i honestly think the one piece live action has great actors and the designs are as faithful as they can get to the source material under the constraints of netflix and sanitised media, but its biggest weakness is in the writing and how the writer just does not seem to understand luffy or his motives very well
which is a shame because watching iñaki godoy during interviews, he's so full of life and is already embodying luffy in so many ways, but the writing just fails him there
i hate how they've written luffy's criteria for his nakama to be them knowing how to fight good, because it's such a disservice to luffy's emotional intelligence. his crew knowing how to fight is great, yes, but that isn't his primary reason for recruiting them.
he chose zoro after watching zoro be good to rika and eating the sugary rice ball because rika made it for him even though it got thrown and stepped in the ground. he wanted nami because nami's heart showed itself to rescue him and zoro from buggy even when it actively sabotaged nami's own plans. he already liked usopp because of yasopp but watching usopp persistently try to be kaya's friend and being kind to the three kids really sold him for luffy on top of his braveness. luffy only decided he wanted sanji after watching sanji feed gin even when he wasn't suppose to, because sanji is kind.
luffy likes them because they're good and brave people who choose to do what's right even if it comes to the cost of themselves. he saw their heart and decided they're his people, not because they fought good
