I believe that Ash losing the Indigo League was one of the best writing decisions ever made, and I'd like to take some time to talk about it.

Like, first of all, it could reasonably be considered a "plot twist." Do you know how rare it is for main characters to lose? It's one of those things that makes me wish I was alive for Pokemania. I cannot imagine how exciting it would have been to be keeping up with the Pokemon League live every week as a kid.

And like all good plot twists, it's not done for shock, it's done because it makes sense! Ash is not the best, and you can figure that out before the tournament starts. Beyond the procrastination arc before the league arc, the number one indicator of this is Charizard. It's disobedience arc has not been resolved at this point, and while it came through against Aerodactyl or against Blaine, it's inconsistent. Ash's loss may seem underwhelming, but it's an important character moment for Ash (and Charizard.) It shows the audience that he's only just started on his road to become a Pokemon Master.

But beyond the reasons that pertain to Ash specifically, it's also just... realistic. Any tournament, no matter how many contestants, will have one (1) winner. Ash could have had a team of fully evolved, fully trained Pokemon, and lose to someone else with the same. Everyone in this tournament probably went in thinking "I'm the very best, I'm going to win it all." Everyone is the main character of their own story. And almost all of them lost, no matter how disappointing it was. Because that's how tournaments work. And... it's fine. Ash still had a party in Pallete Town. Ash still earned 8 badges. Ash continues to be a Pokemon Trainer. You don't have to be the best to play, and I think that's a very valuable message to send to the viewers of your show and, ultimately, the players of your game.
