Neoliberals have invested so heavily into their own fantasy that they cannot conceive how an average worker can dream not of the GDP going up, but of simply having their needs met, their housing secured, a stocked fridge and medicine cabinet and guaranteed employment even if it means living in a "totalitarian dictatorship" with no brands or "freedom of speech" (which they know they don't have under capitalism anyway)

One of my grandmothers lived in a very small town with maybe 2 or 3 libraries. Her neighbour was a woman that had to travel a lot to the GDR for either business or political reasons (dont remember which), and she would often bring back magazines from both west and east germany, so that kids could use them to study german - a popular second/third language in the USSR. She told me of a time she encountered a weird phrase in a west german magazine that she simply could not understand the meaning of:

"He has a stable job"

She simply could not understand how a job could be "unstable". Everyone had a job! Unemployment was unheard of! The only people who didnt work were the students and the elderly, or in very rare cases those who were physically disabled and lived off of a quite sizeable pension. What did it mean to have a "stable job"?

I would often talk with her about her life under socialism. She was never a "political" person, but I could tell she missed it dearly. She would talk for hours about how different life felt back then. There was a sense of Unity among all people. Everyone was willing to help not just their neighbour, but a complete a total stranger. Kids felt like there was a future, adults felt safely about the present. Even when things were rough, everyone understood what to do, how to take care of each other, how to sacrifice small things in their life for the greater good.

"These days all aspects of our lifes are permeated by hate, distrust. We distrust the government, we hate our neighbours, our children hate the present and do not believe in the future. Sure, some things are "better". It's easier to buy "stuff", there's so much of it everywhere. And some of that "stuff" is better than anything available to us under socialism. But the things that actually matter are all gone. There is no Unity, there is no purpose, there is only greed and hate" (rough translation of our conversation from a few months ago)
