Is superior to this...

(I know different versions of Gundam have a different song over the finale but we’re going with Meguriai)

Literally not a day goes by over the last two years that I do not think of Lalah singing Meguriai as Amuro drifts through space. I think that is literally everything.

Can you imagine the tragedy of this dialogue as you hear Lalah’s ghostly voice sings how she wishes to be with Amuro again as he whispers into the aether that when he dies that can be together again forever but that he cannot be with her now…

…because he actually has a reason to keep going again.

I’ve always pictured Mirai and Bright catching Amuro and pulling him into a hug. (Amuro was always the only son Bright ever loved.)

At the time of her death every one laments the loss of the “most talented new type ever” and about 14 years later Char remembers her as some one who could have mothered him a race of new types. (That is how I interpret Char’s infamous “she was like a mother to me” line).

But like,,, that isn’t Lalah, she liked swans and freedom and she sits in the afterlife waiting alone because it’s an after life she created.

For years after 9/11 we were constantly told “NEVER FORGET” and the idea was basically “keep feeling sad and afraid and especially ANGRY forever; don’t let time dull your emotional response like it’s naturally supposed to; continue to justify the injustices by feeling this way all the time.” And the 3000 deaths were constantly pointed to as this huge deal that justified any lengths to go to.

And then Covid hit. And there were several points during the height of the pandemic (because fun fact, according to the actual definitions of a pandemic, *it’s not technically over yet!* ) where we were having a 9/11’s worth of deaths every week or so. And suddenly 3000 deaths were not a big deal at all. Instead of being enough reason to go to war far away and strip us at home of many rights too, they weren’t even enough justification to make people wear a damn piece of fabric over their face.

3000 people died once and now the government can legally wiretap anyone without a warrant, and hold people at Gitmo under suspicion of terrorism (no need for due process)… 3000 people dying every week but we should all still be going out to brunch and concerts and who cares about the disabled and immunocompromised?

While that type of representation IS very important (especially now), I do feel a little weird about how that type of rep is hailed as the superior type. I know more trans people that are like Lee/Jax, only out to certain people and/or are still moding for the most part. So the idea of a character like Jax, who is very messy ON PURPOSE, being seen as lesser rep for not outwardly saying the T word and not transitioning on screen feels really... off-putting. It especially makes me concerned for trans spaces where people who are having complicated feelings towards their gender and presentation LIKE Jax may see the discourse as invalidating their transness.
