Catelyn doesn’t just ask Brienne to escort her daughters. She entrusts her with the continuation of her family, her line, her heart. By that point, Catelyn has lost almost everything that anchors her to certainty: Ned is dead, Robb is at war, Bran and Rickon are presumed dead, and Sansa and Arya are scattered into enemy hands. What she does still have is meaning, and she places it deliberately.
House Tarth’s sigil being the sun and moon quartered together turns Brienne into more than a knight-for-hire. She becomes a living vessel for that charge.

Ned once describes Sansa and Arya as opposites but complementary sun and moon, courtesy and ferocity, day and night and here is Catelyn choosing a woman whose house literally bears both symbols to guard them. Not one daughter, but both. Not one way of being a girl, but all of it.

And it matters that it’s Brienne. A woman who is mocked, rejected, and treated as monstrous for failing femininity, yet who is unwavering in loyalty, honor, and care. Catelyn who understands better than almost anyone how cruel the world is to women who step out of prescribed roles chooses her anyway. Catelyn sees that Brienne’s “failure” to be what the world wants has made her incorruptible.
Brienne also shares clear parallels with the Stark girls. Like Arya, she doesn’t fit the traditional mold of womanhood in a patriarchal society like Westeros and is punished socially for it. And like Sansa, Brienne is deeply idealistic: she believes in songs, in the idea of true knights, in honor as something real rather than performative. What makes Brienne especially interesting is that she carries both of these traits at once. She has Arya’s refusal to conform and Sansa’s faith in ideals, even after the world repeatedly tries to beat those beliefs out of her.
There’s also something deeply maternal and defiant in it. Catelyn cannot protect her daughters herself anymore, but she refuses to leave them to men who see them as pawns or hostages. She chooses a woman sworn not to a house or crown, but to her. It’s personal. It’s intimate. It’s a mother saying: if I cannot be there, then let it be someone who will love them fiercely, without claiming them.
And symbolically, it closes a circle. Ned names his daughters sun and moon. Catelyn gives them to the woman whose banner already holds both in balance. The world is falling apart, but meaning still exists. Choice still exists. Catelyn can still shape the story, even as everything is being taken from her.

Yeeessss, modern AUs are so incredibly fun. And SOTF has a very unserious (but involved) one where everyone lives & also has access to both therapy & psychiatric medication (congratulations, Daemon Targaryen & Rhaella Royce on your matching father/daughter mood stabilizer prescriptions)
Ella was going to college for an ever-changing major until her parents began their lengthy, messy divorce proceedings. She tried to set the chem lab on fire, got put on academic probation, dropped out, & went off-grid for a full year. She re-emerged onto society engaged to a controversially older single father from the less prestigious half of his new-money family
Ella went on to publish a trilogy of fantasy books & give several divisive interviews. Her series is famously unadaptable because she keeps meddling in production, keeping the movies in development hell until she uses nepotism to give the rights to adapt a series based on the Lady Adrienne series to her cousin (Aemond) that used to run the fan-site like it was the navy
Yorick actually thrived at college, & is who talked his sister down from arson. He got a law degree after graduating with a political science degree, making him one of the most insufferable people in the family to talk to. This was made worse by the fact he went into corporate law & got a job in the legal department of the (Royce) family company (Vizzy offered him a job, Yorick turned it down before he even finished speaking).
In contrast to Ella, Yorick has minimal online presence, & mostly just appears in photos taken of him & Shireen (or Borros, or Laenor+Joffrey) at some charity function or other, or in posts his kids have made. Two instances of these videos are incredibly popular. I'll get into the second one, but the first one was a video Rhea took explaining how she came home for the weekend & went all through the house looking for her dad, & she found him but he claims he's trapped, & then flipping the camera to show Yorick cross-legged on the floor with a gigantic iguana (his beloved pet) in his lap that he refuses to move even though his legs are falling asleep.
Aemon played football in college & barely graduated with his business degree because he just picked it out of some feeling of obligation & didn't really care. He played professionally for a few years before retiring & taking a cushy nepo job doing marketing for his mom's company.
Because he was a public figure for a few years, Aemon has a relatively sizable following, & people have very strong opinions about him. There is a very long video essay dissecting his two known-to-the-public relationships to see if they overlapped & if he as cheating on Medrick Manderly with his (at the time of recording & upload) current fiance who is also Medrick’s younger cousin. The video essayist decided there wasn't overlap, but people still bring "cousin-gate" up
Aegon completely washed his hands of the Targaryen family business & sold his shares to Rhaenyra (who is married to Harwin in this AU) as soon as he was old enough to touch his own account. What did he pursue instead? The life of an influencer. He mostly vlogged before a video of him attempting to cook for his girlfriend ( @emilykaldwen's Abby) with the help of "his bros" (Yorick's 2 oldest sons, Stannis & Baldric, & Ella's son Griffith) got super popular & he pivoted to a group channel with His Bros that slowly morphed into a bunch of variety content centered around several long-running jokes
It is from this group channel that Yorick's second well-known internet appearance comes: he was one of the first people they got to agree to let Baldric interview them about something they happen to be an expert in, with the whole bit being Baldric Philomena Cunking the whole interview. Yorick immediately figured out what was going on, & met Baldric on his own level in such a deadpan way that he made Baldric break character.
Shireen runs a non-profit with her mom, & is largely an unproblematic & well-regarded figure in the public eye. She has, unfortunately, been "adopted" by the girlbloggers because of her soft, pink, feminine aesthetic & penchant for having fawns on a lot of things she owns. This turned into Rhea 2 having a long, drawn-out fight with the person spearheading all these people being weird about her mom.
After a really nasty breakup with her (rebound) girlfriend & several follow-up minor inconveniences, Rhea 2 packs her dog up in her car & simply runs away from home. She doesn't stop driving until she runs out of gas on the outskirts of the Stark property. She rebounds from her rebound with Cregan, but he's shockingly normal & just genuinely fun to be around so the relationship actually sticks. Which is surprising given her whole family showed up at his house as soon as her phone had a charge & they could find out where she was, but if that didn't scare him off then that just means he's a keeper, right?
