hey atem let's go bowling
#so it turns out #bowling is SO ancient #that the ancient egyptians that the ancient egyptians considered ancient would have considered it ancient. #and that is NOT a typo. #ok so maybe the iconic bowling alley carpet design took a few more thousand years but what's a little anachronism with friends! #priest seto #<- he's just standing there. Menacingly (x)
#<prev. I mean we have so few surviving artifacts from ancient Egyptian LIFE (as opposed to funerary artifacts) #that we can't actually prove that they DIDNT have funky colorful bowling carpets #they had hella dyes they could have done it if they wanted to #also a huge fan of mahad exhausted expression. overworked babysitter (x)
#absolutely love how atem throws his whole body into it (x)
#I'm crying this is exactly the type of Atem content I need #Mahad's face #Whatever Mana's yelling in distress #Priest Seto just...standing there lol #And those two in the back #I bet despite the full body lunge Atem still got a strike (x)
#can't take his ass anywhere!!! (x)
#look at him GO!!!!! (x)
#atem eats shit and dies while bowling (x)
#this just in #the pharaoh eats shit on the bowling lanes #stay tuned for more information at 6 (x)
#Atem is going to fall flat on his face but i believe in his flying ball's ability to knock down all of the pins #thus making him win on the technicality they didn't make that against the rules [yet] (x)
#ayo whatās going on back there #jumping around #mahad looks embarrassed to be around atem LMAO (x)
#congrats Pharaoh that's the worse anyone's ever done it #...Set why are you cosplaying as a statue in the BG there (x)
#can you believe chapter one told us he'd never be balling (x)
JONOUCHI IS EVERYWHERE!!!
i used to watch the original yugioh so much when i was 9-13, and i decided to rewatch it and it's so peak!! it's so good and bad at the same time i luv it...
my favorite part was animating/editing the characters into the show's backgrounds and coming up with a correlation to a part in the anime for every scene with the characters in the background! it only goes up to battle city since that's where i've rewatched up to so far
also imma make a post for context on the first battle city scene later, we all know weevil is cryin cuz he lost "his queen" but i think rex deserved at LEAST his rarest card back because espa roba literally cheated imma square up with mokuba for this blunder
low poly summer āļø
throwback to when I was still pretty new to yugioh and I wanted to look something up about Valon and I didn't realize I'd accidentally clicked on the YGOTAS fanwiki instead of the normal one and I was thoroughly and completely bewildered when I read "he is known to have a very large penis"

getting used to drawing yugioh
this yugioh scene made me think, hey, what if jonouchi gets to be the guardian of the puzzle. and since i liked the idea, i made a drawing of it, but made it dragonshipping kekw
aNOTHER song I'm picturing a yugioh pmv to, definitely puzzleshipping in some capacity this time lmao
Taxi Cab by Twenty One Pilots
I wanna fall inside your ghost And fill up every hole inside my mind And I want everyone to know That I am half a soul divided Sometimes we will die, and sometimes we will fly away Either way, you're by my side until my dying days And if I'm not there and I'm far away I said don't be afraid I said don't be afraid We're going home I wanna strip myself of breath A breathless piece of death I've made for you A mortal rotting piece of song Will help me carry on, but at least you heard Sometimes we will die, and sometimes we will fly away Either way, you're by my side until my dying days And if I'm not there and I'm far away I said don't be afraid I said don't be afraid We're going home So, the hearse ran out of gas A passenger person grabbed a map And the driver inside it contrived a new route to save the past And checked his watch and grabbed a cab, a beautifully plain taxi cab A cab, had a cleared-out back, and two men started to unpack Driving once again, but now this time there were three men And then I heard one of them say, "I know the night will turn to gray I know the stars will start to fade when all the darkness fades away We had to steal him from his fate so he could see another day" Then I cracked open my box Someone must have picked the lock A little light revealed the spot where my fingernails had fought Then I pushed it open more, pushing up against the door Then I sat up off the floor and found the breath I was searching for Then there were three men up front, all I saw were backs of heads And then I asked, "Am I alive and well, or am I dreaming dead?" And then one turned around to say, "We're driving toward the morning sun Where all your blood is washed away, and all you did will be undone" I said don't be afraid I said don't be afraid
(sidenote, there's a lot of variations online for some of the lines but I listened to a live version and I'm quite confident the words are "at least you heard," and I'm like 85% confident it's "rotting" not "writing" as some put it)
like ??? the first two verses (their bond... being the same soul... Yugi giving all of himself for Yami) + the chorus are almost perfect for them, the whole metaphor of the cab and casket (something carrying Yami/Atem to the afterlife... Puzzle and Yugi)
even the "three men" feels relevant, either with Yugi + Yami + Atem, or Yugi + Yami/Atem + Yami Bakura perhaps??? or I guess in this the guy in the casket is Yami/Atem so perhaps it's Yugi + Yami Bakura + Malik ??? or perhaps the guy in the casket is Atem and up front is Yugi + Yami + Yami Bakura. or maybe Mana and Mahad are there too (I think the ending of "hopes dreams fears" is influencing that idea for me) or maybe even the guy in the casket is Yugi/Yami/Atem and the three up front are Anzu, Jounouchi and Honda SO MANY POSSIBILITIES. or maybe we lean a little more into what's already here and make them some of the Egyptian gods. or even the god cards lmfao
"contrived a new route to save the past" + "we had to steal him from his fate so he could see another day" ā Atem had to be sealed away so he could return one day and finally defeat Zorc
cracked open the box ā the Puzzle being solved
lots to picture I love it

was really craving those writer brain worms today but instead I sat down and fumbled around with a video editor and I'm realizing this would be extremely cumbersome the way I'm doing it
My specific issue with what yugioh does with Kaiba is like- okay the conflict is between *Kaiba*, the version of him that Gozaburo created and *Seto*, the version of him that he wanted to be, the version of him Mokuba still sees and wants back, the version of him Gozaburo tried to kill. And this is an interesting conflict that runs through Death-T and DK in the manga ending with this certainly not being the same version of Seto but one who clearly loves his brother and shows it. And BC is. An okay continuation of that. Itās him finally finding closure with the ghost of his father, letting go of Kaiba, the CEO with an undying need to Win At Any Cost. Heās able to accept defeat and exit the narrative with his brother in tow. And yeah, heās still kinda a jackass, heās still prickly and bombastic, but he becomes the person he can actually be happy to be. The sort of person his brother missed so dearly.
And then he gets over his shit in VW. And then again in DOMA. Okay, fine I guess. He needed something to do I suppose. And then heās right back at square one in DSOD. Heās obsessive. He needs to win. He is actively kinda freaking out and neglecting Mokie. This is death-T Kaiba.
Thank you for such lovely comments on my fanfics!
If I could step in, however, and give my perspective on Kaiba's characterization from the POV of someone who really, really likes the guy--he is my favorite anime guy; he might even just really be my favorite character of all time--I think the discussions on Kaiba's characterization lately have been skating over a really key point.
I do want to caveat, before I really get into it, I'm not saying you HAVE to like him or even care about him. I am the first to admit he's a black hole who sucks in all the attention. But I don't agree with the idea that his characterization is thin, poorly written, or going backwards.
So -- the key point:
DSOD is a direct sequel to the manga. In this sense, anything that is anime-only (like Virtual World and DOMA) do not matter to Kaiba's characterization/character arc in DSOD. This is not to say our fanon writing of Kaiba can't draw on multiple sources, but rather to say "why is Kaiba like this in DSOD, when he was like that in DOMA?" is not the right question to ask. It's like saying "why is an apple an apple, when it could be an orange?" Not the same story!
So, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR HIS CHARACTERIZATION?
The manga, step by step, provides us with a very clear character arc for Kaiba, developed primarily through interactions with Atem--it is not about becoming nicer, or friendlier, or less intense, and it is not about returning to the Seto of old, the one Mokuba misses. (I've had my share of traumas; I have dealt with grieving the person I used to be, and knowing I will never be that person again).
It is about learning how to understand and value the power of connections and placing your faith in others. It is literally the power of friendship.
DSOD Kaiba is not a return to Death-T Kaiba, because the mind crush in Death-T does not cure him of his obsessiveness, his intensity, or his drive. The mind crush gives Kaiba time to reflect and begin repairing himself after a period of substantial trauma and pain. We see him continuing to reflect (yes, Kaiba reflects) over the course of the manga.
After Death-T, during DK, Kaiba wonders if Yuugi (Atem) won because he had someone to protect, and if having someone to protect makes you stronger.
In Battle City, he poses the question to Atem again: what will friendship mean when you're forced to fight each other? Will it mean anything? (The pier duel between Yuugi and Jou answers this question for him).
We see it again in the Battle City finale. Atem himself recognizes that his friendship with Kaiba is something unique and different--"friends... rivals... where is the line?" Right before Atem's duel with Yami Malik, Kaiba challenges Atem to prove that their friendship is real by taking his card and adding it to his final deck--and Atem, in turn, places the card in his deck without looking at it, telling Kaiba that HE has faith in HIM. That he DOES see him as a friend. The connection between them is real, and it matters to both of them.
(Hilariously, in the manga, Isis even says -- we will see if the power of friendship can defeat an evil god.) And, because the logic of Yugioh is card games, Atem does prove, in the battle against Yami Malik, that friendship is real, and placing your faith in your friends is a form of power. Kaiba recognizes this.
In short, Kaiba, over the course of the manga, continually questions the nature of friendship, the value, the importance of it--through his connection to Atem--and in the end, sees its power.
Then Atem dies, and--in a critical difference between the manga and the anime--Kaiba is not in attendance at the Ceremonial Duel. He does not see die.
And if we know anything about Kaiba's history, it's that a lot of people who matter to him, for better or worse, die or abandon him: his parents die, his relatives abandon him his stepfather dies--and now, faced with the death of someone else who has mattered to him and changed his mind, he is not given the chance to say goodbye or achieve closure.
Kaiba's pursuit of Atem in DSOD is not about entirely about rivalry or beating Atem. True--it is framed through Kaiba wanting to duel Atem again. But more importantly, it is about feeling abandoned by the death of a friend, and it is about wanting closure for the death of someone you care about. He is not his same old Death-T self; he is not trying to destroy himself, Mokuba, or other people; he is not gloating or delighting in violence, murder, and sadism. He IS the same obsessive Kaiba as before, because the story never "cured" him or "fixed" these personality traits; crucially, he is also now a Kaiba who cares about friendship, and who feels that the friendship HE felt for someone has been betrayed (by death itself).
Of course he's mad--this guy who promised a road of battle that goes on forever (via their favorite card game) just fucking went and died on him!
DSOD capitalizes on the themes of the manga: it lets Kaiba prove that he's internalized what he learned from Atem, and that he believes in the power of friendship, ferociously, to the death. He sacrifices himself in the duel against Aigami to prove to Yuugi that the connection with Atem transcends and continues on beyond death--that if their faith in this friendship is strong enough, even in the face of death, Atem will come. Even Yuugi didn't believe, until Kaiba proves it to him: in both the English and Japanese versions of DSOD, Yuugi thanks Kaiba at the end.
Is Kaiba sort of a cool guy billionaire throughout all of this? Yes. Is he a good billionaire? No. In that respect he fucking sucks, and at no point does the narrative ever give us any indication that the story is about how a mean billionaire becomes a nice billionaire. Is he Yugioh's resident sexyman? Yes.
Does all of this change the fact that Kaiba's arc is learning and believing in the power of friendship, to the point that it's the literal climax of the DSOD? No.
Does the old Seto still exist? QUITE an interesting question; probably not. Tragedy, triumph; transformed by life, experience, trauma.
Are there many, many essays to write about what DSOD does to Kaiba's relationship with Mokuba, and whether or not it reinforces or undermines my argument here? Sure. I love thinking about this, as you know; I love all things Kaiba brothers, I love that their relationship is messy. Personally, I don't think it undermines the argument at all; in fact, it makes the whole story feel more human to me; it means DSOD is not a tidy moralistic message about friendship, but another step in a character's particular journey. It tells us that Kaiba is a flawed person (not a flawed character), and that the victory of connection, as evinced through his reunion with Atem, is complicated by what he left behind. DSOD is deliberately open-ended (whether or not Kaiba comes back or can't is UP TO YOU) and, in a sense, maybe it is asking US to have faith that the Kaiba brothers still care about each other (Kaiba still cares about Mokuba).
tl,dr; No one has to like kaiba. But he DOES have an arc. And it IS the power of friendship.
