In the pale Moonlight

“If you asked my SIX YEAR OLD self she would probably say no, but uh… yeah,” Hayden made a face at her own words. “Not really, no. Moved around a little, I guess. Been here for M O S T of my life, though. — Why?”

“Your six year old thinks noses are an aberration?” Skye wondered with a hint of amusement in her voice. “Okay... no it’s just there’s something incredibly familiar about you but I can’t quite put my nose on it.”

“of course. do we have to make an appointment or…?” 

carter was amused by her response - she was sassy and it was refreshing. “how sweet of you. but you don’t have to worry that pretty little head of yours. i’m pretty and smart.” 

“No just drop by tomorrow evening” She tilted her head and cocked an eyebrow skeptically.  “That remains to be seen. But I suppose you are on the right track since you did hire me after all.”

“smart gal.” wyatt confirmed, cracking a smile at the girl’s joke. “well, it depends. every beer you could possibly think of — and if you’re feeling fancy, i can whip up some kind of cocktail. make these montana mountains feel like a sunny tropical island with a piña colada?”

bitchy or not, it felt a little inappropriate…

“hm. it sounds like you found the perfect job.” which was wonderful. it seemed to be such a hard task these days - she was not even sure if she was 100% happy with her choices. 

the brunette reached out to squeeze her hand for a moment. “lilyana. nice to meet you, skye. i just moved here, so we haven’t.” as for posing… “i would, but i have to warn you. you’d totally regret it.”

“I guess you could say I’m lucky enough to be able to make a living doing something I’m passionate about.” It was not a privilege afforded to many, let alone those living in small towns. “Hey I’ll be the judge of that, but I highly doubt I will regret it.” She tilted her head curiously when the other girl introduced herself. “That’s a beautiful name, I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before. It’s a pleasure to meet you!” She offered a warm grin. “In that case, welcome to Fort Belmount... what brings you here, of all places?”

The response she received made her laugh, reminding her of her thought process months after the incident had happened. Remi should’ve punched that boy. “I was young, didn’t know any better. Stayed with him for a little while after that, but if it helps, I did end up dumping him.” And she was a better person for it. There was no helping some men. “I appreciate the offer, though. Maybe I’ll save it for the next boy that tries to hurt my feelings.”

“Deal. I’m Skye and apparently now will be your personal undertaker calling card for any guy... or gal that tries to treat you wrong,” she laughed. In truth the woman seemed vaguely familiar, but Skye never forgot a face, so she knew they couldn’t have met directly before. “At least you grew from it, not everyone can say the same.” 

“I just got here. I haven’t had a chance to screw anything up yet. So, I can’t be the reason you’re giving me that face. What’s up?”

“It’s a long story. It’s actually old news but... ugh, today brought some stuff back to the forefront of my mind.”

The blonde tilted her head, confused at the other woman’s words. She did brush her hair this morning, didn’t she? Yes, and that wouldn’t have been it either, considering she mentioned her face. “Please don’t tell me it’s my nose. An ex once said I needed a nose job years ago and I’m still insecure about it.”

“you look like you could use a drink.” wyatt commented. “no offense.” with a slight grin, the brunette leaned against the opposite side of the bar. “can i get ya’ somethin’?”

Skye was pulled out of her reverie, and couldn’t help but wisecrack. “Well you know, according to chemists alcohol is a solution, so as long as science is validating my life choices... why not? Whaddya got?”

Kieran’s gaze dropped back to her laptop in an effort to keep the other from seeing the all too familiar red tint rise up from her neck and crawl up her face. She let out a small chuckle, a bid for some time to sort out her words properly before attempting to speak them. The deputy glanced back over at the woman with a genuine smile, “Thank you, it’s not everyday one is told their face is memorable in such a fashion. Based on the touch of technicality to your description, I take it you have a background in art?” She focused on her curiosity to diminish the feeling of embarrassment.

"And she’s smart too!” Skye mused playfully, though the comment was truthful. The other woman probably had an attention for detail paired with an observant nature and a solid capacity for deduction. She did notice the blush, but chose not to comment on it, as much as it endeared her further. “I’m a photographer, and I’m lucky enough to say it’s my primary source of income.” Not everyone with an artistic background was fortunate so as to be able to make a living from their passion. “I do mean it though, I’ve been experimenting with moonlit photography and you’d be perfect if you were interested.” She inched her chair a little closer to the table that was right beside her own. “May I ask what you’re working on that has you so absorbed?”

“— Do I have ANYTHING on my face?” the blonde questioned, suddenly quite paranoid that she had been sloppy during lunch.

“Nothing that you need to be concerned about. Unless that nose isn’t supposed to be there?,” she joked. “It’s just... have you been living in Fort Belmount your whole life?”

“oh.” now that was even more confusing, because she kind of reacted like a bitch. it was what she seemed to do all the damn time since she came here. “no. never. i always let my friends have the spotlight.” not like her parents would’ve allowed it anyway. “but, uh… thank you.” 

As far as Skye had been concerned, the other girl’s reaction hadn’t been bitchy, just suspicious which was kind of normal given a total stranger had been staring. “Everybody and everything shines at one point or another, even if it’s only when they’re alone. I’m a photographer so I guess my life’s mission is to capture those instants. I’m not really interested in who has the spotlight or not.” She held her hand out in a friendly gesture. “I’m Skye, I don’t believe we’ve met... would you consider posing for me sometime?”

“thanks. i’m glad to hear that.” it was the first time that he allowed someone to take pictures after he changed just about everything. the pictures were important to him. 

“must be a handsome guy.” 

Skye wasn’t lying. In fact the pictures would be ready very soon for a first review. “Are you free some time tomorrow to come by and take a look?” She smirked a little as he mused about a ‘handsome guy’. “Too bad he was as dumb as he was pretty,” she quipped. “Luckily for you, I’m around to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes I saw firsthand.”
