I think it was hurricane Katrina. We learned about it at school while it was happening. I remember seeing videos of houses and people being washed away by water at school. I was in like second grade. And we had one kid who was displaced by it and somehow he ended up coming across the entire country to stay. He entered my class in the middle of the year and didn’t stay for the next one because we went back down to New Orleans. I still remember his first name too. But my strongest memory of that time was the first snow of the year because he told me he’d never seen it before. And I was like ??? How?? Because 7 year old me couldn’t comprehend that it didn’t snow in some parts of the world. He was the most excited of all of us to play in it. And also the saddest kid I’d ever met up until that point in my life. He’d cry sometimes and I didn’t know what to do about it. We were really good friends while he was here. I remember missing him a lot after he left.
