Star Trek + Social Commentary (context in the captions)
THIS is what the original Star Trek TV series and films were about. Not just about blowing up things in space and snazzy lens flares with a side order of casual sexism -.-‘.
dude do you know how many people I have pissed off by saying the exact same thing?
Not enough people.
THIS IS WHAT STAR TREK IS TRULY ABOUT
I'm probably going to piss off some people, but no insult is meant here. People don't have problems with these messages being the focus, never had, because they were intertwined within the story.
Let's take the first one into consideration. It's an episode of Next Generation that always cuts a little deep for me. She feels this way because it was when she fell for Riker that she embraced these other feelings that she had been ignoring for her own safety. It's handled with nuance, and how the episode ends is just too real.
It's not the message, it's the nuance in which the message is intertwined with the story. Most writers for these scripts seemed to have forgotten how to show, instead of tell. The message that they want to get across becomes "ham fisted," instead of nuanced.
I shall continue to love watching Star Trek. I've always been a Next Gen Trekkie, but I plan to expand it to the other Star Treks because I'm missing out on the other ones so much.
Keep on writing your stories and telling your message. It will still resonate with someone.
