The thing about the Sidlotte romance trope — grumpy brooding man who swore off all love only to fall for plucky girl who he did not think is his type: if the conflict upon first meeting is that he did not find her sufficiently worthy, the conflict for their eventual reunion has to be that he proves his worth to her. Aka groveling. The sadness of episode 8 is that pre-meeting Charlotte, Sidney would not really have done what he did.

The other thing about this romance trope, and upon rewatch it’s clear: Sidney must fall first and I would say that S1 gave a lot of indications that he did fall first (I mean, the fact that he cared enough about Charlotte seeing him naked to drunkenly talk to his friends about it).
