Daryl knows lots of edible herbs, mushrooms and some healing herbs and roots but he came to that knowledge when he was older (hence the poison oak childhood incident he told Andrea about). He learned it partly from his father but mostly from Merle. Being older and remembering his grandmother and mother better Merle knew more of the old traditions and knowledge. As a boy he had a special knack for finding mountain ginseng, which always brought a good price, but as he grew older he found easier, though less legal, ways to make money.

Merle also played the fiddle (which makes losing his hand so much worse) and knew countless old songs. Daryl's favorite was Angeline the Baker and he'd ask him to play it over and over. When they were kids sometimes Merle would spook his little brother by singing There Was an Old Lady all Skin and Bones. Years later, when the world had gone well and truly to hell and they were making their way to the safety Atlanta claimed, Merle sang that song once more after Daryl put down a walker, more out of pity then of defense, who matched the song's description far too well. "Wasn't funny then, ain't funny now," Daryl grumbled as Merle laughed.

Neither of them were good singers but their father could sing like a lark when he was sober. What few good memories Daryl has of his father where the rare times when he'd sing while Merle fiddled.
