but you were clearly wasted - almost as soon as he left to fetch you some water, you sat down on the sofa and passed out.
Alexander watched as he carried you into the bedroom, then returned shortly after to pass out on the sofa himself. The armchair was still braless so he sped up the footage, until about an hour later when you appeared at the doorway.
Heâd apparently not fallen asleep yet or was sleeping lightly, because you had only to say something to have him sitting up. You perched yourself on the arm of the armchair, the two of you exchanged words with each other - Alexander cursed himself for not having audio recording on this thing - and, to his own surprise, he stood up from the sofa, crossed the room in a few long strides, and his lips were on yours.
He watched himself sit on the chair and pull you onto his lap, and from the cameraâs angle he could mostly just see your back, but it was plain that the two of you were kissing passionately. His arms wrapped around you and held you close, then grabbed the bottom of your shirt and pulled the whole thing over your head. You reached behind to unclasp your bra and threw it over the back of the armchair, where heâd find it later that morning.
Alexander sighed. What on earth had he been thinking?
Well, that was no question at all. His stupid, primal, drunk man brain had thought, Woman wants to fuck me. Dick wants to fuck woman. Must obey dick.
Never mind how young you were, or how drunk, or the fact that you were a bloody fan, probably just eager to tell your friends that youâd scored with Dr Lazarus.
He watched the screen anxiously, waiting for something to happen that heâd regret. He watched as you pulled away from the kiss to say something, and his horny, drunk self grinned excitedly.
Had he really fucked you and forgotten all about it?
On the screen, you said something else, and his past self paused. He said something, you replied, and he shook his head.
You seemed to protest, but he insisted and pushed you off his lap. You were apparently irritated, by the way that you grabbed your top and stormed off, leaving him to drag himself back to the sofa and fall back asleep, both of you leaving the bra behind on the armchair.
Alexander scrubbed through the footage just to be sure, but nothing else happened until you appeared hours later to wake him up.
He closed the footage and leant back in his chair with a sigh. He was relieved heâd apparently changed his mind about your drunken fumble, but now he had a conundrum. Should he tell you what the footage showed? Surely you too were wondering how the bra got there. Or did you know? Youâd seemed just as confused as he was, and in fact seemed to not remember anything at all about coming back to his house. Or maybe you were just covering it up by pretending not to remember anything at all.
What would be the point in telling you? âHey, [Y/n], I checked my cameras and we almost hooked up but apparently I changed my mind and sent you to bed. Just letting you know.â
If you knew, you might think it meant you had a chance with him. Alexander didnât have anything against dating other actors, but he did have a strict rule about fans. He couldnât possibly be with someone, whether for one night or long term, who just saw him as Dr Lazarus. Besides, if you liked the show, that clearly meant you had straw for brains, and he had higher standards than that.
No, he decided, it was best you didnât know about that little fumble. On your next filming day, he would be nothing but professional, and any idea you might have of having a chance with him would quickly disappear.
---
Alexanderâs version of âbeing professionalâ was to be even ruder to you than usual. You had no idea why he was being so abrasive, but he hardly spoke to you in the make-up room, chatting exclusively to Lena and giving you short, one or two word answers if he had to speak to you at all.
With no memory of the events on Friday, you could only conclude that Alexander just didnât like you, though he didnât seem to like anyone, so you tried not to take it personally. Even so, being rejected by your favourite actor for no apparent reason was soul-crushing to say the least.
You knew trying to talk to him and getting rebuffed would just upset you, so you decided to follow his lead and keep conversation to a minimum. While the cameras were rolling, you had an intense, uncertain relationship between your characters, but as soon as the cameras stopped, Alexander was back to ignoring you.
Even with his cold attitude towards you, you still managed to make the most of the experience, choosing to focus instead on the thrill of being on the Galaxy Quest set. Your character was in three episodes, arriving towards the end of your first episode, spending your second episode travelling with the crew, and in the third episode they dropped her off on a planet to settle down after her years in captivity.
The second episode was the most fun to film, because you got to be part of the crew for a while, and interacting with the other actors helped you forget Alexanderâs permanent cold shoulder.
Just as youâd filmed your first scene first, you filmed your last scene last, and you travelled out on location for the scene, which was set on the planet of Atera.
Bethany said her goodbyes to the crew as they climbed aboard the ship to set off again, waiting on board as Lazarus stayed behind to speak to her alone.
âYouâre sure you wonât come with us?â he asked. âThereâs so much more to see out there.â
Bethany smiled sadly and nodded. âIâm sure. I need to figure out who I am outside of a cage before I go looking for adventure. ButâŠâ
She took his hand, which was soft again - did Alexander Dane moisturise?
âIâm very glad I met you, Lazarus. I thought I was alone in the universe, but⊠now I know youâre out there, I wonât feel so alone anymore.â
He looked at her searchingly, almost imploringly, as if looking for a last-minute way to convince her to stay.
âIâll miss you,â Lazarus admitted.
âIâll miss you too. Will you visit?â
âI want to⊠but we donât often return where weâve been.â
âOh,â Bethany said sadly, glancing away, and your heart skipped a beat when Lazarus gently put an arm around her shoulder and pointed up at a constellation in the sky.
âThatâs where weâre going. Always forward. So if you do miss me⊠just look up. Thatâs where Iâll be.â
Just look up. Thatâs where Iâll be. Alexander had been trying fruitlessly to convince Frank to take out that cheesy line, but it had been a losing battle.
Bethany craned her neck to look into the sky, then turned to look at Alexander next to her.
âThank you for saving me.â
Lazarus looked down at her.
âMy dear, I think you may well have saved me.â
Bethany kissed his cheek and smiled sweetly. Lazarus hesitated, but he let her go and made his way to the ship.
She waved him off, and when cut was called, you thought it curious how familiar kissing Alexander on the cheek felt, as if it were something you were completely comfortable with.
Perhaps you were getting too into character.
---
You were admittedly disappointed with how unceremoniously you left the studio. You had your cap removed in the usual awkward silence with Alexander, who just grunted at you when you said goodbye.
In the theatre, you knew straight away how people felt about your performance. Youâd sometimes hear reactions in the moment; otherwise, youâd receive (or not) applause at the end, and reviews were online and in the papers the very next day.
Television was different. You had signed an NDA banning you from sharing details of your character or the storyline youâd been involved in. And the episode wouldnât air for months, so you had no way of knowing how your performance would be received.
The other strange thing was that you could watch your own performance on TV along with everyone else.
Over the months since your week on set, youâd found a role as an understudy in a production of Sweeney Todd, and in between rehearsing for three different roles and occasionally even getting to perform them, youâd made some good friends with cast and crew members, all of whom supported one anotherâs various attempts to make a career in LA.
So when the day came that your first episode would air, you had your friends over to watch your episode with you, many of them also fans of the show, or if not they came anyway simply to support you.
You didnât appear until the very end of the episode, Bethanyâs getaway into the Protector with Lazarus and the rest of the crew acting as cliffhanger, but it was still an incredible experience to watch yourself, in full prosthetics, acting in Galaxy Quest with Alexander Dane - who, despite being a complete jackass, was still your favourite actor.
âOh my god, I so ship them!â your friend Stephanie, who played Johanna, crooned as soon as the credits rolled. â[Y/n], please tell me you and Lazarus get together!â
âI canât tell you what happens, you know that!â you replied, throwing your hands up in innocence. âBy pain of death. Or, well, by pain of a big payment if I was responsible for any leaks, and I can not afford that.â
âEiw, did you have to kiss Alexander Dane though?â Stephanie gagged.
âWhat do you mean, eiw?â
âHeâs ancient!â
âHeâs not! Heâs 53.â
âDonât bother, Steph, [Y/n]'s in lurrrrve with Alexander Dane,â scoffed Mike from costume, whoâd found out about your crush when youâd bonded over a shared love of Galaxy Quest while he fitted you for your Mrs Lovett costume.
âI am not! Iâll have you know he was really rude to me all week we worked together. Hardly said a word to me. Heâll always be my favourite actor, but as a person? Hard pass.â
Perhaps that pass would be hard, because as it turned out, the fans loved your character. So much so that you were invited as a late addition guest at the Galaxy Quest convention in LA two weeks after your third and final episode had aired.
You gladly accepted - you were going to go anyway as an attendee, but as a guest? That was a much better option. You gave your ticket to Mike, who almost cried with jealousy that you were being invited as a guest.
Youâd never been to the convention yourself before, as it was always in LA and youâd always lived in London, but youâd always followed the posts about it online, and you knew that the actors always went in their costumes, including Alexander wearing his cap. Would you be expected to do the same? You didnât even have your costume anymore.
You arrived at the hotel on the Friday night and checked into the room youâd been given. The guests all had rooms on one floor, separated from fans, and your room was right at the end of the corridor - no doubt the last room available as you were invited so last minute.
Youâd hardly begun to unpack your suitcase when you heard a knock on the door.
You opened it, your anxiety telling you that someone was about to tell you thereâd been a mix up and you werenât invited at all, but to your relief you recognised Lena, the make-up artist.
âThere she is! Thought Iâd bring this over and make sure you still fit.â
She held up a coat bag, no doubt containing your costume.
âYou do costume now too?â you joked as you stepped aside to let her in.
âI do at things like this - cheaper for them to send me out on my own. Have you gained or lost any weight since filming?â
âUh - I guess I might have lost some,â you said. âI donât really keep an eye on it. But Iâve been doing a show so that keeps me in shape.â
âOoh, which show you in?â Lena asked, and you told her about your time understudying in Sweeney Todd while she got you out of your clothes and into your costume.
âAw, Iâd love to see you in it some time! But I suppose you never know when youâll be on, do you? That must be so hard learning all three roles. Gosh, look at you, you have lost weight! If we were filming Iâd take the waist in a bit, but since weâre just here for the con, we can get away with it.â
âAm I gonna have to wear the head thing? I know Alexander always wears his.â
Lena scoffed. âYeah, only to lower the risk of Galaxy Quest fans recognising him outside of the show. I got it with me if you want, but you donât have to.â
You bit your lip and thought about it. You really didnât want to wear it, but if Alexander was wearing his, you kind of felt like you should, in solidarity.
Then again, he didnât care about your feelings, so why should you care about his?
âMay I make a suggestion?â Lena asked.
âAbsolutely not, you lowly make-up artist,â you scoffed.
Lena laughed. âYou should wear it. Everyoneâs still buzzing about Bethany, and since youâre so new to the scene people wonât recognise you without it yet. And itâll be super cute if you and Alexander both wear it for your photo session! Here, letâs get you out of the costume for now, Iâll come back tomorrow to put it on you proper.â
âWhat photo session?â you asked as you turned around to let Lena take the costume apart.
âHavenât you seen your schedule yet?â
âI had literally been here for five seconds when you knocked on the door. I havenât even had a piss yet, let alone looked at my timetable.â
âYou and Alexander have a double photo session in the afternoon. People pay $30 each for photos with you individually, or $50 for a pic with both of you.â
âOh, bloody hell,â you sighed.
âThatâs what he said too.â
âIâm surprised he even agreed to do it. He hates sharing the spotlight - although I suppose he doesnât feel threatened by me. Still, Iâm surprised heâd agree to spend any more time in my presence than he has to.â
âHe doesnât hate you, you know,â Lena told you as you stepped out of the costume and gratefully began putting your far more comfortable, human clothes on. âHeâs just a miserable bastard. He quite likes you, actually.â
You scoffed.
âHe hardly spoke to me all week during filming.â
âMaybe, but after you went home each day, heâd tell me how well you did in your scenes that day. And Gwen tells me he spoke highly of your performance after your episodes aired.â
âIâm surprised he watches the show.â
âHe loves to watch himself. Right, thatâs me done with you for tonight. The intro panelâs at 9 and Iâve gotta get Alexanderâs cap on too, so I can come by at 7.30 with some breakfast and coffee to wake you up while I get you fitted. Sound good?â
âSo long as the coffeeâs strong and black, you can do anything you want to me.â
âFlirt.â
Lena winked at you and left, and with the promise of a 7.30 alien head thing fitting, you decided to get an early night.
---
No amount of black coffee could have prepared you for the convention.
You were shuffled through back corridors to behind the main stage at 8.45, where you found most of the main cast were waiting, all dressed in their costumes.
âHey, itâs [Y/n]!â Guy said cheerily when he saw you. âMan, am I glad youâre here. This is my first con too, and Iâm bricking it. Iâve been to loads before as a fan, obviously, but never as a guest. Iâm so nervous!â
âOh, er, me too,â you replied, a little taken aback by Guyâs enthusiasm so early in the morning. You glanced over at the others, and noticed one body missing. âHey, whereâs Jason?â
âRunning late, of course,â grunted Alexander from the chair he was slouched in, looking as miserable as ever. âHeâll show up ten minutes late on purpose, all to get that extra round of applause.â
He didnât even look up at you to say hello.
You turned to Guy.
âHey, when they introduce us, dâyou think we could go on at the same time? Then we can power through that terrifying first entrance together. Iâm terrified of walking on stage after everyone else and getting crickets chirping.â
âOh my god, me too!â Guy said with relief. âIâm so glad you said it. Yes, letâs do it.â
Alexander snorted derisively. âWhat, are you scared of walking on a stage?â
âThis is a little different from a theatre show,â you retorted. âIn the theatre, they applaud at the end, and they applaud based on your performance. Here theyâre applauding us as people, and none of them know me. Or has it been so long you forgot what theatre bows are like?â
Alexander did look at you then, his eyes narrowed, as the others chortled at your dig.
âRemind me why sheâs here?â he grumbled to no one in particular.
âBecause we got about 200 emails last week asking if sheâd be here,â replied the convention host, who decided now was a convenient time to walk in. âRight, you guys ready to go?â
The convention passed in a whirlwind. You were hurried from panel to signing to meet and greet with hardly a chance to breathe. You met hundreds of fans, whose names you scribbled alongside your signature then promptly forgot, and you took every chance you had to remind the fans you were talking to that you were one of them.
In the afternoon came your photo session with Alexander, and finally you got a moment of peace when you entered the room ten minutes before the fans were to be let in - although, you suspected, they were already lining up outside.
While the crew got the backdrop ready, you collapsed into a chair with a sigh of relief.
âYou still have a day and a half to go, you know,â said a familiar voice.
You looked up to see Alexander leaning up against the wall, looking at you with amusement.
âI didnât think so many people would want to see me,â you said honestly. âSure I didnât have a line like you guys had, but mine still didnât stop. I think Iâve met more people this morning than I have in my entire life.
Alexander scoffed. âYep, and theyâll be back tomorrow, expecting you to remember them all individually.â
âHow many have asked you to say that line?â
âToo fucking many. How many have asked if youâre coming back?â
âPretty much everyone.â
âWhat have you been telling them?â
âThat Alexander Daneâs a twat and will probably refuse to work with me again.â
He laughed, but he didnât deny it. He sighed, then came to sit by you.
âLook, I know Iâm a twat. Iâll try to make this tolerable for you.â
âGee, thanks. No oneâs forcing you to do this with me. Couldnât you have just said you didnât wanna do a double shoot?â
âActually⊠it was my idea.â
Now that surprised you. You looked at him questioningly, and he sighed.
âLook, Gwen always hates these things, alright? Blokes are always trying to touch her. It happens less when a man is there, as stupid as that is, so Jason or I usually do a double shoot with her.â
âAnd you thought they might do the same with me?â
Alexander shrugged. âSure, why not? These basement dwellers donât know how to act around a woman - add the fact youâre gorgeous and all hope is lost. So let me know if youâre uncomfortable, alright?â
You nodded, hoping Lena had caked you in enough make-up to hide your blush at the fact heâd called you gorgeous.
As it turned out, Alexander was right - fans really did have wandering hands. After the third narrowly avoided grope, you pulled Alexander aside before the next fan stepped up.
âAlex, thatâs three guys whoâve tried to grab my arse already,â you whispered. âWhat do I do?â
âWhat? Who?â
Alexander looked around as if the groping fans might still be lingering, but theyâd long been ushered away by event staff.
âI told you, [Y/n], you need to tell me when it happens.â
âWhat am I supposed to do? Shout âhey, everybody, this guyâs grabbing my arseâ? Thatâs so embarrassing.â
Alexander thought for a moment.
âAlright, when it happens, you poke me with two fingers. Iâll pretend I noticed it myself.â
âOh, planning non-verbal cues already, are we?â you joked, the words out of your mouth before you could stop yourself.
He snorted and rolled his eyes.
âTrust me, [Y/n] - if we fucked, Iâd make sure you were very vocal.â
Your cheeks burned for the second time in that hour, but you had to push your sudden explicit thought about Alexander to the side, because you had two more hours to go of this torture.
Most of it went by without any more unwanted groping, but you were nearly at the end of the queue when one ball of sweat dressed in a very poorly made copy of Alexanderâs costume placed his hand firmly on your rear.
You froze for a moment, then remembered to poke Alexander with two fingers. His head immediately whipped around and he looked down to see the fanâs hand far lower than it should be.
Alexander may be grumpy all the time, but there was a difference between grump and anger. He was never really angry unless he was acting - but he certainly wasnât acting now.
You were fairly certain you didnât even know half the swear words that came out of his mouth as he yelled at the fan. A brave staff member tried to intervene, but Alexander simply turned his vitriol to them, yelling at them for not making the event safer for female guests.
He ended his rant by ushering you along with him as he stormed out, and you felt a mixture of emotions - relief to be out of there, guilt for the fans still in line, and a bit (okay, maybe a lot) of arousal at Alexander defending you.
âPrats,â he cursed bitterly as the door closed behind you, leaving the two of you alone in the corridor. He turned to you. âAre you alright?â
âYeah, Iâm fine,â you replied awkwardly, not really sure if you were being honest. âThanks for, um, rescuing me.â
Alexander pursed his lips, his nostrils flaring as he shot a dark look back at the door.
âYou got anything else on this afternoon?â he asked you.
âNo, that was my last thing.â
âDo you want to go back to my room and raid the minibar? I usually get pissed on the agencyâs credit card alone, but I guess you wouldnât be the worst company.â
âThat almost sounded like a compliment.â
âMake the most of it. Come on, I know a way upstairs we can go to avoid being seen.â
Alexander led you up to the floor you were all staying on, and you were halfway down the corridor to his room when your path was suddenly intercepted by Jane Doe, one of the new cast members for the reboot.
âHello!â she announced cheerily, grinning at you both.
âLal - er, Jane, what are you doing here?â Alexander said with confusion. âI thought you couldnât make it this weekend.â
âIt is my birthing day! We are having a party. You are coming too.â
Alexander glanced at you. âOh - er - weâll miss this one, actually. But happy⊠birthing day.â
He tried to step around her, but she simply followed his path, still grinning.
Apparently she was as strange as her character.
âYou are coming!â Jane insisted.
She held something up in her hand and pressed a button, and your world went black.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW | Spencer Reid x Sunshine!Reader
Description: Sunshine rookie gets a boyfriend, and Spencer canât help but thing he would be so much better for her. But that definitely isnât the jealousy talking, right?
Length: 8k
Warnings: nothing really, jealousy? talks of sex? embarrassment? Mention briefly of vomit because of allergic reaction.
main masterlist.
authorâs note: I want to write for these two until my fingers are two little stubs and even then Iâll learn with my toes. Can be read as a stand alone!
He thought he was going to be sick when he saw her that random Thursday, leaning against her desk, a sweet, bashful smile on her face. Or, more specifically, Spencer thought he was going to need to at least sit down when he saw the man standing next to her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, the little daisy earrings Penelope bought her for her birthday almost laughing at his gobsmacked expression.Â
He liked Agent Taylor Bingley. He respected the fresh faced desk jockey from the third floor that swanned around their bullpen, usually discussing warm up routines with Luke. He was quick on his feet, a pretty decent shot. Never missed a report, never tardy, even offered his parking spot up to Spencer on more than one occasion because he didnât mind the long walk from the other lot. He flew under the radar, and when he was noticed, it was because he was a particularly kind soul.Â
Spencer didnât think heâd ever seen him without those rosy cheeks that made him look almost always sunburnt, or that trademark boyish grin a handsome guy like him had down to a tea. So it really shouldnât have been such a surprise to see him lingering around his sunshine girl.Â
Except she wasnât his, not by a mile. They just spent almost every second of the work day together.
âCheck it out, rookie has an admirer,â Tara said, the heels clicking against the floor as she passed the door, where Spencer seemed to have stopped, his eyes narrowing at the happy couple, âCanât say I blame him. Sheâs a pretty girl, donât you think, Spence?â
She didnât realise she was rubbing salt in a superficial wound, but Spencer felt his jaw feather with annoyance. Because she was beyond a pretty girl, she was honey and all the months of Spring and a hot drink on a rainy day and finishing a good book and the dessert your mom let you have on your tenth birthday. Not that he could admit that. So he just nodded, right as Taylor leaned over to kiss the apple of her cheek.Â
She shied away, smiling to her lap and playing with her fingertips, not looking up from her little potted plant that sat next to her on her desk, and Spencer knew it was because she floundered when people gave her too much attention.
Like when Garcia had said her blouse and bun combo sheâd worn the other day made her look like a sexy teaching assistant, sheâd stammered something close to a thankyou and headed to the kitchenette to get herself a glass of water. Or when Rossi had said the bangs she had cut herself two weeks ago looked cute, that his daughter had been desperate to try something similar, sheâd spilled her coffee down her front not even two seconds later because she had been so occupied telling the man it was no big deal.Â
âMorning, Doctor Reid, Doctor Lewis,â Taylor said, his pearly white teeth gleaming with that West Coast, surfer boy tan that made Spencer want to huff. The man was insufferable. Well, correction, he was insufferably nice for someone Spencer was desperate to pick apart with faults the second heâd seen her preening over their sunshine rookie.Â
âMorning, Agent Bingley,â Tara said civilly, smiling back at the Agent that passed them to head to the elevators. She caught a glimpse of Spencer, and was quick to make herself scarce in the interest of needing to check in with Penelope, because she knew what that stormy look in his eye and the way his lips pressed into a thin line meant, profiler or not.Â
Spencer didnât pay much attention to Lewis leaving his side, not that he was trying to be rude, his eyes were zeroed in on the way she fumbled around her desk, looking for imaginary mess to tidy, which included rearranging the pots of glitter pens and highlighters next to her monitor, only to put them back exactly how they were before.Â
âAgent Bingley, thatâs new,â Came a voice over her shoulder, that made her jump in her seat, and her expression was skittish when she swivelled around, Spencer towering over her with calculating eyes. Luke rolled his chair around the divider to lean in on the conversation, having witnessed the whole thing in high definition since her desk was right next to his.Â
âOh, Taylor?â She squeaked, and Spencer didnât need to touch her face to know it had gone hot just by the way she simpered and fiddled with the hem of her knee length skirt, avoiding their gaze, âYeah, he took me to the aquarium at the weekend and we got lunch. Itâs not really serious or anything, I donât think,âÂ
She seemed unsure, her lips pursed together and a tiny crease between her brow he hated, and it was then Lukeâs deep laugh rumbled next to them.Â
âDoes he know that?â Luke asked, and she shot him a look, wide eyed and confused, as he cleared his throat, âI was thinking I could take you out again in that pretty red dress-â
She threw a wad of scrunched up notepaper at him, an embarrassed smile on her face as she shook her head at him, âYou have spent way too much time with Penelope, youâre turning into gossiping school children,âÂ
But she seemed happy, like the thought of the conversation sheâd had with Agent Bingley made her all the more girlish herself as she giggled lightly, her gaze meeting Spencerâs empty expression. He wished he could hide his jealousy better, perhaps even seem happy for her. She deserved someone soft and saccharine and humane like Bingley, not a rough shell of what once was a brilliant man. He knew he should feel somewhat pleased for her, at least now he had empirical, hard evidence on why he couldnât have her, but he couldnât.Â
âAll Iâm saying, rookie, is if you got that man bringing you breakfast and sweet talking you after one date, youâll have him wrapped around your pinky by the time heâs your boyfriend,â Luke chuckled, and Spencer thought he might just burst a vessel with how hard he clenched his jaw at that dreaded b word.Â
Alvez had no idea just how much he had twisted a knife in Spencerâs gut, which was plunged even further when he saw that sparkle in her eye when she looked up at him.Â
âIgnore him, heâs a busy body,â She chirped, her teeth peeking from her lips when she hid a grin, âYou wanna get coffee later? Taylor brought me tea and Iâm dying for the good stuff,âÂ
Spencer nodded with a small smile, because her attitude was infectious, and selfishly thinking that Bingley couldnât be that perfect for her because she only ever wanted tea when she felt sick, usually towards the start of the month that he guessed was in correlation with her menstrual cycle but would never ask. She wouldnât want tea for another two weeks, and would likely take an extra shot in her cappuccino today because this was when she felt the most lethargic. Â
Swivelling back around in her chair to log onto her computer, she remained completely oblivious to his inner turmoil.Â
For once, Spencer wished heâd been late to work.
â
Two months. They had been dating for two fucking months. As far as Spencer could tell, from Penelopeâs need to chatter about their sunshine rookie and her hot, stud muffin of a boyfriend, things had only been official for about five weeks of that time, but it hadnât stopped Spencer from wanting to swallow glass because that would likely be less inconvenient than seeing the two of them together.Â
Taylor usually brought her breakfast whenever they would get back from a case, which infuriated Spencer because he always bought her tea. She was a people pleaser, Spencer knew it before he had ever thought of her as anything other than the shiny newbie with too much joy and doe eyes heâd never seen before. But now, knowing her better than anyone else in the office did because she practically shadowed his footsteps, it was blaringly obvious to him that she had either never told him she didnât like tea first thing in the morning, or he had never bothered to take notice.Â
Spencer felt an odd puddle of smugness and fury when on more than one occasion he saw her pouring it down the drain, cold after sitting there for hours until it was unbearable and she couldnât force herself to drink anymore. It was obvious to him, so why wasnât it obvious to her own boyfriend? Spencer thought bitterly. But then Agent Bingley did leave a sour taste in his mouth these days.
Speaking of which, Spencer felt that pang in his chest the way he always did when the happy couple walked into the office together. Her hand was usually in his, though she seemed to simper under the weight of the team's glances; knowing and teasing as heâd take her to her desk and whip out the to-go pastries that heâd bought them that morning.Â
âMorning, Spence,â She skipped past his desk, Taylor trailing behind her like a dog, though she seemed not to mind keeping him waiting a moment as she spoke to her friend, âHow was Doctor Who?â
He smiled despite his grudge, because she always remembered what he said. Heâd told her once that Thursdays were his evening to watch the show, and every time Friday morning rolled around, sheâd bound up to lean over his computer and ask.Â
âIt was okay, Iâm excited to see what they do with a Female Doctor, even if Iâll miss Capaldi,â He replied earnestly, and her eyes filled with glee.Â
âDid they give her a new one of the doo-hickies they have?â She asked, his chest butterflying with an aching sort of affection because she seemed to remember everything he ever told her.Â
âSonic Screwdriver?â She nodded her head, even though Spencer knew she didnât quite understand the show entirely, âYeah, I prefer Sarah Janeâs Sonic Lipstick however,âÂ
âI wish I had one of those, I could reapply and save the world, how cool would that be?â She said, and they laughed together a little, before Taylor popped his head over Spencerâs computer with that dentist white beam and his excitable eyes, bluer than any sea rolling onto shore.Â
âMorning, Doctor Reid,â Agent Bingley said, and the smile withered from Spencerâs face, morphing into a civil nod, his expression unreadable.Â
âMorning, Agent,â He said, his eyes tracking back to his screen as he suddenly found Emilyâs group email about staff room fridge etiquette invigorating.Â
Taylor must have taken it as a sign the Doctor Reid was busy and finally let him have a minutes peace, that is until she took a seat at her desk and he leaned next to her, handing her a warm bagel.Â
Spencer heard them chatting for about ten minutes, of which he was trying anything to tune them out, including roping Luke into their own conversation. It wasnât until there was a lapse in the chatter that Spencerâs ears pricked up, and he heard her stand up from her desk, eyes wide as she spat a mouthful out into a tissue.Â
âDoes this have coconut in it?â She asked somewhat fearfully, Spencerâs head whipping around to her little corner of the bullpen. Her little self help stickers dotted around her desktop stared back at him, her reminder to âdrink waterâ almost horribly ironic the second heâd heard her question.Â
His stomach dropped when Taylor frowned, âYeah, itâs coconut and raspberry, is-is that not okay?âÂ
Spencer was quick to stand up out of his own seat, rifling through his satchel to dig out his water bottle, making it to her desk in just two long paces and handing it to her without another word as she looked up at him worriedly.Â
âIf you need to puke, itâll probably be for the best so that you can get the traces out of your stomach. You canât have the steroids before you hurl or it wonât work,â He soothed, and she nodded, sipping on his water with shaky hands, and Spencer was quick to catch the way her skin had a slight sheen to it that hadnât been there before. He put a hand on her shoulder, trying to gage if she was well enough to make it to the bathroom on her own or if he would need to drive her to the ER. Either way her expression worried him.Â
âI-I thought it was white chocolate,â She peeped, looking extremely sorry for herself as she dumped the chewed up brownie in her bin, and Taylor almost appeared at her side, looking entirely lost as he stroked a hand down her hair.Â
âTalk to me, whatâs wrong?â He asked, seafoam hues trailing down her sweating face in terror.Â
âSheâs allergic to coconut,â Spencer cut in, his tone a little harsher than needed, and her boyfriendâs expression wilted like a kicked puppy.Â
âShit! You never mentioned, Iâm so- Iâm so sorry, honey,â Taylor went pale, and she didnât look much better as she pushed past the two of them, heading for the bathroom, Spencer a single pace behind her.Â
âI got her, donât worry,â He called over his shoulder to Agent Bingley standing there like a gaping fish, his hand running through his blonde sweep as he watched her all but running out of the office, Spencerâs long legs keeping up with her.Â
âIs your skin getting prickly yet?â Spencer asked. Swouldn't go into anaphylaxis, at least not as far as they knew, but the large hives that would appear on her chest and neck and the vomiting was not ideal. She kept a tray of steroids in her desk incase an accidental cross contamination happened (and because Spencer had forced her to have some on hand), but seeing her panicked eyes as she tasted the chalky fruit had made him fawn over her like she was marked for the plague.Â
âNeck is getting itchy,â She replied, tugging at her collar and pushing the door to the unisex bathrooms open, heading for the nearest stall, âYou donât have to stay for this bit, itâs not-â
He cut her off by sweeping her hair into a ponytail, as if to tell her to stop worrying about him, and he stroked a hand over her arm to let her know he was right there, because he knew she really hated anything gory and gross like that.Â
He hushed her when sheâd try to apologise, hand her his bottle of water in between moments where her whole body seized.
And for a minute, she thought that Spencer might be the only person who sheâd ever let see her like this. Not Luke, or Garcia and certainly not Taylor.Â
The thought of it kept her quiet for the rest of the morning.Â
-
They seemed to move past the whole debacle quickly. Luke said Taylor had taken her to a fancy restaurant uptown to apologise, making a huge point to avoid the coconut banoffee pudding like it was an explosive.Â
âYou guys are so cute, youâre like Jane and heâs literally your Bingley. I swear your kids are going to be sweet enough I could drizzle them right next to ice cream,â Penelope said over the SUV console speaker, Spencer in the driving seat and her in the passenger, flicking through her files as they approached the victimâs house.Â
The rookie blanched, âWoah, woah, kids?â She protested, and even Spencer felt himself nearly swerve the minute the bubbly IT geek said it. She looked shaken, awkwardly chuckling and reaching to tuck hair behind her ear, âSlow down, Garcia, weâve not even- you know what, I think weâre talking about the wrong thing here-âÂ
âYouâve not even what?â Penelope burst out, her need for the lastest gossip overwhelming the reading of the room. She swallowed heavily, shifting in her seat to face out of the window, her knees touching the door with a thud, âHave you guys not had sex yet?âÂ
âPenelope!â The woman screeched, her face hot and gobsmacked that sheâd even said it out loud.Â
But it was telling enough, and Spencerâs face whirled over the console to her, guilt written on her features.Â
âI just assumed you guys had done it seeing as both of you are the hottest couple I know, I mean I wouldnât be able to keep my hands off you if I was a guy-â Penelope tried to save herself in the only way she knew how, by digging herself a deeper hole.Â
Spencerâs hand shot out for the centre screen, âWeâre losing you, Garcia, youâre breaking up, bye,â He pressed the end call button, and he didnât need to look at the girlâs face to know she was the epitome of mortified.Â
Spencer opened his mouth to say something, the awkward silence of the car killing him as much as he knew it was her, but he thought better of it and clamped his mouth shut. It took him a minute before he opened his mouth to speak again, if not to ask her if she wanted to stop at a drive thru for breakfast, but she beat him to it.Â
âI was going to say weâve not even said I love you yet,â She murmured, keeping her body entirely swivelled away from him, her arms crossed over her chest in an attempt to make herself smaller, as if she could just smush herself into the seat so he wouldnât say anything. She cleared her throat, scratching her wrist nervously, âBut I guess thatâs also true too,âÂ
âWhy not?â Her eyes snapped onto Spencer when he braved those two words, and he sensed heâd overstepped some sort of boundary before he realised it sounded like heâd been speaking about the latter, âWhy havenât you said it?â He clarified.Â
She went quiet, her shoulders shrugging being the only sign that sheâd heard him, gaze trailing back out her window.Â
âHeâs not said it yet either, and I donât think I want him to. Not yet at least,â Her voice was soft, heavy as if every single one of them was coming from her heart, âLove is such a big emotion I think if he did say it, I wouldnât know how to respond. Like, if Iâm going to say it back to someone, I want to be sure I feel it otherwise itâs like Iâm betraying everyone elseâs version of love, you know?âÂ
He thought she might just be an angel bottled up and thrown into his life, and he sometimes wished he could take a look inside that head of hers because how she had protected her beautiful look on the world after seeing so much hurt staggered him. He had become cruel and cold and heavy where she looked at the lecherous shithole heading for disaster they called Earth and saw right to its soul, gave it a hug, told it she would care even when no one else would.Â
He tore his eyes from the road, and took in the outline of her face, mindlessly watching the pedestrians on their daily commute to grab lunch, a dog peeing against a lamp post, a motorcyclist bobbing and weaving in between the midday traffic, her doe eyes never missing a trick.
Forcing his gaping expression back on the road, because he might just swerve and hit the damn rider off his bike if he let himself get lost in his little dreamscape that consisted of nothing but her and her face and her thoughts and her words, he cleared his throat, not sure how to add to the poetic, rose tint she seemed to see the world in.
âThatâs good, that youâre taking things at your own pace, atleast,â He said, not particularly profound but at least it was something, âYou shouldnât do things just because someone else wants you to, even if you think it would make them happy,â
âBut I like making people happy,â She countered, her expression troubled as she looked over at him with a quirked brow, âI like making you happy especially,â
âWhat makes you think Iâm not happy?â Spencer asked, his mouth drying up, his stomach flipping in cartwheels when she giggled to herself like for once she was the smart one snd he was the one who needed teaching.
âIt took you three and a half weeks to crack a smile when we first started working together,â His jaw clenched, because he was the one who counted the statistics. Perhaps he was rubbing off on her. âHonestly, I thought you hated me. I thought a seasoned agent like yourself probably would get frustrated teaching the dumb newbie the ABCâs, even ones that admire him. But then I thought, instead of getting so butt hurt about it all, I could just give you a reason to smile and youâd see that Iâm not just a useless rookie learning to roll over for treats.â
Spencerâs throat bobbed. Heâd hate himself forever for being so cruel to her those first few weeks, the clipped tones when sheâd add something in a particularly chirpy voice, the way he would forget his manners sometimes when sheâd bring him a coffee, because his head had been so deep in survival mode that being nice didnât matter. Being nice had got him nowhere in Mexico, in fact it had shown his soft underbelly and drawn a target on it.Â
âI never hated you,â His voice croaked out, weak and pathetic, and it's times like that he remembered ten years ago talking to her would have made him blush, pop a boner, and lose half his IQ all in one go. Coughing, his knuckles turned white at the wheel, and he avoids her gaze that feels like a pitfall trap, âItâs difficult to go back to how you used to be when youâve got a thousand eyes on your back waiting for you to lower your guard,â
âI know, I know that now, I jus-â She floundered, worried sheâd touched a nerve, but he stopped her by leaning over the console and putting a gentle hand on her kneecap.
âRelax, I know I wasnât the most pleasant person to be around,â Spencer said, his timbre quiet but honest, âYou were one of the few things I looked forward to, if Iâm honest.â
âReally?â She said, agog, like she was waiting for him to turn around and say it had been a joke, âYou didnât think Iâm too loud or, like, too much?â
âHow can there be too much of you? If your body wasnât in correct proportion, your organs wouldn't function-â
âSpencer,â She said, though he knew she was smiling even without having to look, âYou know thatâs not what I meant,â
âI know,â He replied, a smug little smile quirking on his own lips because he loved making her happy too, âNo, I could never find you too much.â
She simpered under his words, his hand a stoked flame on her skin as she brought her fingers over the top of them to squeeze them together, before she changed the subject because she knew her cheeks might just explode if they heated anymore.
â
They were back from a long case, one that had made everyone tired and grumpy, especially because they needed to swing by the office for an hour of admin even Emily couldnât wriggle them out of.Â
And ofcourse, as he always was when Spencer was feeling like he was already about to strangle someone out of annoyance, Agent Bingley was right there when they entered the lobby.
She hadnât slept well on the jet, despite Spence loaning her his jumper to use as a pillow, and she was in desperate need of coffee, the kind that Spencer and Penelope forced her to try instead of the cold caramel thing she liked. Sheâd even go for one of Lukeâs zero sugar, zero milk atrocities right now.
âHey guys, how was the flight?â Taylor jumped in to ask, and everyone gave some sort of variation of a groan because that was exactly how it had felt. His attention turned to her, as she pulled up the rear with Spencer attached her her hip because she had been practically sleepwalking the entire way there, âHi honey,â
âTaylor, hi,â She said, her eyes perking up when he held out a hot take away cup for her, âYou really didnât have to,â
âNonsense, herbal tea is supposed to alleviate headaches and help get you to sleep,â He replied, his other hand behind his back quickly whipping out to produce a bunch of flowers in front of her face.
She barely had time to flash him a grin to hide the disappointment that it was nowhere near as caffeinated as sheâd like, nor that she didnât even liked herbal tea, before a bunch of lilies were thrust her way.
âLillies,â She said, her hand covering her chest at the touching sentiment, âTaylor, you shouldnât have,â
âI know theyâre your favourites,â The blonde replied, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and effectively putting a wall between her and Spencer, whether he meant to or not. Her expression wavered, and Spencer's eyes went straight to her, waiting for her to correct him. Because they werenât her favourites, not even in her top five. Hyacinths were. Or Foxglove. Or Delphiniums. Not Lillies.Â
She nodded wordlessly, and the three of them headed for the lift, where the rest of the team held the door for them, her expression tiptoeing between guilty and smiling, Taylorâs almost ecstatic to see her after her long few days away, and Spencerâs entirely pissed off that the sun kissed jerk couldnât see every sign blaring in his face.Â
âI might have to cut off the stamen when Ace comes over,â She queried, her eyes roving over the beautiful white petals opening towards her like a book.
âAce? Whoâs Ace?â He said, and Spencer and JJ exchanged a glance, because the whole elevator was now privy to their conversation as David pressed the six button. Taylor reached forward to push the three for himself.
âThe dog I foster sometimes, the one I told you about. He helps me when I need to talk through some things. Heâs a very good listener,,â She said with a dopey smile on her face, her eyes casting over her boyfriends face with a willing expression, because she knew for a fact sheâd told him at lengths about the bouncy Spaniel that adored her, âHe comes over for playdates, but the pollen inside lilies are poisonous to dogs,â
Taylor scrunched his nose up, âUgh, I hate dogs, theyâre so slobbery and the always seem to smell awful,â He commented, her face dropping the slightest in a way that made Spencerâs hand curl into a fist, because how dare Agent Bingley take that away from her, âI thought you were a cat person?â
âI like them both equally, but Ace is sweet. He curls up on my legs after weâve gone for a walk,â Taylor still didnât seem convinced, and she felt stupid for even mentioning it, well aware that the rest of her team were listening in on her childish description of the old dog that wanted nothing but love.Â
âWhy do you need a dog to talk anyway, babe? You have me,â Taylor said, in a way that was supposed to sound comforting but made Spencer want to shake him and tell him to listen to a damn word she was saying. Her eyes dimmed, and she looked at the lilies again, feeling entirely ungrateful for wishing they were something else, and the elevator doors opened onto the third floor. Taylor kissed her cheek and waltzed out of the lift with a quick goodbye to her team that was returned in murmurs. Turning to look at her, his body already in the anteroom of his own floor, he smiled sweetly at her, âI love you,â
JJ and Emily whipped their heads to her face, expecting to see some kind of puppy love blossom there, only to find wide-eyed panic, her smile slowly slipping. Rossi cleared his throat when she said nothing, the air turning stale as the team waited for her response, Taylor looking at her expectantly, and she wished the ground would open up then and there to swallow her whole, because that would probably be better than whatever this was.
Tara nudged her shoulder, waking her out of her daze, Luke scratching the back of his neck awkwardly, and it was then after a beat more of silence that Taylor opened his mouth again, âBabe, did you hear what I-â
She leaned forward to press the close door button, her doe hues in full flight mode, her fingers only picking up the pace when her boyfriend took a step closer towards the elevator, and Emily brought a hand over her mouth in muffled laughter when the doors slammed shut in front of him, their sunshine rookie entirely spooked and needing a quick exit.
The tiny metal box went silent, Spencer watching her face meld from alarm to horror, to sheer embarrassment.
âI mean, Iâll give it to you kid, thatâs one way to do it,â Rossi said, patting her on the back and she shoved her face in her hands, the stems of the dove white flowers brushing against her cheek roughly.
âPlease tell me that didnât just happen,â She groaned through her fingers, JJ chuckling as the doors to their own floor opened up.
âOh honey,â She said, rubbing the girlâs back gently, leading her out onto the BAU carpet that felt harsher against the souls of her shoes than it ever had before, âI think what you need is a coffee and a long talk with someone who isnât a dog,â
Spencer watched her shuffle to slump down behind her desk, her expression still rattled and lost, JJâs eyes flicking to him every now and then in a way that urged him to be the one to do just that because it was obvious by now who she talked the most openly to in the office.
But by the time heâd braved walking over to her desk, sheâd already rushed through her report, excusing herself home for the day, and he knew her well enough to know she needed some breathing room before he could approach the subject, otherwise she would shut the doors on him too.
He hated the spiteful part of him that revelled in Taylorâs expression when that metal screen had slammed in his face.
â
It was three days later, and she had enforced a strict ban on talking about that day in the office. For once she didnât look like she was going to break her resolve either, since every time someone tried to weasel information of her she would either pretend she hadnât heard, or would excuse herself to make her fifth coffee of the day, or even had thrown her paperwork on the floor when Luke had pushed her for an answer just for an excuse to avoid the topic.
In fact, Spencer himself had been tempted to get her alone because he knew she would crack without much pressure from him, though the thought of using her trusting nature against her seemed wicked, and so he stopped himself and settled for curiosity.
It wasnât until they were away on a case and they were shoved in a room together that the subject of Taylor was even brought up, and even then it was entirely out of his control.
âIâll take the couch,â Spencer said, his eyes falling on the double bed in the centre of the room, striding over the other side of the room to throw his to go bag down on the two seater sofa that would wreck his back.
âDonât be silly, we can just share the bed.â She said, as if it was the most obvious solution, which it was, âI sleep talk a little, but just give me a shove and Iâll shut up,âÂ
Spencer paused, watching her fumbling around her bag for her toothbrush and paste.
âWonât your boyfriend mind?â He asked, his palms clammy because he worried for a moment it was wrong to bring it up, and his chest butterflied when she froze, âSorry, I know you didnât want to talk about it, I just thought I wouldnât like my girlfriend sharing a bed-â
âWe broke up,â She said, taking pulling a large pink shirt out her bag and some strawberry printed shorts, her toiletries stuffed in her pockets, âSo donât worry about any of that stuff, we can share,â
And she waltzed into the bathroom without any more explanation, the lock clicking behind her and leaving Spencer alone with his thoughts.
They had broken up? Was it because of what happened in the elevator? Was it because of what Penelope said in the car? Was she the one to break up with him or the other way around?
Spencer felt like a gossip, even though his thoughts had gone no further than his cranium, and by the time she emerged from the bathroom, fresh faced and in her pyjamas, he had already changed himself, tucked himself under the cover in the hope she understood they didnât need to talk about it if she didnât want to.
She smiled at him, tucking her dirty clothes back in her bag and heading for the bed, slipping under the plush duvet with a soft ooft.Â
âLight on or off?â She asked, her finger hovering over the switch beside their bed.
âOn, if thatâs okay?â He replied and she nodded wordlessly, shuffling down under the covers, pulling them up to just below her armpits. Crossing her arms over her stomach like she was snow white waiting to fall into a poison-laced slumber, her eyes bore holes into the ceiling, and his thoughts banged loudly against his temple. The silence of the room seemed to only turn their avoidance tactics into a cacophony they couldnât ignore.
âIf youâre going to ask questions, I might as well tell you before we get back to Quantico.â She said finally, her sigh heavy and exhausted and she looked over at him, his brunette locks splaying over the pillow in waves, his facial hair scratching against the sheet when he flicked his head over to her too.Â
Hazel had never been such a pretty colour than when they sat in silence for a moment, staring at one another, almost daring the other to speak first. He swallowed, his mouth watering at how she looked, tucked under the sheets, her body lax and soft under her pyjamas, her hands skimming over her stomach nervously.
âIs it because of the day in the elevator?â Spencer asked after a few minutes, breaths suddenly becoming difficult to regulate naturally unless he forced them to be, because he was so close to her under the covers, his entire body too long and gangly for just a twin bed, he could smell her shampoo and conditioning combo in full force. Her spearmint tongue rolled words around her mouth for a minute, dropping down to his Star Wars shirt he felt childish for wearing the minute he saw her looking at it.
âKind of, he just wanted us to move so fast, it just kinda made me nervous, but I always thought being nervous was supposed to be good, you know?â She sighed, forgetting to breathe in between her splurge of words that had been building up inside her for weeks, âLike you said the feeling of excitement and fear are almost identical so I think I just convinced myself I was being dumb and I was being a bad person for not just giving him what he wanted. Iâm supposed to love him, right? Being his girlfriend and all that,â
He had said that; because scientifically that was exactly correct. The hormones released during love and during fear were, down to their core, chemical matches, and it felt funny sheâd remembered that fact considering she made him feel somewhere in between too. He knew she was special, just as much as he knew the idea of tainting her with his core terrified him. Like he secreted some kind of radiation that would ruin her if she got too close for too long. But he couldnât help it. How do you stop yourself from wanting something good? It was just science. A Pavlovian response.Â
âYouâre not supposed to do anything. Thereâs no timeline for how you feel, and you canât force yourself to feel something any quicker or stronger than you do,â He said, shaking his head when she bit her lip, her fingertips playing with one another ontop of the sheets.
âHe wanted to know when I was ready to haveâŠâ She swallowed, her cheeks heating, âIntimacy with him. A-and itâs not like Iâve not done it before, I had a boyfriend in high school, but I just felt like with himâŠâ
âHe didnât pressure you, did he?â Spencer asked, his brows furrowing as he felt a surge of annoyance flash through his blood that she had wound herself up so much just because of some guy who couldnât keep it in his pants for a few months.Â
Her eyes widened, taking in the storm brewing in that beautiful woodland gaze of his, and she shook her head quickly, âNo, no, nothing like that. This was all on me, it was all just me being dumb,â
âYouâre not being dumb just because some guy didnât like the answer you gave,â He corrected, exhaling deeply and letting his frown drop, because he knew she hated when he did that, âWhy didnât you want to, if you donât mind me asking?â
She shrugged, looking back up at the dusty lamp shade hanging from the ceiling, the cobwebs that smattered around the wooden panels.
âI donât know, I just kind of never saw the two of us.. becoming intimate, you know?â She said, her tone sheepish like she was in confession and he was a priest sat on the other side of the divide. He looked over at her, scanning the outline of her face, but she seemed adamant on avoiding his gaze, because she knew she would spill everything the minute she looked at him. With Spencer, there were no secrets, and that was entirely the problem.Â
Spencerâs lips pursed, thinking of exactly the right thing to say to such a delicate soul when she was laying herself hypothetically bare for him.Â
âYou donât have to be intimate in a relationship if you donât want to. No one who loves you should ever make you feel like thereâs an expectation or like you owe them that,â Spencer explained softly, edging his pinky finger out the tiniest bit to catch the back of her hand that now lay flat on the bed, her head turning up to meet his round forest hues that looked down at her with more softness than heâd felt in a long time.Â
He wished he could stay here with her forever. In the quiet of this room, they were just the two of them, not Doctor Reid and the Special Agent he had a huge hopeless crush on that was years his junior and thought she could fix everything wrong with the world.Â
âI know,â She sighs, and his heart caught in his throat when her pinky raises up to meet his own, the tips of their fingers brushing against one another like they were meeting each other for a slow dance. He had touched her many times before, but there was something illicit about this time. Like their skin had become oppositely charged and was pulling the other one in with an electric crackle, âHe never pressured me but I felt like I could have tried harder to want it.â
âIf you donât want it, you donât ever have to have it. A lot of people reach your age when your frontal cortex is developed and realise they might be asexual, itâs not a bad thing-â He tried reassuring her, but she was quick to shake her head again, bashfully ripping her eyes away from him to look at their caressing fingertips.Â
âNo, no. Itâs not that I never want to be intimate ever, I just never really felt comfortable around him enough to let myself want it. Like I couldnât just be me with him, I was just being what he wanted me to be. Like he never really knew the real me,â She explained, and she rolled over onto her side to face him, her other finger coming up to absentmindedly trace over the prominent vein that ran up his arm, stopping just below where his old needle scars were at the crook of his elbow. If she saw them, she didnât say a word, but Spencer felt like she was trailing a flame over his skin. He thought if she took his manhood in her hand sheâd probably get the exact same response from him, because with every invisible swirl and line she drew over his skin, he felt a heat ripping through his loins. âDoes that make sense? Like I didnât think he would like the ikky parts of me so I ended up putting on a charade,âÂ
âY-yeah,â He replied, and his stammer made her look up, eyes wide and innocent as she watched him all but falling apart under a single fingertip. God he was pathetic. Mid thirties and nearly finishing in his boxers over a pretty girl touching his arm. Only it wasnât just a pretty girl. It was her. His sunshine girl. âBut I donât think you have any ikky parts, to be honest,â
Her eyes deepened into pools of awe, and he watched her trail a glance down his nose to his mouth vulnerably.
âSpencer, youâre being too kind,â She whispered, and he swore his chest lurched.
He cleared his throat, and moved to roll over towards her too, hoping to disperse some of the energy that was clogging between them, only for it to become dialled to a hundred, trapping them in a tiny box where they were looking at one another, laying on the bed they were being forced to share and almost holding hands, because committing to full thing was scary like they were ten years old in a playground.Â
âOf course that makes sense. Itâs much healthier to form intimate relationships with people we trust and feel safe with than rushing into things,â Spencer tried to breeze past the tension, but her breath was fanning over his face, almost tripping him over his words, because she was still looking at him like he knew all the answers. Because he usually did. Except for this time. This time, he felt like he was walking blind towards his point, âNot that one night stands should be shamed or anything, but itâs much better to engage in sexual intercourse with someone when it feels right,â
She breathed out deeply, licking her lips, and her finger movements stopped.Â
âSo itâs just a when you know, you know, kind of thing?â She asked, her brows pulling together in a saddened frown, âIâm not, like, broken or anything?âÂ
He sat up on his elbow, grabbing her wrist tight enough she would listen the minute he said it to her, because he never wanted to hear her say that again, âThere is nothing wrong with you, you hear me?â She looked up at him with glassy eyes, wide and shocked to see him so desperately insistent over her, âYou feeling secure is more important than any guy out there, no matter how nice they are, got it?âÂ
She nodded after a beat, because she thought her brain might have stopped working with the way he was leaned over her, looking down at her with a glimmer of the harshness heâd been drowning in when she first met him. These days he seemed to have mellowed out the tiniest bit, except the straightforward tone he held with everyone else who wasnât her, or the general heavy handedness he didnât seem to realise he was capable of. Like in the way his warm, rough hands gripped the skin of her wrist, his expression somewhat frustrated though not with her as he looked down at where she was half beneath him.
âSpence?â She whispered into the electricity between them, her eyes trailing over his nose again and ghosting over his half attempt at facial hair. They were just whisps, but they suited him embarrassingly well. He didnât reply, just stared at her to wait for her response, âI feel safe with you, you know that?âÂ
He swore his heart was thumping out of his chest. She looked divine under his hand, sweet like a pudding begging him to taste, and he couldnât help it when his thumb trailed up the side of her jaw, brushing just under her bottom lip, and she seemed to press herself further into his touch, a cat being scratched behind velvet ears.
âYouâd tell me if you ever wanted me to stop, wouldnât you?â He murmured, gooseflesh crawling up his arm when she nodded, her eyes boring holes into his soul when she looked up at him like that. Â
âAlways,â She answered honestly, blinking at him once, twice, before she took a deep breath for courage, âBut what if I never wanted you to stop?â
Spencer nearly moaned when he crashed their lips together, and he heard her squeak in delight beneath him, his large hand cupping her jaw, weaving into her hair, tugging her closer. She felt like her was consuming her whole, and she had no qualms about it, not when she reached a hand up to his shoulder and tugged him even more on top of her, the weight of him on her chest comforting and achingly right.Â
He pulled away to breathe for a moment, but she was chasing his lips, her touch maddening and he swore his brain switched off when she ran a hand up his spine, slipping under his shirt and tracing over every one of his vertebrae making him shiver. Her lips were stronger than any craving he had ever felt, the instant dopamine rush embarrassing for a man of his age, so hardened by the world reduced to putty, ready to beg for more because now heâd had a taste of her ambrosia, he didnât think he could ever think straight again. A man sent crazy by forbidden wine.
He pushed her hair away from her face, using his long fingers to wrap around the back of her head and pull her impossibly closer to him, his other arm skirting down to her clothed waist and pressing their bodies together. She whined in his mouth, and Spencer thought he could finally die happy.
He pulled away to let her catch a gasp, her fingers carding through his long, brown curls, scratching against his scalp in a way that drew a low growl from his throat. He needed more, needed her, more than the air he gulped down ravenously and he found himself kissing at her soft neck, her head tipped back in bliss as he kissed every inch he could.
âThe reason I didnât want it with Taylor,â She choked between manic breaths, her hands holding onto him so tight he knew she didnât have any intention of asking him to stop, âWas because it didnât feel like this,â
Spencer wove their fingers together, pushing her hand above her head as the other came up to tilt her face towards him, looking into her bleary eyes for a second, their noses ghosting past one another, her mint breath delicious on his lips.
âIt never feels like this, baby,â He whispered, their foreheads pressing together before he gave into her again and pressed his lips against hers so hard she whimpered into his mouth.
And she believed him.

Imagine going through relationship issues with Spencer and a scare at works sets you both back on the right path
This had been the eighth night in a row you'd slept alone. Opting to sleep in the spare bedroom of the place you and Spencer had bought together. Waking up hurt and sad with your partner was an exhausting way to live, and it was getting to you. The team had been back at the main office for the same amount of time. Having a big bust up on the aftermath of a case meant the journey back on the jet was awkward for everyone involved.
When he hadn't agreed with the way you dealt with the unsub, on top of you both disagreeing on when to start trying for a family. Had left you feeling put down and attacked both in work and in your personal life. Feeling like you couldn't do anything right, and that you were holding him back.
It was made worse by his lack of enthusiasm when you attempted to make amends. Wanting to talk about the issue, but finding it difficult when your boyfriend was a stubborn lump. Shrugging his shoulders and seeming totally disinterested.
After the fourth day of you trying to get through to him. You gave in. Telling yourself that if he wanted to make amends he would. Or he'd realise once it was too late.
Today though, you had a meeting with Garcia, she was going to show you an easier way of accessing some files. The way she does it. Getting yourself up and ready. The house sounded eerily quiet. Spencer did have a habit of impersonating the invisible man when he was home. But still, it was cold and felt empty.
Making your way downstairs, you called out for him, but got no answer.
Realising he wasn't even home. You felt another pang in your chest. Maybe he was done? The thought made your eyes sting. But on checking the time, you would be late to meet Garcia. You grabbed your breakfast out the fridge and grabbed your bag and keys.
Once in the office, you passed the bullring to see Spencer at his desk. Nose deep in some files.
"Hey, what time did you come in? We could have come together." You asked, approaching his desk.
"Early. Didn't want to wake you."
Nodding, you still wanted to push for you both to make up, "did you want to grab lunch somewhere? Would be nice to spend some time with you."
"I'm busy."
"Well I didn't mean right now. Later. When you're free? I'm in Garcias office if you-"
"Y/N, you're here!" Garcia squeaked, "for a moment I thought you were standing me up."
Realising he still wasn't ready to have a decent conversation with you. You gave up, again.
"Never." You smiled at her, before giving Spencer a sad look as he continued to read his papers.
You sat down in Garcias office and fully immersed yourself in the training. Pushing Spencer to the back of your mind.
Around lunchtime you saw Spencer walk past the room and you felt another wave of sadness wash over you.
"So, what's up with you and Sir Smarts-a-lot?" Garcia asked you while you were taking a break.
"There's not really much to tell. We fell out over some serious and not so serious things. I've tried to patch things up. He doesn't want to know. Been trying for like 4 days now."
"I'm sorry. He does seem particularly cranky since you came back from that last case."
"Yeah. Happened while we were out there. I don't even-"
You were interrupted by the sound of shouting from out in the main office. Both you and Garcia looked at each other and wondered who the hell fell out with each other so bad they had to have a screaming match.
Both getting up and wandering down the hall. You just about turned the corner first. But froze in your tracks seeing two people, one with a gun, the other with a briefcase. The woman, with the gun, had the few people that were in the bullring huddled together.
"Shit Garcia go back to your office and lock the door. Call Spence and tell him to stay away. Now!" You whisper shout at her.
"Hey! Put your hands on your head. Get in here Miss now." one of them shouted at you. Not having noticed Garcia as she backed away to her office.
When you didn't move. The seemingly unarmed intruder marched towards you and attempted to grab onto you. As you went to defend yourself. He pulled out a knife and threatened you with it.
"Think very carefully about what you do next." He said lowly.
"What do you guys want. I can help you."
"No you won't. You'll just try and talk me down and I won't let them down again. Get in here or I'm going to make you. And it will hurt."
"What's your name? I'm Y/N. Why are you here? There's no weapons or money stored here. Are you looking for someone?"
"Shut up!" He yelled, you let out a gasp at the sharp pain in your side.
Looking down the blade he was holding embedded in your side. Crumpling down to the floor, you watched as the deep red soaked into your blouse. Spreading across your side.
"What the fuck Darren. You weren't supposed to hurt anyone." A woman came up to the guy and yanked him by his shoulder. "We need to set these charges now and go. Now!"
Charges, that meant explosives.
The pair rushed off and left you bleeding on the floor. Giving you the opportunity to make an escape.
Making it back to Garcias office. You burst through the door, scaring the life out of her.
"Y/N! Oh my god why is there blood. There's a knife hanging out of you."
"Did you speak to Spence?" You asked locking the door behind you.
"Yeah he's in the armory now. They-"
"Call him back! Tell them to abort. Do not come up here!"
"OK, what-why?" She spluttered while calling him back.
"Garcia? Is everything okay. We're just planning how we're going to do this." He answered. You could hear the sound of kevlar being secured. You managed to stumble your way across the room to Garcias desk before your legs gave out.
"Spence, where are you? Do not come up here. And keep people out of the lifts. Do not use them." You panted.
"Y/N are you okay? We haven't left yet. What's going on?"
"I'm fine. I just met the intruders. They're setting charges. Evacuate the rest of the building."
"What? They're going to blow up the building?" Garcia asked, her face paling.
"How big are the explosives?"
"I didn't see. I just managed to get away from them. I did see it was only a small briefcase though."
"That could still be enough to wipe out the whole floor. You need to leave now. Use the far stairwell."
"Garcia, you should go."
"What? I'm not leaving you."
"Both of you go. Now!" Spencer raised his voice.
You shared a look with Garcia, knowing you weren't moving anywhere fast enough.
"We should be okay here," Garcia nodded, "I'll stay with her."
"You're hurt aren't you." Spencer spoke quietly.
"A little bit yeah. Spence, I love you."
"Don't do that. I'm coming to get you."
"No do-" and then the call rang off.
Garcia came and sat next to you. You rested your head on her shoulder.
"I don't get what they were talking about. They said about setting charges. But when the woman saw I'd been stabbed she said they weren't supposed to hurt anyone. How does that make sense." You mutter, starting to feel woozy from the blood loss.
"Unless what they're trying to destroy is paperwork not people," Garcia mused.
"Hotchs office, he keeps loads of important documents in there." You guessed.
"That makes sense. He always takes Sunday's off. So he wouldn't be in there to get hurt."
"Garcia you really should go. Maybe you can get some help." You said quietly. Feeling very lightheaded.
Garcias phone started ringing, answering it she put it on loudspeaker.
"Go ahead. We're just sitting here awaiting our handsome prince's to rescue us."
"Garcia." Spencer answered, "how badly is she hurt? They won't let us get in yet. Not if there's a bomb threat. The whole buildings on lock down. They aren't holding hostages. The other guys from the office have run out already. Are they still there?"
"Woah, woah, woah. One question at a time. Y/N isn't doing great. I don't know what to do Reid. I'm not a doctor. But she's still bleeding."
"What? What happened."
"She got stabbed by one of them. It's still in there but it's-"
"We have to get in there Y/Ns been stabbed. Please. I volunteer to go in. Come on Hotch." He sounded desperate, it made you smile slightly. The irony that it took a near death situation to get him to act like he cared again.
A deafening boom shook the office, jolting you awake.
"Shit was that the-?" You asked.
"I think so." Garcia nodded. "We're okay. Spencer can you hear me?"
You slumped down against Garcias shoulder a bit more. Fighting the urge to fall asleep.
"We saw it. Blown the windows out of Hotch's office as well."
"Tell him..." You trailed off falling into unconsciousness.
Garcia looked at you, panic washing over her. "Y/N? Spencer she's passed out. I don't know what to do- I know I shouldn't take the knife out."
"Is she sat up or laying down?"
"She's sat up, do I lie her down?"
"Yes, don't knock the knife though- I need EMTs with me right now- Garcia, I need you to check if she's breathing." Spencer sounded out of breath, "I'm coming to you as fast as I can."
"Okay, she's laying down. And yes she's breathing."
"You're doing well Garcia. We're seconds away now."
Garcia still let out a scream when the paramedics burst through the door. Stumbling away from your figure, she bumped shoulders with Spencer as the experts dealt with you.
"Do you think she's going to be okay?" Garcia asked him.
"I don't know. But I feel like a prized jackass now. What if she's not? She will have died thinking I was mad at her."
"I don't know what to say Reid. She was trying. She thought you'd stopped trying."
"The argument was stupid. I was more annoyed us arguing had ruined some plans I had."
"Plans? What do you-ohhh." Garcia cut herself off as she clocked onto what Spencer meant.
He quickly pocketed the small jewellery box as the EMT turned to the pair of them.
âyou meet Spencer again after losing out on the BAU job. he comforts you while you do your best not to flirt. bombshell!reader, 0.9k
You lose out on the BAU job to Elle Greenaway. It drives you crazy.
You work just as hard as Elle does, youâre professional no matter what Jason Gideon has to say about you, and you know you could do it. You have just as many successes as Elle does.
It makes you feel sick. You tried so, so hard.
Iâm sorry, Hotch had said, and at least youâd had his support. He was kind enough to tell you in person. I canât make the decision without Gideon, and if he thinks you arenât right for it right now, weâll have to wait.
Wait. As though Jason Gideon was ever going to change his mind about you.
You open your purse and take out the barrel of your sheer lipstick. Your compact is next. You hold the mirror up and angle your face in the sun, popping the lid off of the lipstick, and pressing its flat end to your bottom lip. The line you draw is perfectly precise. Your hand barely trembles.
You drop the mirror down and rub your lips together slowly. No matter what falls out of your control, you can present yourself to your liking. You can be immaculate. Youâ
âHi.â
You look up from your rumination, startled. Youâd been thinking so hard someone actually got the run up on you.
âHi,â you say, tilting your head gently toward your shoulder.
Dr. Spencer Reid stands a polite three feet away from you. Heâs suddenly changed. The last time you met him he was wearing his long hair in a side part. Now itâs split down the middle, just a touch shorter at the sides, and heâs wearing glasses.
(Heâs wearing glasses!)
Youâd thought he was pretty before.
âAre you okay?â
âIâm good,â you say, tempted to call him baby, maybe sweetheart. Heâs a sweet looking boy. His sweater vest makes you wanna hold his hand. âThank you for asking. Why are you asking?â
You talk to him with no derision nor malice, just curiosity.
He frowns. It gives his eyes a sad shine. âI know you wanted the open position. You wouldâve been great at it.â
âYou think so?â you ask, surprised.
âIâve seen some of your write ups. Weâve used your summaries in one of our profiles, do you⊠remember that?â
You send Hotch anything he wants to see.
âI donât know why Gideon doesnât like you⊠Heâs so rarely wrong about people, but youâreâŠâ He licks his lips nervously. âYouâreâ youâre smart. Youâre inquisitive. I think you would be an asset to the team, and itâs a shame you didnât get your chance.â
Youâre making him nervous and it isnât your intention. You put your hands in your lap and stop giving him the look, swapping your amicable smile for a proper friendly one. âThank you. Is it okay if I call you Spencer? Dr. Spencer Reid is a lot to say at once.â
He laughs, still nervous. âYeah. Yeah, of course.â
âSpencer, thank you for caring so much, but Iâm okay. I think I might still have a chance one day, but with Elle gone, the sex crimes division is going to need me.â You lift your chin. If heâs sought you out to tell you heâs sorry, your premonitions about him when you met a few weeks ago were correct. Heâs as kind as he is pretty. âI love your glasses. Are they for reading?â
âI always wore glasses when I was a kid, and then I started working here, and I thought it might make me seem less⊠childish, if I wore contacts, but theyâre the worst.â
You laugh happily. He says it in such a pained voice. âThe glasses suit you so much,â you say, shoving your things into your bag and standing. âDid you wanna go for coffee? I need a pick me up before I go back to the office.â
Spencer touches his wrist. âAre you serious?â
âWhy wouldnât I be serious?â you ask, again, without a drop of malice. Youâre not stupid, Spencer has all the nervousness of someone whoâs been mistreated before, and heartily, and itâs easy to be soft with him not solely because of it, but because he seems so sweet. You could happily be his friend. âDo you like coffee? We could get those hot donuts from the cafeteria, have you tried those?â
You close the little gap between you both and raise your hand carefully to his face. Gentle, you try to pull a stray hair from the hinge of his glasses leg without snapping it.
âYou can tell me all the stuff Iâm doing wrong.â
âYouâre not doing anything wrong,â Spencer says.
âCome on, there has to be something.â
His mouth gives him away. âItâs not that youâre doing it wrong, youâre justâ youâ youâre not looking at things theâŠâ Your fingertip brushes his cheek as you drop your hand. ââŠRight way, sometimes.â
âI wanted your recommendations.â You bump his elbow with yours. âIâll buy you a coffee and you can write me a list. Cool?â
He cleared his throat. âYes. Cool.â
Youâre thinking itâll be the start of a good friendship. You and Dr. Reid make quite a pair.

Heâs back. Your boyfriend is back. There's a tangle of nerves in the pit of your stomach at the mere thought of seeing him again, especially after all thatâs happened. You get to hug him, to kiss him, to feel the softness of his thick, beautiful hair under your fingers again.
But not now. His mother is missing. Those are the words Emily spoke to you over the phone after she called to let you know heâs released. Itâs ironic, to hear such wonderful news just to be followed by something so disheartening. And the guilt creeps in, that nagging feeling that maybe, just maybe, if you had gone to visit his mom as planned, this nightmare could've been avoided.
âDo not blame yourself,â Emily adds, her voice is a lifeline in the chaos of emotions. It's as if she can read your thoughts, know exactly what you're feeling without you saying a word. âJust stay where you are, okay? I've got agents keeping an eye on your building. I'll keep you updated."
You're left with no choice but to accept. Your boyfriend may be back, but you still canât see him.
And you get it. His mom comes first, always has, and always will. A child's love for their parents is unbreakable, and if you were in his shoes, you'd move heaven and earth to keep your parents safe. So, naturally, you do what any loving and supportive girlfriend would doâyou wait.
And wait. And wait. And wait. Each passing second stretches into agonizing minutes, and those minutes drag on into long, uncertain hours. One skipped meal turns into two, and suddenly, you're lying in bed in the dead of night with an empty stomach. You know you should take care of yourself, but your mind is fixated on him.
What is he doing? Has he eaten anything? Is he taking breaks at all? Has he managed to get any sleep? And most importantly, has there been any news about his mom?Â
Your mind is racing, flooded with countless unanswered questions. You try to find comfort in sleep, but every ring of your phone feels like a cruel interruption, each time hoping it's himâor at least a word from his friends. But it's always a disappointment, just meaningless notifications and distant messages from your friends about mundane plans.
Eventually, exhaustion overtakes you, but your sleep is restless, it's as if your mind refuses to grant you a moment of respite. Then, in the quiet hours of the night, at two in the morning, you're jolted awake by the familiar sound of a new message on your phone.
His mom is safe.
A sigh of relief escapes you, almost audible in the silence. You type out a response to Emily with trembling hands.
Thatâs good to hear. Is he fine?
Not great, but he's managing.
That's all you need to hear. His mom is safe, and though he's not doing great, he's managing well enough. With a weight lifted off your shoulders, you finally allow yourself to relax. At least now you can drift back into sleep knowing that he's partially okay.
You wake up again later that night by a rapid knocking. At first, you try to brush it off as just noise from the neighbors, but as you slowly come to your senses, you realize it's coming from your apartment.
Half-worried and half-curious, you reluctantly peel yourself from the comfort of your bed, your mind racing with possibilities as you approach the door. When you glance through the peephole, you're met with a sight that instantly jolts you awake. Without a second thought, you fumble with the lock and swing the door open.
And there your boyfriend stands, but he's a far cry from the man you remember. His hair is wild and unkempt, and his eyes, usually bright and lively, are now dull and tired, shadowed by exhaustion. He's dressed in his usual suit and tie, a combination you've always admired for its professional and polished look. But today, his shirt is half-tucked, half-untucked, and his tie hangs loosely around his neck
âSpence, what are youââ
Before you can finish, he bursts through the door, wrapping his arms tightly around you.
"I'm sorry," he breaks, his voice strained with emotion. "IâI wanted to come here as fast as I canâ"
âHey, hey, itâs alright.â You wrap your arms around his waist and take in a deep breath. Despite his disheveled appearance, he smells exactly as you rememberâwarm, familiar, like home. âItâs all good, honey, I donât mind.âÂ
âItâs not alright. I shouldâve answered your callsââ
âSpencer, itâs okay,â you interrupt gently, running your fingers soothingly down his back. âAfter all the time youâve been away, a few more hours hardly matter.â
âWell, it should matter,â he mumbles against your skin, his voice muffled as he buries himself in the crook of your neck. âI shouldnât have left you like this.â
You hold him tighter, feeling his weight against you, his breath warm against your skin. âShh,â you murmur, rubbing his back in comforting circles. âYouâre here now, thatâs all that matters.â
He nods against your neck, his grip on you tightening as if he's afraid to let go.
âHowâs your mom?â
He lifts his head slightly, meeting your gaze with tired eyes. âSheâs... sheâs okay,â he replies. âWe found her. Sheâs safe now.â
You exhale a breath you didnât realize you were holding, relief flooding through you. âIâm glad to hear that,â you say, cupping his cheek gently. âAre you okay?â
He hesitates for a moment as if considering the question carefully. âIâm fine, just⊠tired.â
Your fingers traced the lines of exhaustion etched on his face. âLetâs get you inside and comfortable, okay?â
He nods, and you usher him inside, relief flooding through you as you close the door behind you. Your fingers naturally intertwine with his as you guide him towards your bedroom.
âDo you want anything? Water, food?â
He shakes his head, falling into step with you. âMaybe later,â he murmurs, squeezing your hand. âHow have you been?â
"Well," you begin, your voice filled with warmth. "'I've been keeping busy while you're gone.â
You lead him to the edge of the bed, sitting him down while you stand between his legs, your eyes meeting his tired gaze. "Work has been... work," you say with a small smile, trying to lighten the mood. âAnd I managed to put up the shelf I bought online. Look.â
You gesture towards the bookshelf nestled in the corner of the room and he follows your gaze. âYou did that all by yourself?â
"Yeah, I did," you reply, your smile widening. "It wasn't easy without having you constantly nagging me how to do it, but I figured it out."
He nods, a hint of regret shadowing his features. âI'm sorry I wasn't here to help you.â
You shake your head, moving closer to him and placing a comforting hand on his cheek. "Donât apologize.â
He leans into your touch, his gaze meeting yours with a vulnerability that tugs at your heartstrings. His eyes, wide and brown, look up at you, and you canât help but compare him to a puppyâsad, yet undeniably endearing, with an innocence that melts your heart. You brush a thumb gently across his cheek, noting the subtle change in his appearance.
âYou grew out your facial hair.â
A faint blush colors his cheeks as he shifts under your gaze. "Yeah, I guess I did," he replies, his voice tinged with self-consciousness.Â
You can't help but smile at his bashfulness. "I like it," you assure him. "It suits you."
âReally?â
âItâs growing on me.â
His expression softens at your words, a warmth spreading through his tired features. "Maybe I'll keep it.âÂ
You nod in agreement, a smile playing on your lips as he wraps his arms around you, pulling you closer. He sighs contentedly as he leans into your chest, and you gently stroke his hair, soothing him with your touch.
"It's good to be back," he murmurs, his voice muffled against your shirt.
"It's good having you back," you reply softly, brushing a strand of his hair away from his face.
âI thought I was never going to see you again.â
"Why would you think that?â
He hesitates for a moment. "After everything that happened... I wasn't sure if I'd make it back to you.â
You gently tilt his chin up, meeting his gaze. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that.â
His eyes glisten with unshed tears as he nods, his vulnerability laid bare. "I was also afraid that I might lose you,â he adds. âI was afraid youâd get tired of waiting for me.â
âOh, honeyâŠâ
âEveryone I care for always leaves, sooner or later. And I canât bear the thought⊠the thought of not coming home without you in my life,â he admits, his voice trembling with emotion and you feel a lump form in your throat as you listen. "I feel⊠so different right now. I donât feel like my usual self, and I-I was afraid you wouldnât like this version of me.â
You pull back slightly, cupping his face in your hands, your gaze locked with his. "I would never think any less of you.â
He sniffs, and that's when you notice a tear escaping down his cheek. Your heart aches even more. âI might not be the same person you last saw me.â
You shake your head, brushing away his tears with your thumb. "It doesn't matter," you reply earnestly. âYou're still the person I fell in love with, and nothing will ever change that.â
He looks at you in disbelief, as if he can't quite comprehend how you could love him so unconditionally. "How can you be so sure?"
"Because I see you," you reply. "Beyond the surface, beyond the changes, I see who you areâthe kindness, the strength, the love that has always been a part of you. And that's something that remains unchanged, no matter what."
He exhales softly, his features softening as he absorbs your words. But you arenât finished, not until he realizes how worthy of love he is.
âYouâre still the man who loves silly magic tricks, youâre still the man who asks for jello every time we have dessert,â you tease, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of your lips. He cracks a small smile at your playful words. âYouâre still the man who loves books, who loves learning. You're still the man who loves helping other people.â
You lean closer, your breath mingling with his as your lips almost touch.
âAnd Iâll be the one to love every version of you,â you whisper. âThe person you were, the person you are, and the person you're becoming.â
He grips your hips and pulls you closer. Without a word, you understand what he needs, what he's asking for, and you close the distance between you, your lips brushing against his.
You never truly understand the meaning of bittersweet until this very moment. His tears carry the saltiness of sorrow, but his lips offer a sweetness that lingers on your tongue. You feel the weight of his pain, the heaviness of his grief, yet you also sense a comforting warmth in the way his lips move gently against yours.
You can feel his uncertainty, and itâs clear that getting back into his old routine won't be easy after everything he's been through. But youâre here for him and you're willing to support him in any way you can.
Because heâs back. Your boyfriend is back. You can hardly believe you get to hug him, kiss him, and run your fingers through his thick, beautiful hair once more. You canât believe you get to hold him again in your arms, and you hope to do so for a very long time.

Warnings: mentions of political marriages, strangers > friends > lovers, kissing near towards the end, mentat at mind, lover boy at heart
The ordeal is simple â at-least on paper. You and Paul are meant to be wed on the single promise of a shared goal between the two of your houses, which come down to one thing and one thing only: security. Wealth, power and standing do not surmount to what, in Letoâs words, the Emperor has planned for the futility of house Atreides. He knows, Thufir knows, everyone knows, that Arrakis wasnât branded to be some sweetly wrapped gift that fell into his lap when the time came to reward the duke. No - matters of this sort were much too systematic, especially at a scale such as this. Something must be done, to solidify the house of Atreides upon the rain-swept expanse of Caladan. Something to bind the Atreides to their mother planet long enough, so there might not be strife or conflict that sharpens whatever blade is held against them. So, wed Paul you must.
Simple doesnât translate so easily against the obscurity that is the real world.
In the real world, the two of you are mere strangers. The only thing that binds the two of you is the responsibility bourne from the insignias that you wear, that are soon to culminate as two adjoining houses; whilst his happen to be two thick lines of silver against his collar, yours take on a different shape, a strange alterity between curves and striking lines, and shot through with gold against the sleeve of your garments. There is it â the mere tellings of your differences, as pure as day. He wonders how the symbols will look like, meshed together and serving as one. He wonders how he will appear next to you - frail boy or able man?
Half of the time, you catch his eye simply because you are there, sitting duly next to your father and ascertaining the weight of such a marriage past paper, when all is said and done. Other times, you are a blurring fragment in the hallways, swathed in your houseâs colours and too fleeting to get a hold on, sometimes even flanked by your houseâs livery. Mere strangers, he reminds the indiscernible feeling in his chest.
-
âWhere is your head at? Focus!â Gurney growls out, more harsh tempered than his usual mood, as he crouches and takes Paulâs fair strike for what it was - a clean swipe that was meant for his chest, which now deflects smoothly off of the older, more haggard manâs shield, and sets the room abuzz with vibrations. And so the smell of ozone worsens, Paul calculates in his head, as he shakes his head thoroughly and shifts his grip on his weapon. Gurney isnât impressed â not in the way he usually is. Paul knows he must answer.
âThis is me focusing,â Paul offers, and doesnât grit his teeth or possess a sudden candour with his strikes because he respects Gurney. But he cannot help the mood that has blanched him - voids, how he wishes he could confess those words, verbatim, to the older man who currently encircles his passes like a seasoned ring-fighter. But the word âmoodâ had gotten him in line last week, when Gurney had simply upped his antics with the mere mention of it, âIâm just out of breath.â
âNo, youâre not.â Gurney smiles, clenching his palm around the ragged hilt of the Kindjal. He knows, Paul thinks bitterly.
âNo, Iâm not.â Paul confesses. He tests a low swoop of his dagger - ill-advised - and reigns his laugh in when it catches Gurney off his feet, his back staggering against the training table.
Letâs see how you like this, lad, Gurney formalises in his mind, as he presses his defence like a bull and keeps his attacks slow and pulsing through the air, blinding all of Paulâs spots, âIs it the marriage?â
Cornered for tactics, and focusing mostly on not getting cleaved to pieces during training, Paul scoffs, âOf course itâs the marriage.â
âYouâre scared.â
At this, Paul counters metal with metal, bounding back when it rings against his ears, rings against the room, âIâm not scared. Iâm prepared to fulfil my duty, even if I am given options,â a dull parry, which still creates momentum, and thus space, between the two men, âIâm only uneasy because Iâve never actually met her.â
âYou have. Several times. Or have you been asleep throughout your fatherâs meetings?â
Paul stresses a firm strike against Gurney, which repels off of his own shield by how close the dagger strikes the space between them. But heâs good at catching himself. Gurney, unused to Paulâs strange and newly learnt manoeuvres, falls short. He tries to counter, but cannot, but he is most impressed for it.
âConcede.â Paul breathes, low and attempting a threatening veil, as Gurneyâs back meets the floor. The old man grunts, before nodding deftly as Paul hauls him to his feet with one palm alone. They settle in different corners of the room, silence beseeching both of them suddenly - theyâre not two men for silence, but in Gurneyâs head, Paul is undergoing a strange part of his life. He wonders if Paul fears it in the night.
Paul interjects Gurneyâs thoughts.
âDo you - have you⊠met her?â his voice is meek. Uncharacteristic. Gurney smirks.
âOnce or twice, in the hallways.â
âAnd? How is she?â
Gurney laughs. The boy is eager today.
-
The next time I see her, I will speak, he promises.
Better said than done. With no similar companions his age - a course of action being the very result of his heritage, his mother reminds him - he truly doesnât know how to properly seek you out. You are more shadow than friend, more idea than person, and the more he sees you, the more he forgets.
âSomething on your mind?â Duncan nudges him with the edge of some Fremen equipment, that bothers him well enough to dredge out Paulâs concerns. Not that he needs to. It is written on his face.
âYes,â Paul confesses, readjusting for comfort, âItâs about my marriage.â
âYou speak as though you will marry tomorrow. It is not set it stone. Not yet.â
Paul scoffs, âI know that. I just havenât met her yet. And I want to.â
Duncan, in the midst of polishing some hardware and solar devices, that smell quite faintly of hot sand and the sun, pauses to glance away from Paulâs face. When his gaze returns, it is almost teasing, a smirk ripping across his face, âYouâre in luck today.â
âWhat?â Paul swivels and â
Oh. Oh.
Youâre standing there. Hands clasped behind your back, yes. Stoic, assessing expression, yes. Clothed in rich colours of your house, as you always are in his passing vision - only this time, it is a green so deep that it comes across as black. Suddenly, realising that you have been found out by not only Duncan Idaho, but by the Dukeâs son himself, you uncharacteristically let slip your own embarrassment through wide eyes.
âOh. My apologies â I, uh, didnât mean to intrude. I was just curious by the - er - gadgets.â you fumble for words at a rate that would be comical if not for the morbid embarrassment seizing you by the seconds. Youâre shaking your head politely, smile strained and legs rooted where they are and ready to melt into the various corridors - back to your own duties, you assume. Away from company. Paul, however, stands linearly and full of purpose, face constructed of hard lines that all smile at you.
âNo, please. Join us,â his voice is smooth - youâve never heard him talk, even around those board room meetings - and his hand is extended to gesture within the space, âI insist.â
Duncan raises a brow in amusement and Paul wants to tamp his feet down with a neat blow. That pulls a chortle out of the man, which only further startles you. Paul invites you cordially to take a seat, where you fit awkwardly, like you were truly imposing. However, in a manner of minutes, that is all erased when Duncan lets the two of you weigh the objects in your hand â sand compactor, weapons, stinted devices that were far too aged to be still of use but gathering attention nonetheless. When Paul passes it to you, he feels your soft fingers pass underneath his own, where a warm feeling curdles as an afterthought.
âThisâis a sand compactor?â you ask warily, tilting the device as though it would spring up on you and dissolve to bits. Duncan barks out a laugh.
âFor sand compacting, yes.â he humours you. You, however, are too lost on the object, still swirling it around in your palms; eyes peeled downwards.
âYes. I see.â you reply.
The two men dissolve into a fit of laughter. You look up, eyes helplessly trailing from one to the next. The day is easy.
-
Paul is thankful for the event, and so are you. It doesnât solve all his problems, and his head is always probing with inquiries and worries, but he can count on the off chance of seeing you in the hallways. He can count on the fact that you will pause, meet his eyes and smile.
Youâre walking the countless hallways of the estate - Caladan had so much water to offer, but no one on your native planet ever mentioned the striking architecture, the hollowed out walls and think-pieces painted across rooms. High domed ceilings, with absolutely nothing to offer but soft light. Some rooms contained scintillating glass, chairs of different shapes and mediums, tables too big for just a few affairs. Others were bound shut, but that didnât discourage nor intimidate you, nor your entourage.
On one such day, youâre caught in your explorations by none other than the Atreides heir.
In actuality, it is you who catches him first, stood perfectly still at the end of the corridor and holding a terse expression. When he spots you, his shoulders relax and he manages to blink once, before his mouth opens underneath the realisation that you were really here.
âHello.â his voice is strong, and carries well.
That was awkward. This is always awkward. He curses himself.
You smile, and it swipes at the ground beneath his feet, âI didnât expect to see you here.
âThis is my residence, yes?â more jest than anything else. You snort.
âI am aware. Your residence is quite beautiful. I like to wander,â you say, finding yourself fixing a meandering pace beside him, and he smiles softly when he realises that he, too, steps beside you at a similar speed, âI hope you donât mind.â
âI donât. Never.â
It is quick work after that â by pure coincidence, that you joke to Paul that is it is methodical instincts and ground-work as a mentat that he is able to summon himself almost anywhere you are present from that point onwards, you two bump into each other more and more in the corridors, and from there, it extends to the rather large library, the training space with Gurney skirting its edges, the ever-blossoming gardens even, which held more water than shrubbery in retrospect. Meetings pertaining to your marriage held an element of amusement now, as Paul actually tries to catch your eye this time, drumming his lithe and smooth fingers against the table in a way that couldâve passed off as a wandering of his mind as his father droned on about security measures and fuel caps, but you notice.
You hadnât, not before, but you did now. To his pleasure, you even respond in a tiny flickering of fingers against the age-old meeting table, the vibrations a blur against his obvious contentment.
-
âYou look glad.â Gurney comments and Paul realises how uninvolved his attention had been on the room before him. He quickly assesses it and whatever lays within it; table, check. Light source, check. Scratchy walls, check. Gurneyâs ever-gracing height, check.
When had his habits, trained and chained to duty, begun to sweep towards you?
âDo I?â Paul asks, keeping his voice as still as he can manage. He had swiped at his face to rid the itch off his brow, but he unwittingly catches how warm he is. Not uncomfortable, no. But enough to leave a mark on his consciousness. It was like he was simply losing grip on his own composure when he thought of⊠something. It was still fleeting in his own mind.
He is too afraid to retrace his steps and find a familiar pair of eyes staring at him in the recesses of it.
Gurney slaps a hand on Paulâs shoulder, seemingly articulate with the latterâs feelings. Old man, Paul would curse out in jest, but he merely smiles. It is strained, and strange. Paul never puts an effort into his smiles, Gurney notes.
âSomething is on your mind.â Gurney clicks his tongue.
Paul blinks, swallows, âSomething is on my mind.â
âOut with it.â
Paul hesitates, which is strange, because in all his fights he is the first to stoke the flame. He isnât vengeful â at-least, he doesnât think he is â thatâs why his strikes lack a hunger for blood and instead, settle for calculation. Briefness. No means to an end just yet. Or ever, he thinks.
But with you, itâs different. Thatâs what he spits out, what he lets Gurney work with. How you were a supposed intrusion into his life â something he had assumed would be awkward, like a stab wound that had scabbed over and began to weakly throb in pain, always to remind itself of its own compromise to work around demise. He thought you would be that; but upon meeting you, you were anything but that. You were curious and brilliant in your own way â similar to him, yet miles apart so that you were the form of a friend he had always wished for in his youth. You talked about your interests and spent double your time inquiring about his. When your hands brushed, his own grew clammy â thatâs the strangest one of them all, Gurney â And something was blossoming â was it friendship? Was it trust? Was it fear?
What was this spattering and gooey mess slipping over the swell of his heart whenever you appeared? What was it?
He talks and talks and talks until Gurney squeezes his palm over Paulâs shoulder in a way an uncle would do to his nephew who he might want to reassure. Or a brother would to his youngest companion, as if to say: I see you. I hear what you say.
âSounds to me like thereâs an awful lot of trust between the two of you,â Gurney clicks his tongue again, only this time, Paul scoffs. Ah, there he is â there is the Paul Atreides I know, Gurney smiles, âAnd something else too.â
âWhat is it?â Paul asks. His eyes are curious, brows furrowed. Gurney holds down the laugh building in his chest, and the emboldened words in red: youâre falling in love with this friend of yours, boy, and instead, pats him on the shoulder.
âPiece of advice, if youâll heed to anything I say,â Paul straightens with attention, âLet the truth flow. Do not stop it. Do not push it back. To live with the truth, you must learn its ways and be one with it.â
That night, Paul walks back to his room with the truth beneath his skin, and listens to his own heartbeat against his pillow. The rest of him warms with the realisation of, oh, oh, oh.
-
The next time you see Paul, you think youâd done something to offend him. Or bore him. Or something other.
It had become a pleasant habit; meeting him at the Caladan gardens, opting for a spot and sitting with your backs to the grass, counting the stars as you talked. Before, conversation had tipped forth whenever. Now, there was something in the air â tension. And it is him that brings it.
Paul avoids your eyes, settling instead for the vast colouring of grey across the hallway walls whenever he caught you in it. He had stopped sending you the familiar drumming of his fingertips across the meeting table, and instead always froze up when you met his gaze, whereby he turned red with anger â or was it anger? What was it?
Heâd always be staring at your face, and you would wonder if there was a piece of parchment stuck to it, or if he was merely bored around you; most days, you allowed it. It stung, yes, but you had nothing ill to hold against him. But it accumulated, unbeknownst to you, and for him to miss your question yet again made you sigh in defeat â disappointment?
âYou seem distracted,â you say, not bothering to shield the hurt in your words, though you couldnât begin to understand why and when you had ever begun to crave expect the attention of his earthen-dusted eyes, âAm I boring you?â
He straightens up, his eyes wide, which in turn surprises you, âBored? Seven hells, no. âCourse not.â
âWhat did I just ask then?â
He cringes, âI promise Iâm not bored. JustâŠâ
His fingers flex in his lap, before curling into themselves, and his cheeks warm slightly. Is it happening now? Is he doing it now? The weather was right; a typical Caladan breeze, heavy with the wetting of the sky from the day, and now shrouded with clouds and a darkness that was impenetrable. Even as the two of you laid against the bare grass, no one outside could tell either of you apart from the ground itself. In the moonlight, you were almost one with it.
âJust?â you ask. You were curious of this now, âJust what?â
âJust!â he sucks in a harsh breath, his sharp face now boyishly soft and pliant in a way you hadnât seen it before, âI⊠Just promise you wonât take offence to this.â
How ironic.
âI promise, Paul,â you smile, shoulder bumping against his as you glance at the side of his face, the way his nose shapes perfectly against the dampness of the Calandan wind, âTell me.â
Be one with it. Be one with it. It is a mantra in his head.
âI realise that I have begun to grow a certain, uh, affection for you. Yes, I like you. I donât know how it had begun. And I know itâs foolish of me to even act this way when we are set to marry. But I know, in my heart, thatââ a breath, as he nervously glances at your now surprised face and oh, he shuts his mouth. He opens it again, panicked, âMy apologies. I shouldnât haveâlet meââ
âPaul.â you stop him, hands against his one arm that seems to be quivering ever so slightly â how much of it can he hold?
He waits. Bated breath.
You smile, shy and sweet and it whips against him in a way that the wind of his mother planet had never managed to. Here is my dear friend, he thinks, my dear friend who was but a stranger a long time ago and is set to marry me once talks have been concluded. Here is my friend who I have poured my stupid, ill heart to and who still looks at me with kindness.
âI like you too.â
He blinks. He looks at you when you speak and watches, really watches, how your mouth forms against the words. I like you too.
âAs a companion? Or friend, at best? Is that what your âlikeâ refers to?â he asks, nervous in the face of your admission. It makes you smile, as he rambles slightly, and though his countenance is that of poise and grace, beneath he is a a boy of tender heart. Smiling, you grab the front of his thick coat lapel and watch his words die on his tongue as you place a feathery, warm and soft kiss against his mouth. It was so unbelievable, he thought heâd conjured it all up â that you werenât here, timidly kissing him with a sheepish smile on your face, and the stars of his home glinting against your skin. He lets his finger brush your cheek, still dumb-struck.
âAgain.â he whispers. His heart hammers at the sound of your breathy laugh, as you repeat the action, conviction in your palms as they lay upon his cheek, âAgain, please.â
âAgain?â you ask, voice soft and muted as he hoists you atop of his front, chest to chest, and gazing at him like he was everything. Within the action, your golden insignia brushes his own, silver ones so briefly that he can make out a shape bourne from the contact of either two, before they separate. You wanted him, as he wanted you. And soon, you would wed, and the image of gold upon silver wonât be so unclear anymore. Maybe, somewhere warmer and less unbelievable, he could let himself grow familiar with the reality of you. But for now, he could settle for this to be a mere dream he had grown to relish so very much. Even now, he could almost believe none of this to be real, just a trick of the mind. Maybe fatigue or delusion.
He says your name so quietly, a plea, and it has never sounded sweeter, âPlease.â
And yet, the soft press of your mouth upon his convinces him that it is so much more.

i wanted to incorporate some inferences of paulâs character from the early novel (mentat, solitude in terms of companions, great fighter), as well as the film, whilst wanting to stray away from the destruction of house atreides after the gifting of arrakis, which would explain why the marriage needs to take place. sooo no one dies! HURRAH!!!!!!!!! enjoy :]

Pain radiates through your body as you begin to regain consciousness. There are two points that are throbbing and parts of you want to slip back down into the darkness until the aches are gone, but the rest of your body doesnât like that plan.Â
Slowly, the switches in your mind are flipped to âonâ and you become more aware of what is happening around you. There are two people talking near you - a man and a woman whose words you cannot yet process, but the deeper voice sounds so very familiar and comforting. It takes a few moments or hours - you cannot tell - for you to give a name to who is speaking, but when you finally figure it out, your mouth speaks his name.
âMattâŠ?â
Your name is said, then something is touching your face. Your instinct tells you to pull away, so you try to, but there is a gentle pressure keeping you in place.
âHey, hey, hey, itâs okay. Itâs okay. Itâs just me, sweetheart. Itâs just me.â
Forcing your eyes open takes a few tries and you have to blink multiple times to get anything into focus. Slowly, Mattâs face forms in your vision, looking so, so haggard. His hair is fluffed up like heâs been messing with it and heâs got a frown that is so out of place on him. He should be smiling or laughing. That is how you always picture him in your mind - warm and happy.Â
You realize it is his hand that is cupped along your jaw and press into it, letting your eyes close again. His thumb begins to rub along your cheek and you want to melt into it and allow yourself to drift back into the nothingness where there is no pain. Matt, however, has other ideas.
âI need you to stay awake. Can you do that for me?â
You do not want to do that, but since he is asking, your eyes open again. Your brain feels like sludge, but it is your knees that are screaming at you to not move.Â
You are startled into being more aware of your surroundings when a feminine voice speaks from above you.
âMatt, you need to move if you want me to do anything.âÂ
He seems to hesitate, his face screwing up into something clearly unhappy before he finally pulls away from you. He doesnât go far, though, stepping only a foot away. Only once your vision isnât filled with a handsome-exhausted lawyer do you process that you are laying on your couch. You have no idea what is going on, why you are in pain, or how you got to this position, but part of you feels at ease because Matt is there with you.Â
You trust he won't let things go badly for you.
A beautiful, but tired, woman steps into your view, a pen light ready in her hand. She has an air of authority about her that has you not questioning why she is in your living room.Â
âMy name is Claire, Iâm a nurse,â she tells you and you introduce yourself. âYou passed out. I'm going to check your eyes and ask you a few questions to make sure you don't have a concussion.â
âOkay.â You don't remember passing out, but it would explain a few things. Your anxiety-people-pleasing mind pushes your confusion down and wanting the examination to be easier for Claire, ask, âDo you want me to sit up?â
âDo you feel like you can?â She counters and you donât really know the answer, so you try. Your head throbs as you do and your knees are not happy about bending, but you get yourself into sitting. More pieces are added to the puzzle of what is going on, but none of them make any sense.Â
You couldnât tell before, but Matt is wearing a dark red jumpsuit that reminds you of Captain Americaâs armor. There had been a news segment where they had brought out a replica to talk about the design and the function and all you can think is Matt somehow got his own copy and customized it. For whatever reason. You certainly donât know all of his hobbies - it could be a cosplay thing for all you know - or some kink - or both.Â
You are in no position to judge.
The other puzzle piece is Karenâs boyfriend, sitting at your kitchen table looking at his phone, with your daughter in his lap. She is splayed against him in her bright pink jammies and her sleep headband, and you can only guess how deep into dreamland she is. But why is she out here, being held by a near-stranger, and not in her bed?Â
You donât get to ask that question - Claire is back in front of you with her penlight, shining it directly into your eyes. As she does, she fires questions at you.
What is your name? Birthday?
Where are you and who is the current president?
What is twenty divided by four?
You pass the concussion test and are rewarded with two of the biggest ibuprofens you have ever seen. You take them, chasing them down with water from your sticker-decorated water bottle, as Claire tells you what is what.
âYou have a decent sized cut on your forehead. It needed three stitches - and those will dissolve on their own, so you donât need to worry about that. Iâll give you some of these higher milligram pills for the headache youâll have, but a good nightâs rest will have you up on your feet again. Do you need instructions on how to clean the cut?â
You take in the information at face value, still unsure why you are being examined and cared for in your living room as opposed to a hospital. Everyone else seems so sure of what is happening and completely fine with it, so you simply shake your head.
âUm, no, I know how to take care of it.â
âPerfect,â she turns away and begins to pack up a backpack on the coffee table you did not even notice. âIf you start getting nauseous, head to the ER. Now,â she turns to stare down Matt, âIf my delicate hands are no longer needed, Iâm going back to bed so I am well rested for the job I actually get paid for.â
âThank you, Claire. I appreciate it,â he says in a soft voice, but there is a layer of gravel in it you arenât used to.Â
The nurse finishes her packing, then looks to you with a small smile, âit is nice to finally meet you, Iâm sorry it was like this. Late night calls have gone down since he told me about you.â
âNice to meet you?â You say to her as she leaves your apartment, completely unsure of who you just met and what her connection to Matt is.
As you continue you try to comprehend what is going on, Matt moves towards you. He cups your jaw with both hands, smoothing his thumbs over your cheeks, âwhat were you thinking?â
You frown at not only the rougher tone he is using, but the question, âMatt, I donât know what is going on. I donâtâŠâÂ
You trail off and finally mentally address what you have been ignoring.
Your hand creeps up to your face and you feel the edges of the band aid covering up the cut on your forehead. How did you even manage to do that? Claire said you passed out - but how? And why? And why are Matt and Frank here?
Did Minnie call them like she did with Foggy when you were sick?
You donât know those answers, so you switch to things you can figure out. You search your mind, trying to recall what you were doing before you apparently passed out. You remember cleaning the bathroom, then Minnie coming in and throwing up.Â
As those memories surface, the rest rush you - you took Mouse to the bodega and on the way home, some man attacked you. You remember struggling and fighting thenâŠthen there is nothing.Â
The fear you felt then tickles back into your throat and you can feel tears starting to form.Â
âWe were attacked,â you breathe out and almost instantly, Matt is pulling you to him, wrapping his arms around you and cradling you as the reality of what happened hits you. You cling back, burying your face into the rough material covering his shoulder, and try to not break down.Â
Youâd been slapped a few times - but no one has ever tried to physically hurt you to that extent before. You had never felt so helpless - so useless - before. You hadnât been able to protect your daughter.Â
Hands had been around your throat and in your hair and you had flopped around like a fish.Â
He could have killed you.Â
He could have killed Minnie.Â
Matt gently rocks you as you process what happened to you. You try to not cry, but you canât stop it when some tears do start to fall.
âWhy were you out so late?â he asks into your hair and the guilt pools in your belly. You were so stupid to go out.
âMinnie was sick,â you mumble against Mattâs shoulder. âHer stomach was upset, and we didnât have Pedialyte. We had to go get some.âÂ
You can feel him frowning into your hair and it just makes you feel that much worse about everything.
âIt couldnât have waited until morning?â
âNo.â
Itâs not you that responds - it's the man across the room you completely forgot about. You lift up your head to look at Frank, confused why he is speaking up for you. Matt partially turns, pulling you along, and angles his head towards the other man.
âNo?â He questions, not sounding pleased at all that someone else is chiming in.
âNo,â Frank repeats firmly. âThatâs beinâ a parent, Red. Your kid needs something in the middle of the night, you go out and get it. Thatâs how it is - there ainât no waiting until morning when they are sick. Thatâs how they get dehydrated. She didnât do anything different than any other mother in the city.â
Mattâs lip twitches and you have the feeling he is trying to not scowl or snap. You can tell he is just worried and upset over what happened, but youâd never seen him like this before.
But Frank is right - there was no scenario in which you did not go to get Minnie what she needed when she was sick.Â
You look to your baby, and you need her in your arms. You pull away from Matt, wiping at your eyes as you do, and make your way to your small dining room. You feel more than see Matt follow you - practically becoming your shadow until you are in front of Frank. Once you stop walking, he is against you again, his chest to your back and his hand on your hip.
Your daughter is dead weight as she is passed to you and you cradle her to your chest, giving her hair a kiss before asking, âIs she okay?â
âSheâs okay,â Frank assures, and you feel like he is speaking to both you and Matt. âProbably going to have some nightmares and be clingy, but youâve got one brave and smart little girl.â You smile a bit at the praise, because you like to think the same thing about Mouse - brave and smart - your perfect little angel.Â
âGave her some of that Pedialyte,â he adds, âand she drank it all, so hoping whatever made her sick will be gone.â
âThank you,â you mumble. You feel like he is a father and that is why Minnie seems comfortable with him, but he has an air about him that makes you not want to ask.
You rock your daughter in your arms, feeling so grateful that she doesnât have a scratch on her. You have no idea what you would have done if she had been hurt in any way.
You can feel yourself starting to calm - your tears are slowing as you accept and process things and part of you just wants to curl up in bed with your family and sleep for twelve hours.Â
Unfortunately, that is not in the cards for you.Â
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Mattâs head jerk towards the main door, and you canât help but tense up. His vibe since you have woken up has been on edge and you're surprised he hasnât snapped or something, yet. He pulls away from you to stalk towards the hallway and you hold Minnie just a bit closer to you, unsure what he could have heard.
He swings the door open and there is a woman with thick jet black hair and bored looking expression. She pushes past Matt without care and enters into your apartment.Â
âDonât ever ask me to do that again.â
âWhat happened?â Matt asks.
âWell, heâs not dead, but he wonât be waking up anytime soon. I even got you a report number, so you can follow up,â the woman says, and you realize they are talking about the man who attacked you. That makes your heart start beating a little harder and your mouth feel dry.
âDid they say where they were taking him?âÂ
You tune out of the conversation and instead focus on holding Minnie. You press your lips to her hair and avert your eyes away from Matt and the woman. You look briefly to Frank, who is back on his phone, then let your eyes wander elsewhere. Minnieâs sippy cup is sitting on the dining table, so you decide you can at least clean that up.Â
As you move around the table, something else catches your attention.Â
Thereâs a large black bullet proof vest sitting on one of the dining chairs, with a distinctive looking skull spray painted on it.Â
Youâve seen that skull before - itâs a common thing to see spray painted on a wall or post box around Manhattan. Itâs a symbol everyone in the city knows just as well as Spider-manâs emblem or Captain Americaâs shield - itâs the Punisherâs logo.Â
The Punisher - whose real name is Frank Castle, who, if you recall correctly, looks strikingly similar to the man sitting at your dining table.Â
For some reason you do not understand, you do not panic. You simply stare at the vest, all the connections flying around in your brain, and mentally go âWell, that makes sense.â
The Punisher is here because he was with Matt.
Mattâs dark red jumpsuit isnât a cosplay or a kink thing - itâs armor.Â
Itâs armor because he is Daredevil - the protector of Hellâs Kitchen.Â
Matt is Daredevil.
Daredevil is Minnieâs Dad.
Thatâs why he sometimes has bruises and cuts you donât ask about. Thatâs why his knuckles are scarred.Â
Thatâs why he is in your apartment tonight - Daredevil stops people from being mugged.Â
You were being mugged and he came and rescued you. He called his Superhero Doctor to come make sure you were okay so you wouldnât have to go to the hospital and explain how a blind man stopped the attack.Â
âYou okay?â
You look to Frank, and you expect to see blood and guns and mayhem, but all you see is the man who brought you soup. You see Mattâs friend and Karenâs boyfriend - who are two of the kindest people you have ever met in your life. They have treated you better than anyone ever has in your life. They care about you.Â
You flash back to your very first encounter with Frank and you recall how you were scared of him, but Minnie wasnât. Minnie - who is unsure about everyone new. You trusted her instincts even before you knew about her gifts - youâd once heard you can tell a personâs intentions by how toddlers and dogs react to them, and youâve always found it to be true.Â
So, you decide to trust Minnie as well as your initial reaction - it may possibly be because of a concussion but you would actually like to sit and think about what you just learned rather than react blindly.Â
âIâm okay,â you say slowly, sticking with how you feel in that exact moment, and not how your night is going. âI think Iâm going to go lay her down.â You hesitate, then decide you still need to be a good host, since this is your apartment, ask, âWould you like anything to drink?â
âNo, thank you, maâam,â he says, his lips turning up into a small smile. âThink itâs time for me to head out - leave you and Red to have a talk.â
Your cheeks heat up and you know he knows you have figured out who he is. You hold Minnie even tighter and look down to your feet, your anxiety over being perceived starting to spike.
But you know better than to be rude and Frank has always been kind to you and Mouse.
âThank you, Frank. I appreciate everything youâve done for us.â
You do not flee, but you do walk a little faster than normal to carry Minnie to bed. You oh so carefully place her down and tuck her in, making sure Pig is right there with her. Scooby must be out in the living room, and youâll need to grab him when you finally are able to lay down.Â
You stare down at your daughter, who is sleeping so peacefully, and let everything wash over you again. You cover your mouth to try to repress a sob, but you know it doesnât matter - Matt will still hear it.Â
Everything is changing so much and so fast and you donât know how to deal with it.Â
First, you finally find Minnieâs father, then you find out he has super senses and your daughter inherited them, and now you learn he is a superhero.
You donât know how to even begin to process this development. There is no guide for this and you arenât even sure how you even feel.Â
You canât be angry at Matt - you donât know how he got into crime fighting, but you know how passionate he is about being a lawyer and helping people. You know he loves Hellâs Kitchen deeply and you canât imagine having to hear every little crime that goes on.Â
You donât know much about Daredevil. You know he sticks to Hellâs Kitchen and heâs made the area safer. He stops muggings and break-ins, and heâs cleared out various gangs. You know the community likes him for the most part - there is actually a mural of him in an alleyway near the diner.Â
But what does it mean for you and Minnie?Â
How does Matt being Daredevil work with him being a father? If you look back over the last few weeks, you havenât really noticed anything off.Â
But what if he gets into a fight he canât handle?Â
Or some bad guy learns who he is and comes after Minnie to get to him? You know that happens to politicians and cops and such, so it would be no different for a vigilante.Â
What secrets will you need to keep?
Do you need to learn more than basic first aid - like how to stitch someone up?
How will you explain this to Minnie?
Does he know Spider-man? Captain America?
Does he kill?
There are so many questions ping-ponging around in your mind you donât notice when Matt enters the bedroom.Â
He comes up behind you and says your name in a soft voice before wrapping his arms around your waist. He holds you to his chest, chin dropping over your shoulder, and to your surprise, you find yourself leaning into his hold.Â
âI didnât want you to find out this way,â he tells you and you close your eyes at his words, letting his voice wash over you and corral your thoughts into something quiet. âI had a plan to tell you - to explain everything. I swore to myself I wasnât going to hide anything from you.â
You believe him.Â
You wish you would have known sooner, but you also understand why he didnât tell you. Itâs not just something you tell someone, and Matt has proven that his intentions have always been good.Â
âAm I going to get another binder?â you ask, sniffling a little as you do to stop more tears from coming.
âIf you want one, Iâll make you one,â he instantly replies, âjust please donât take Minnie away. I beg of you.â
You can hear the fear and pain in his voice, and you know exactly how he feels. You remember how scared you were that he would take Minnie away.Â
You turn in his arms - looping yours around his middle and resting your forehead on his shoulder.Â
âI wouldnât do that. Not unless she is put into danger.âÂ
âI would never.â
Again, you believe him.Â
His arms tighten around you until you're snuggly pressed into him and you can feel armor and buckles pressing against you. You squeeze him back, needing the comfort and needing something to ground you.Â
You need to feel safe.Â
Matt makes you feel safe. He made you feel safe before you knew what he did in the night and now itâs just amplified.
âDid you stop him?â You ask in a whisper. âThe man who attacked us?â
âI did,â he responds. âIâll stop anyone who dares to try to hurt my family.â
You shakily nod against him, then ask the question you fear, âDidâŠdid she see?â
He doesnât respond right away, but when he does, the guilt is palpable, âNo. Frank made sure she didnât see anything.âÂ
That eases your anxiety a fraction. You will need to talk with Minnie about what happened, and you already fear that conversation. She has never seen anything so violent before and you are surprised she isnât already having bad dreams. You have no idea how sheâs going to react in the morning.
You have no idea how you will react in the morning.Â
You press your face into the crook of Mattâs neck, where thereâs some type of rough black fabric. He begins to rub his hand up and down your back - you donât think it will be soothing, but you donât want him to stop.Â
You want him to stay and hold you.
You want him to keep you safe.Â
So, you tell him.Â
âStay the night,â you mumble against him, and he nods into your hair.Â
Neither of you move to pull away - you stay holding each other in front of your daughter and you wonder if he needs the comfort as much as you do.Â
It feels like time crawls by and your knees, which you must have banged up in the attack, start to make it known that you need to stop standing. Matt must sense something, as he nuzzles into your hair and whispers, âWe can talk more in the morning. Let's get you to bed.â
You hum in agreement, then slowly bring your arms around to Mattâs front so you can place your hands on his chest, âI need to change. Iâll grab you some sweatpants and a shirt.â
âThank you, sweetheart.âÂ
It still takes you a minute to finally step away and when you do, his hands drop from you. As you go to dig for clean sleep clothes, Matt begins to undress. You try to not turn to look - you are curious about how the suit is put together and how he gets in and out. You didnât see any zippers or other clasps, but you suppose he wouldnât want those out in the open if heâs fighting someone.Â
You find two sets of sweats, one large enough for Matt. You hesitate to start changing, but then remind yourself that not only is he blind, but youâve slept together, so you have no reason to be shy. So, you strip and pull on your new pajamas.Â
Matt is still working on his boots when you turn back around, so you set his clothes on the bed. You remember then you are missing a member of the sleep squad.
âDo you know where Scooby is?âÂ
To his credit, Matt doesnât look confused. You wait patiently as he uses his abilities, then smile when he tells you the toy is under the coffee table. You go to fetch him, and finally drop Minnieâs sippy cup in the sink, and when you return, Matt has finished changing.Â
You hold out Scooby to him with a small smile, âDo you want to tuck him in?â
Mattâs solemn face lights up and he takes the dog. You watch, with a strange lightness coming over your heart, as he places Scooby beside Pig. He places the tenderest of kisses to your daughterâs temple, and you can see him move his lips, but are unsure what he actually says.Â
You let him have his moment before taking his hand and tugging him towards your bed. He wonât be sleeping on the couch tonight and both of you know it. You lay down first, then he does, stretching out on his back.
âCome here,â he breathes, and you obey. You roll so you can curl into his side, resting your head on his shoulder and a hand on his chest. His arm wraps around you and you feel Safe.
Your body and mind feel so heavy as you close your eyes, and you hope you can sleep as peacefully as Minnie.Â
The two of you lay in silence and when you finally succumb to your exhaustion, as the darkness takes you, you once again hear Mattâs soft voice.
âI love you.â
