I have found great stuff on Thrift books. The Mary Frances guide to knitting, a How To Train Your Dragon book my son wanted, a book of crochet patterns for toy food. I'm waiting for a decent price on the Outlander knitting pattern book. It's the place to start.
In Northanger Abbey it's mentioned that Catherine's father is a priest with two parishes and therefore they're doing well financially.
My question is 1) how exactly are you making money from a parish? Is it like a landowner/landlord thing and he's getting paid for letting the people live and farm there? And 2) how do you manage to fullfil your duties as a priest? He has to hold twice the amount of sermons and take care of his people's emotional and physical needs (as per Sir Thomas' reasoning why Edmund has to move out once he's a priest).
I know this is different from what you normally cover, I've just been thinking about this for the last days and can't find a definitive answer anywhere.
This is a great question! My answers come from the David Shapard Annotated Jane Austen editions, the historical book What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew by Daniel Pool, and some online research, particularly here.
Mr. Morland is actually a very special case, he is the patron of his own living. That means he is both Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins, he bestowed his living upon himself. This is a big deal because it means that James Morland can inherit his father's livings:
A living, of which Mr. Morland was himself patron and incumbent, of about four hundred pounds yearly value, was to be resigned to his son as soon as he should be old enough to take it (Ch 16)
whereas when Dr. Grant dies in Mansfield Park, his living will default back to Sir Thomas.
Now, to your questions:
1. How do you make money?
The income is derived from tithes, that is a percentage of what each farmer in the parish makes from their production. They also made income from the glebe, which is land attached to the parsonage. Mr. Collins has some fields of his own that he is anxious to show his visitors and Charlotte keeps chickens: that is the glebe. This land was usually donated to the church by the principal landowner (Lady Catherine) and it improved the income of the living. It could either be rented out or farmed by the pastor.
Tithes were 10% of all production, but there was a difference, a rector (Mr. Collins) received tithes on everything grown, while a vicar (Mr. Elton) only collected greater tithes, that is on wheat, oats, and barely but not fruit eggs or animals. This may explain why Mrs. Bates was so poor and why Mr. Elton had to marry for money, their income was only that of a vicar. (for more information click here)
Also, if a landowner and rector wasn't careful, their tenants might be cheating them on tithes, which is why Lucy Steele muses, anxious that his tithes should be raised to the utmost when she hears that Colonel Brandon will give Edward a living. She would have made sure that every grain of wheat was counted!
Now to answer your second question...
2. How do you manage your duties?
The duties were sermons every Sunday, Easter, and Christmas. Baptising, buring, and marrying parishioners. Rectors also were in charge of the parish poor funds most of the time, which was an early kind of welfare. Elizabeth laughs at Mr. Collin's "kind intention of christening, marrying, and burying his parishioners whenever it were required" because that it literally his job.
As for second livings, we need to get into the third category of clergyman, a curate. A curate (Charles Hayter) is a man without a living who works for a rector or vicar. They were paid about Ā£50/year and therefore could not marry without help. They sometimes lived in the parsonage of the living they served, but not always. Basically, their lives sucked and they were really hoping for a living someday.
Henry Tilney has a curate while also living at his parish, which is why he can spend time in Bath without neglecting his duties. You also could install a curate in a second (or third!) living and they would do the pastoral duties in your place. Before the system was reformed, some clergymen held multiple livings which they rarely visited and used the church only as a passive income. Which is what Henry Crawford assumes Edmund will do:
"Seven hundred a year is a fine thing for a younger brother; and as of course he will still live at home, it will be all for hisĀ menusĀ plaisirs; and a sermon at Christmas and Easter, I suppose, will be the sum total of sacrifice.ā (Ch 23)
But a clergyman ought to actually live in his parish and be an example of morality, as well as an active participant in the charity of the church. The admirable Mr. Weston in Agnes Grey by Anne Brontƫ, reads with an old widow and is constantly out helping the poor. The vain Mr. Hatfield, the actual rector, does not attend to his parish and rather than helping the widow, instead scolds her for not walking to church with severe arthritis and reprimands her for having doubts in her faith. In Austen's novels, Henry Tilney, Edward Ferrars, and Edmund Bertram seem to be actually doing their jobs, while Dr. Grant, Mr. Collins, and Mr. Elton seem more interested in other things (in order, food, sucking up to Lady Catherine, and wealth).
Now the funny thing about Edmund is that he was always meant to hold two livings and while Thornton Lacey and Mansfield parishes are very close, he cannot live full time at both. I guess Sir Thomas and Edmund justify this to themselves by supposing that Edmund could split his time or something, but it has always smacked of hypocrisy to me.

Good Tier:
William Price: athletic, cares about his sister a lot (good sign), and gives good presents. Heās only nineteen in the story which is why he has room to improve.
Captain Harville: Obviously
Mr. Morland: dude isnāt even on page, but in my head Mrs. Morland enjoyed making all ten of those children.
Colonel Fitzwilliam: I think heād be good, but not awesome.
Fitzwilliam Darcy: heās a bit stiffā¦ I think it might take some time for him to get good at it
Charles Bingley: I get the feeling heād be on a race to the end, and maybe not the best communicator at first. Will improve.
Mr. Gardiner: Just because heās awesome and seems to respect women
Captain Benwick: poetry and passion!
Robert Martin: seems like a pretty romantic guy, also works on a farm so probably athletic.
John Willoughby: Mostly because of experience, but he is also pretty passionate. Heās also super hot, Miss Grey knew what she was getting into. But this guy can only go downhill from here.
Reginald DeCourcy: Heās a sweetheart, an occasionally dumb sweetheart
Mr. Bennet: Is he lazy in most domains of life? Yes. But Mrs. Bennet wasnāt just trying for that heir, Iām telling you folks. Maybe heās just trying to make her unable to talk š
Mediocre but can improve tier:
George Knightley: I donāt have a great reason but Iām putting him here. Donāt worry, John will give him some tips.
Frank Churchill: Heās got passion, but heās so darn selfish and doesnāt seem to send that much time thinking about Janeās feelings
Edward Ferrars: I just see him being a nervous wreak the first few times, itāll get better
James Morland: Dude, Iām just disappointed with you in general. Being led by lust, not protecting your sister. I hope you grow a lot before you try to get engaged again.
Charles Musgrove: could be good, but Mary never seems to appreciate the effort he puts in so he kind of gave up
Tom Bertram: Selfish, never has to try for anything, but he did reform so maybe he can get better here too
Edmund Bertram: Repressed and selfish. He needs to actually start listening to what women say if heās going to improve and there is a whole book of him doing exactly the oppositeā¦

James Rushworth: Maria was not impressed at all, despite how much ātallerā he was

John Thorpe: Selfish and he never shuts up. I have trouble imaging him getting a woman to sleep with him without paying her.
George Wickham: selfish and good looking, heās not doing any work. He thinks you should be honoured to sleep with him.
Robert Ferrars: selfish and not even good looking. There is nothing here. Lucy did not win people.
Mr. Elton: selfish, full of himself, and low emotional intelligence
Mr. Woodhouse: I canāt even imagine, if he didnāt have children Iād say he was a virgin
Mr. Collins: The woman he is trying to please is not his wife.
Mr. Elliot: cruel to his first wife and not even handsome!
Sir Walter Elliot: I donāt think any part of his personality would tend toward being aĀ āgiverā, however, if you like mirrorsā¦

No Data: We interviewed Lady Bertram for information on Sir Thomas, but she confessed that with full consent, she has always fallen asleep during sex. Given her personality, we decided that this information has no bearing on Sir Thomasās abilities. She did say that giving birth was,Ā āVery disagreeable.ā
Criteria: In the domain of F/M sex, communication is key, so we need a man who is willing to listen to what women say. Also, selfishness is obviously a negative trait when it comes to a happy sexual partner of either gender. Some of this is just vibes, but I think there is a fair amount of canon information about how much men respect women, especially their sisters.Ā

what if public libraries were open late every night so that:
- children and teens who cant get home until a later time have a safe, warm, well lit, populated area to socialize, charge devices, rest, etc
- children and teens have a safe place to go to stay away from danger
- people who have jobs that take up most of the day would still have time ANY DAY OF THE WEEK to go use the libraries facilities (printing, computers, etc)
This is exactly what public libraries are trying to achieve - public libraries as a third place is a whole thing - itās just that the funding isnāt there (yet).
Iām going to apologize if this post comes off as sounding very aggressive, but having just been through one of the most stressful experiences of my entire career in libraries:Ā
if you want this, you need to be at your local community government meetings. you need to be talking to your representatives.Ā you need to be out there Lobbying.
Just a few weeks ago, my library, me, my coworkers, we had to write letters, send emails, make phone calls, speak at council meetings, just to begĀ our aldermen to give us our usual funding. Which they didnāt even give to us last year.Ā Losing last yearās funding forced us to cut staff, hours, and all of our databases.Ā If weād lost this yearās funding? two positions would have been gone and we would have likely had to close on Saturdays.Ā On Saturdays.Ā The day of the week most of yāall working M-F jobs actually have time to go to the fucking library.
And do you want to know how much money we were asking? We were asking for an increase of approximately 13 cents a person.

ACROSS AN ENTIRE YEAR.
No one seems to understand how libraries are funded.Ā Itās not just Free Stuff.Ā Itās your tax dollarsĀ being paid back into your community.Ā Itās crowdfunding.Ā The highest cost anyone in my community pays for the library a year is approximately $250.Ā Divide that up.Ā Thatās just $4 a week.Ā Thatās less than a coffee.Ā Itās the equivalent of purchasing about 10 hardcover books a year.Ā For that price, you could have access to every book that has ever been written, a place to go thatās not a bar, programs for kids, teens, and adults, educated staff that can help you find the answers to your questions, and so much more.
You want these late-night libraries?Ā You want all this stuff?Ā Start fighting for it.Ā Start showing up.Ā Start making phone calls.Ā Itās not going to come out of thin air.Ā Start fighting to erase the idea that taxes = evil.Ā Start fighting to spread the understanding that taxes are what help us build a better society.
Make sure the people who represent you know that you want this.Ā That this is where you want your tax dollars to go.Ā That this is what you want them to support.Ā That you are willingĀ to see your tax bill go up a few more dollars for this.
Because otherwise?Ā None of this is going to happen.Ā Libraries are going to keep cutting their opening hours.Ā Keep cutting staff.Ā Keep cutting programs and databases and collections.
We NEEDĀ your support, and we need more than just a post on Tumblr.Ā We need to see people show up and speak out.Ā
