like, a child that’s in trouble all the time, frequently skipping school, getting caught doing crimes? that’s a kid that desperately needs literally any positive attention. that kid needs help. obviously.

I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree, the main reason being: in most circumstances when a person makes a mistake, it does not feel like a mistake in the moment. It feels like the right option, or the only option - because if they knew it was a mistake, they would have the foresight to not do it.

The same is true for kids. If a twelve-year-old decides to disobey their parents and go out with friends instead of studying for an important test, they are deliberately getting themself into trouble. The thing is, in this scenario the twelve-year-old doesn’t understand why the rule to study before socializing exists. They think they’ll be fine without studying, or they’ll study later. They break the rule because it feels like the correct thing to do.

That is a perfectly age-appropriate and low-stakes mistake for a kid to make, and it involves saying “No, I don’t want to listen to Mom and Dad. I want to make my own decision.” That’s the kind of healthy trouble I believe the OP is talking about. No harm is done, except potentially to the kid’s test score. It’s a live-and-learn moment: something that all people need sometimes, especially children.
