Top Posts
In conclusion, my Top Posts were the picture representing Artifacts. It explains how the culture in an organization were ranked.
My conversation with Manny on Constructing Rationality made me critical think about how if we rationalize "after the fact" it is not being irrational, but is simply a natural tendency.
Annette Simmons point on Storytelling that "stories are how humans interpret things as good or bad, important or irrelevant, safe or dangerous, who is ‘one of us’ or one of them’". This opened my eye to why Apple has resorted to using their customers stories to market their products.
At the very end of the semester, our group realized and it was made more clear that organizations have dependence on each other. Manny and Alex's coincidence of not knowing they worked together to transport and host athletes was a real-life example we stumbled upon.
Here is an example of one! Ben and Jerrys (ironically) appeared on their website. Interesting to know that the duo originally considered opening a bagel business instead of ice cream.

This is an link to a website called "Today I Found Out". There are news articles and podcast's with facts that you may not know about some organizations and businesses
An advertisement that Google came out with to market their search engine. A granddaughter reconnects her grandpa with his childhood best friend whom he hadn't seen in decades using Google.
This video draws attention because Google is connecting themselves with the values of relationship; an excellent marketing strategy done by Google.

My godmother, Gail, the former VP of Western Union (she recently took a position elsewhere) talks about how the company faced decline. She was interviewed with questions about exactly what their deficit was--I believe that interview training and skills were necessary for her to confidently answer those questions.
The interview, though, focuses on how they were trying to turn the company around by expanding into Africa.
Interesting look at the inside reactions of the executives of Domino's Pizza when hearing the negative feedback. Shows their true values and dedication to their pizza. I believe being so passionate has helped them turn around and incline their business.
Yesterday Alex, Manny and I were working on our group presentation. We got to talking about what we have done in our past jobs. Manny explained an event he had to work at his restaurant. He had to host Nike athletes for a dinner they were going to. Alex asked if they were all women and if it was during the summer. Manny responded yes, and it happened that Alex--through his work--drove them there.
This story we saw demonstrates the dependence of organizations on other organizations. Alex drove the athletes from their hotel to Manny who then helped with their dinner. In this case, the Westin Hotel and P.F.Changs had to communicate and connect in order to successfully operate.
I just applied for a job simply by emailing the boss. This was unique in that I have never had an application so simple. What are some more unique or less formal forms of communication you have seen in organizations?
My supervisors at work communicate to their employees by mainly texting. It's definitely easy and we communicate instantly. I've seen some employees treat our supervisors, though, like less of a supervisor and more like a friend. That's okay at some times, but when our supervisor needed them to be serious, they didn't catch on.
Technology Change
Page 333 "Technology, or the use of new equipment or information processing software to accomplish work."
Recently at my work, we got a new printer. The old printer would jam paper constantly, not turn on or connect to the computer. It slowed down efficiency and made the employees frustrated. We were also wasting resources by not being able to use the crumbled up, jammed paper. Once we got a new printer, there was less work-place tension. Although such a small piece of equipment it showed how dependent we were on it and that change can eliminate inefficiency and frustration.

According to Larkin and Larkin “…management should communicate only the facts during a major change, not try to dress the change up in lofty-sounding values, pithy slogans, or vision statements” (OCAG, p. 342).
If in a position of power in an organization would you suggest...
I agree with Endya, there needs to be a balance and you definitely should not lose sight of the organizations values. Most people agree that change is difficult but reiterating values may help cope with the change. Knowing the facts as well as the core beliefs will both assist to know why there is change and know that it's coming from somewhere.
This picture says a lot about power and how one person usually takes over everything in an organization. Which I think is wrong, everyone should have equal power. What do you all think???
Source: http://managerlink.monster.com/training-leadership/articles/462-7-types-of-power-in-the-workplace
Everyone having equal power, I think, is good and bad. It depends on the organization. If you're in an organization based off of hierarchy then not everyone can have equal power. You have CEOs and managers and then front-line employees. However, giving everyone an equal opportunity to earn power is what can keep employees motivated.
Gendered Organizational Communication
We just got to the chapter called “Gendered Organizational Communication in my gender & comm class. This chapter lists 3 misconceptions in the workplace.
1. Think Manager- Think Male
2. Communication styles don’t change
3. Careers must follow linear patters
What do you think is wrong with these perceptions of the workplace?
I think that "communication styles don't change" is a major misconception in the work place and one we have talked about a lot in class. Gender, of course is a misconception, but styles that do not change relates to the institutional theory that- "its always been done this way so it's going to continue to be done this way". Of course this adds structure and guidelines to an organization but sometimes to much dependence on such guidelines will result in unsatisfactory non-programmed, creative decision making.
On page 142 of the OCAG book, it states, “Basically we’re suggesting that sometimes the ritualistic aspects of the sales encounter reinforce our understandings and acceptance of social reality, and sometimes they provide a sense of belonging or identity.” After I read this I thought of a chapter...
I think that scripts shouldn't be used when working in sales. It's good to know the product but not to the extent when you can't improvise with each individual customer. My manager says to use a "Elevator Speech" when talking about the product... meaning that if you were in an elevator with the customer for a short time, what would you say about the product? So in that case I think it's important to have a small script prepared but when personally working with a customer and building a relationship you should be able to carry on a natural conversation.
Contructing Rationality
OCAG page 61
We often take action and then “rationalize” after the fact. This tendency does not make our actions irrational.
Can anyone explain how this doesn’t make the tendency irrational?
I think it's natural to go back and rationalize decisions after we make them. Whether it's deciding how you acted within the last seconds of a game you could have won or a decision on how you thought would make more profits within a company-you can't see into the future so you make a decision you think is best at that given time. So if it doesn't go as planned, or does go as planned, it's natural to go back and look at steps you took to decide what you did. It doesn't mean you're being irrational because that would mean you're being unreasonable. Kind of difficult to put into words!

"Multitasking makes workers feel more productive but is in fact far less efficient that concentrating on one task at a time" Pg 50 OCAG
This reflects our class group project because everyone has an assigned role. I think if we didn't have assigned roles then it would be a lot harder to organize and be efficient!
Think about it 🙇💡
What does efficiency mean to you & how do you display it in your life?
Efficiency to me means having goals and working towards them without being side tracked. Like the book stated, multitasking slows down efficiency and is distracting. You think you’re being efficient doing different things at the same time but I believe you’re most efficient when focused on one part.
