I have once again been denied access to a milling machine owned, housed, and (never) operated by the selfsame place that cuts my paychecks. Not only will they not let me train on it, they won’t let anyone train on it. Perfectly shiny, fully kitted Acer. Everybody boo and jeer.

I grew up in a bluegrass family, which means my parents did a lot of fighting. My mom played guitar; my dad mostly mandolin and fiddle. She didn’t like to learn new material, which didn’t sit well with him. He never practiced, which pissed her off. They were good, though — people came from all over to pick with them, and they never argued around guests. Jam nights were like magic.

I used to think the drinking or the money or us kids were the problem, but it really was just the music: my dad joined an fancy electric country band and everything got good pretty much overnight. You can’t build a happy family out of three chords and the truth.

Been watching too many old Stavros Gakos videos while beheadached these last couple weeks; planemaking is looking real approachable again. I may not have floats, but I do have files, gumption, and a very nice heat treat oven. Maybe this is my next toolmaking endeavor.

After the cabinets, of course. And the bandsaw. And the looms. What the fuck ever. I will, so help me, get there. Eventually.

Oddball project requests of the last couple weeks: assistance identifying locally held material for a big-name biography; short-notice market research for a drug development grant; co-development and -delivery of a new certificate program for trial coordinators; portfolio-based impact quantification of a crop of [award] recipients for systematizing future nominations; probably some other stuff I’m not remembering just now.

These atop a teetering pile of the chronic evidence synthesis and outreach work, plus the usual professional development and organizational treadmill, alongside administrative keeping-up. Oh, and we’re already booking out instruction through the fall. I do so relish these middle days of summer.

An opportunity to roadtrip with a friend to pick up their uncle’s derelict — gasp — bandsaw? Why yes, reader, and that’s exactly what I shall do.
