honestly more about gob and the homoeroticism of the show

I like that Gob’s questionable moments and mentions pertaining to sexuality aren’t written in the same “haha, gay jokes” way that Tobias’ are. Tobias’ existence fills Arrested Development’s gay jokes check box so that Gob’s doesn’t have to. Not every less-than-straight thing Gob’s said or action he’s taken has been ridiculous or outrageous or even entirely funny. Sometimes those moments are just there. They don’t always seem to serve any real purpose, from a writer’s standpoint. They don’t always generate a laugh or an ongoing gag or even reaction from the rest of the characters. And that’s what makes me feel like it’s humor for Tobias, but it’s character development for Gob. Tobias’ moments bring in immediate response via (intended) laughter from the viewers and bewildered looks from the surrounding characters. Gob’s do on occasion, but often not. So if the purpose of Gob having these experiences isn’t immediately apparent, one can only assume that the purpose is in a perpetual state of build up.
