I have a headcanon that the Skittles and Twizzlers on board The Hail Mary were put there per Carl's request.
Just the mental image of Carl watching Grace get transported after being sedated. A man, who prior to that moment, his most vivid memory consists of them finding world changing discoveries with plywood, duck tape, and copious amounts of sour skittles. A man who he associates with the exhilarating feeling of wonder and life. A teacher teaching, a scientist finding, a man living.
But suddenly, that's not his most vivid memory. Suddenly, what first comes to mind when he thinks of Dr. Ryland Grace is the image of him running away, of chasing him through the compound, of the look on his face when they do inevitably catch up to him. He can't hear the excited laughter of the previous memories without them eliciting the desperate pleas for life.
I wonder if he ever gets to see the videos. How would he feel if he knew that his name was the first one that Grace remembers. Foggy like the thing he misses most about earth.
Genuinely, can't stop thinking about how his name is Carl, like the fog that covers San Francisco is named Karl, and Grace misses the fog. I'm gonna be ill.

do you guys ever think about how foxes are good at climbing trees and how grace's first instinct when he was about to be forcefully sedated was to climb the counters
one thing from the phm book that didn't quite make it into the movie, quite understandably so but saddens me nonetheless, is just how much ryland was attached to ilyukhina. they became friends on stratt's vat, although it wasn't explicitly shown through the flashbacks. when he sees rocky's ship the first thing he thinks about is how ilyukhina would be jumping around and cheering about it. he constantly refers to how she had this bright smile and could make anyone crack a laugh with her jokes. even yao. when ryland first meets rocky and needs to go to sleep because he's been awake for two days, he immediately thinks about how ilyukhina would have powered through and stayed hours and hours and hours with him without needing to sleep because of how ecstatic she would have been. while he doesn't mention yao as much, ilyukhina is a constant. he remembers her as this smiling, wild beam of light. they were close. they were friends. and he has to deal with the fact that when he gave discovered her body and gave her this joke of a burial, he couldn't even remember the smile he loved so much.
One of the things that they didn't get into in the movie Project Hail Mary but was so emotionally poignant for me in the book is that it really was a last and only hope, and they partially destroyed Earth just to send the spaceship off.
The breeding of the astrophage to make fuel for the spaceship took so much energy that Eva Stratt paved over half of the Sahara desert, causing the weather to change in Africa and Europe. She blew up Antarctica to speed up global warming so they wouldn't die of cold before the probes could return. Stratt is playing supervillain with the Earth in the hopes that at least half of humanity would survive. After sending the three astronauts to certain death, her job is to keep humanity together for long enough to save the sun.
I think it adds a lot to her decision to send Grace away. Yes, it was cruel, but she knows what is coming for her and perhaps many of the people on the Hail Mary project. She is going to hold Earth and humanity together for decades, as people blame her for destruction and as nations in all likelihood go to war over scarce resources. Then, even if they succeed, she will probably be vilified or even executed for what she did.
Stratt is standing in the wreckage of Earth, knowing she'll live and die in infamy. She sent Grace off knowing that if he succeeded, he'd be remembered forever as a hero. She tore the Earth apart so he could save it.

"Me?" she said. "Doesn't matter. Once the Hail Mary launches, my authority ends. I'll probably be put on trial by a bunch of pissed-off governments for abuse of power. Might spend the rest of my life in jail."...
"Are you at all concerned about that?"
She shrugged, "We all have to make sacrifices. If I have to be the world's whipping boy to secure our salvation, then that's my sacrifice to make."
"You have a strange logic to you," I said.
"Not really. When the alternative is death to your entire species, things are very easy. No moral dilemmas, no weighing what's best for whom. Just a single-minded focus on getting this project working."
*the novel is First Person POV of Ryland Grace
(and yes she says she won't be in charge anymore after the launch but I feel like they'll leave her in charge because no one else wants to so she'll actually be done after saving the sun. The movie supports this. And the fact that Earth saves the sun in the novel tells me our girl held everything together because I don't feel like anyone else could)

Rewatching and realized that during Sign of the Times, we all hear her singing the lyrics and contextualize it with the knowledge that Grace is sent to space. Just stop your crying, have the time of your life; we can meet again somewhere, somewhere far away from here. But while I'm sure Eva knows in the back of her mind that Grace could be sent to space, it's a far off enough possibility that she wouldn't be thinking about it. If we really want to hear it as *her* in that moment, I think she was thinking more about her being sent to prison for the rest of her life after launch and Grace going on without her. Remember everything will be alright. We can meet again somewhere. Somewhere far away from here.
thinking about the parallel of "it must be hard- asking everyone to.. yknow.." "It actually isnt." to the scene of stratt practically crying watching ryland climb all over the room to get away from the doctors. "sit down and we do it differently"
the phm team seeing grace everywhere. carl seeing a yellow jacket in a crowd, wincing. lokken arguing with a colleague or a spirited researcher. she’ll probably die a decade before she finds out if her centrifuge worked as intended. dimitri drinking alone on the vatt. grace’s place at the bar empty. his lab station and little supply closet office abandoned. his apartment mouldering. marrissa and carl making eye contact at the diner he frequented, both there for grace, never realizing who the other is. did he ever tell marrissa where he went? did he ever tell carl about his friend of over fifteen years? carl moving to california after the launch- did he grow up there? or did he move there chasing grace’s ghost. stratt in jail, still getting his emails, his mail. junk coupons from san francisco getting forwarded across the ocean to a french prison so she can look at his name on the cheap shiny paper. she could probably tell someone to sort through it and only send along anything important. she doesnt. a rainbow shines over the baikonur cosmodrome. no ones there to see it.
