I’m getting really sick and tired of this flakey-fake, so-called ‘inclusive’ bullsh*t coming from every corner of the LGBTQIA community, and beyond. I don’t mean the people who DO reach out, who educate, who point you in the right direction, and who actually welcome new people to their community.
I mean kind of people who preach about being accepting, welcoming, and inclusive, but who immediately turn into vapid a**holes the second someone else comes along who isn’t ’______’ the same way they are.
I guess they just forget that everyone actually, seriously is different, and that it’s OKAY to have differences within a community of people??
Because, seriously, look: people can have similar or shared experiences, but everyone experiences them differently. You might like the same something, but the way you like it or why you like it can be different. You might dislike the same something as someone else, but for an entirely different and/or personal reason. You might have a completely different reason for everything you do/say/like, which—weird!—is kind of what happens when people have different personalities and lives.
The major reason I think that it’s important for people to remember these things is because I keep seeing these people—often the younger and/or newer people to the communities—looking for a group/identity/sexuality/faith to belong to and feeling like they can’t be a part of it because there’s a bunch of people calling them ‘fake’ or ‘liars’ because they don’t experience something the exact same way they do.
Can I just ask: What the f*ck?
I mean, just as an example:
A gay guy can like all the men, like woo baby wow yes. A gay guy can like only transmen, hot damn they connect better than anyone else they’ve tried to date. An asexual person can be sex-repulsed for reasons they do not have to explain or share with you. An asexual (or aromantic but still under the Ace umbrella) person can fall in love and adore cuddles and hand-holding.
Are these guys gay? Are those people ace? YES!
Are they the same? Do they experience their sexualities in the exact same way? NO!
BECAUSE THEY’RE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
So, please. Please please please please. If you are someone who’s turning people away from a community (that you don’t own btw) because you don’t feel like someone is ’____’ enough, because they don’t express or experience their gender/sexuality/faith/etc the exact same way you do…
Please try to take a moment, think about their circumstances, consider what you know and don’t know, think about what shaped your identity in this community, think about who welcomed you, and try to be that person to them. Help them. Teach them. Include them.
Practice what you preach.
