Now this isn't just inspired by SW Outlaws, I have this issue with the Jedi Survivor series too.
And there are plenty of video games that pull this.
So... This one isn't going to be very nice.
I have a fun acronym now, its called, GAD. It stands for Graphics / Graphical Design, Animation, Dialogue. GAD's specific intent is a surface level analysis on the intitial presentation and operation on a video game. It doesn't go into story, it doesn't go into character, its simply, the initial thing you run into when you go through it the first time.
( If it was a movie, it'd be VAD. Visuals-Animation/Actor-Dialogue).
And the GAD problems i'm having can be split up thusly.
Graphics - The visual style and design.
I personally do not like shiner "more real" graphics. I haven't liked that since before 2004 (so basically since childhood). Because shiner graphics meant taking away from the story, or visuals, or burning out the graphics card.
I feel that anyone going that far is compensating for a lack when they do.
Modern SW keeps trying to make things more and more real, and after a certain point, I wonder--why not just hire real actors and perform live action video games like the 90s used to.
7th Guest did that, and it was rather revolutionary for a point and click adventure.
Stylized allows a lot more lee way, a lot more freedom of design, and allows characters to actually look like they live in the environment they stand on.
I question why folks want "more real", like, why though. What's the point? Stress testing the Graphics Card?
Sub section: Design.
My biggest issue with a lot of post-buyout SW alien designs now is how out of place they look. Like, in OG, you knew they were muppets, but they had a life to them, they had a gritt to them, and that made them come off as more than just a rubber-forehead or a muppet.
So when I see a live action Tooka, I'm... not feeling the same thing. When I see a "realistic" tooka, its not real, its someone turning on the "realness filter" on a cartoon. Cool, the fur no longer looks like its drawn flat, its puffed up--everything else about the design is still flat.
You want a good example of what a furred alien thing looks like that has grit and weight to it? Let's consider the muppet creatures from The Labyrinth. Or Dark Crystal, where one of the furry things was two yellow eyes and teeth.
Even cute things have to have a little grit to them, wrinkles, and weight. Things have to have more definition.
So when making a video game with the uncanny realistics, that must include the animals involved, or they come off as looking like someone put a filter on them.
And honestly, why are they looking like that, this is a video game media--grit and "ugliness" are easy achievements.
This by far not the only franchise that's pulled the whole "overly cutsey clean" stuff and ended up with creatures that look out of place next to the more "real" people and entities.
A good example of what animals look a lot more visually appealing and environmentally settled in non video game CGI, would be these folk.
The entire cast of Rango (2011). There's flaws, there's ugliness, wrinkles, wear and tear. And in that, they still come off as having more gravity and attachment to the world around them, rather than looking like stuffed toys.
Animation - The motion of the style.
Outlaws was the one who really tipped me for this one. Because all the models look like they were animated with water in mind. There's no jerky motions, there's no weight, its very clearly animated with motion capture.
Basically the CGI equivalency of first time animating in Adobe Flash, where the "limbs" move in smooth archs and constant frames, as opposed to actually using real motion frame references and how something appears faster when you stretch or cut frames out.
Or better yet, real people. Real people jerk, slow at random, speed up, flash out, collapse in a heap.
I personally cannot stand the look of the "smooth constant frames", it doesn't hold Weight in them.
The best way to solve that issue is go back and reedit motions to fit the idea of keyframes. For example:
This ball is not a smooth arc, nor does it underline smooth animations. It adapts to look "natural" for its environment, that means jerking motions, flattening motions, faster speeds...
Some animations cover half these frames in blurr-speed effects to save on time. The effect still works.
And all adhere to an idea that gravity exists in scenes and the world, and allows the idea that these visual constructs have Weight to them. They look more "natural" and not like something is existing in a vacuum and was photoshopped into a scene.
There's folks that mess around with Gmod and their animations look more natural than these SW Video games do.
Dialogue - Speech of the Style.
Oh gods I've complained already about SW's writing, but let's really get to the dialogue.
Most of it sounds like soap opera. It doesn't sound natural, its sounds high school drama theatre--I can at least say for certain that High schoolers have more fun.
The dialogue is stilted, prone to grand speeches that say... nothing.
One of the things that broke me out of Jedi Survivor, is how, in the intro of the game, Kestis' friend stepped out of line in front of an INquisitor to put on a picard speech about freedoms and empires, and it just... came out of nowhere. It was stupid and ridiculous (and star trek levels of heavy handed), and seemed really out of character for this guy. Because what he just did was the dumbest thing imaginable. Like, bruh, what the fuck were you expecting.
It didn't seem natural.
And then I get to the dialogues of Outlaws, and... it just, comes off stilted. Like the characters weren't really talking to each other, they were more or less making statements, or reading a script. They didn't proclaim anything unless it was some heavy handed message, and generally you could replace everyone and it wouldn't change a thing about the story. Except maybe ND-5.
Lot of ND-5's dialogue seemed overly dramatic, without a lot of character to back up that drama, which... isn't great when you're trying to do the "Robot has Humanity" bit.
ND-5 literally says at one point "I don't trust anyone", for which Kay replies with "Not even me?"
The only difference is the "That's fair", which, I use in polite conversation because its common slang vernacular, for customers at my corner store job. And I can tell you, its just a conversational turn of phrase.
Like, how many animes and video games and overly dramatic movies, have that same fucking conversation. Not even Metal Gear Solid, the most cliche-deep-anime dialogued video game series in history, has that bad of dialogue, and those fucks go on entire shakespearan rants about nuclear weapons and the horrors of war, with Live action Pictures and Prose.
When it comes to dialogue, it has to be natural first. Or if you're going the anime approach, lean full into the theatricalness.
You can't be "mid" or mediocre. Mid isn't interesting, it's even less natural than theatre--and theatre exaggerates for dramatic effect.
Natural means it bounces off each other, characters are "aware" of other characters, themselves, and what they're talking about. They take in details, they have internal references and judgements, or rather, you're trying to get the audience to make note that a character has internal references, judgements and takes in details.
A lot of Post Buyout SW dialogue really is mid without much else interesting around that might convince one that this is just a weak point, and not a symptom of a larger set of problems with the writing.
The best way to figure it, is to actually listen to how people talk, get into conversations, notice tics and verbals and social cues. Sit in a coffee shop or restaurant, and just listen to people. Find books that have good examples of great dialogue.
( Recognize that you can't translate everything one to one, because people have this tendency of stuttering, odd pauses, forgetting subjects mid conversation and that doesn't make good for a narrative. )
My personal example will always be the Discworld first, if not, my top five. I would also recommend Morrowind, who's dialogues are entirely text based adventure windows that allows you to read a character out. Both of these mediums show characters who are aware of both other people and their surroundings.
Hell, give someone funny voices. Go off on random imaginary tangents with that funny voice.
Basically, a lot of Reading will help you in the long run, by giving you example of how unique conversational quirks and natures of humanity can be translated into fiction and written format without losing the uniqueness.
Just, a lot of things need More. Just a bit more extra attention and maintenance. Even if the plot and mechanics are dogshit, the rest would at least be entertaining to look at.

Every day I handle more money than I will ever make. Every day.
At the start of my employment, my boss showed me videos of people stealing, and we both had a chuckle about it. How silly they were! There was a camera overhead, and itās not to watch the shoppers. See, we canāt actually stop shoplifters. They get away with it maybe nine out of ten times. But we, who are watched and tallied and witnessed? We are always caught.
At first it was hard to hold one hundred dollars bills. An amount I had never seen before. An amount that didnāt exist in my household. Itās normal now. Here is something that is not for me.
āWhat the hell, Iāll take another,ā says the man, pondering our 200 dollar watches. What the hell. Total comes to 580 and not even a flinch in his face. I have been working for 11 hours today and made only 110 dollars. It will go to my rent. Today I work for free, it feels. When I get my check, I will have 35 dollars left for food and saving.
The six hundreds he hands me go into the cash register. For a moment, I imagine having money. Then I put it away, counting out his change.
I know for a fact we sell our products for double what they are worth. That I could be making commission. That they could hand me those 580 dollars and change my life and not even mark the difference in their checkbooks. Heās not the only sale they make today, but I am the reason they made it. Heās not the only one spending 600 dollars, but if I hadnāt spent two hours with him telling me about his life, he wouldnāt have spent any. I go home. I donāt own a watch.
I have watched and rewatched a video on how to make salmon four ways. My shopping list is always the same. Pasta. Rice. Tuna. If I can afford butter it was a good week. I dream of the world I will never walk in, where I can throw the best fish fillet in the cart with a shrug. I hold hundreds in my hand and look up at the camera. I put them under the cash drawer.
I go to work. I scrap together my savings. I eat my bowl of rice slowly. My manager takes a paid week off from work just for his birthday. He owns a yacht.Ā
i wrote this while i was working at orlandoās walt disney world parks.
i was part of their college program. i moved to the state for it. they legally owned the building i was living in and still charged me rent. i ostensibly was being charged to work for them. it was a 2 bedroom apartment and they placed 6 adult women in it in forced triples.
as many as one in ten disney employees have experienced homelessness while working for the company. despite huge efforts to unionize, strike, or otherwise demand fair treatment; disney has refused to increase employee quality of life.
disney admits publicly that a good portion of their success is because the employees (ācast membersā) are dedicated, passionate, and selfless. this is never reflected in pay. even āfaceā characters (ie those that are princesses etc) make barely above a minimum wage.
at the time that i worked there, i made $8.50 an hour. at one point i was asked to create a human shield around a bag because a bomb dog had alerted to it. for eight fucking dollars an hour.
i now work a very cushy office job. i have bought the salmon and cooked it all four ways.
i go to the store. i am nice to the person behind the counter. she looks up at the camera while she counts out my change. there is nothing fundamentally different about her and i.
Playing star wars outlaws is just giving me so many ideas for TBB in that era and then realising that they're not criminals so they wouldn't really... do half of this stuff but also at that point in time... WELL it'd just be more interesting dammit.
Thinky thoughts. I've already got a wild plan for how to introduce them to end Empire times without changing them too much... :D
(and little do you know that NIX THAT CUTE AXOLOTL STITCH ALIEN WAS VOICED BY DEE BRADLEY BAKER--the creatURE IS A CLONE TROOPER THE ENTIRE TIME. YOU HAVE BEEN BAMBOOZLED! )
( I haven't played the game I'm just doing some looksy ups )
I DID check cause I wondered who voiced ND-5 (who is hilarious but dry droid characters are my fave) and I am not at all surprised that he voices Nix. It's the closest we get to a clone in that game.
But yeah currently playing it (I also stream through youtube to a friend while at it even though I'm not very good at it xD)
"Evil AU Bad Batch" is what's happening in my head now anyway. Or well Criminal Batch, not. Evil evil. Brain's buzzing, gotta use it. But some missions could be easily translated as basic mercenary work too.
I mean we don't call Han Solo Evil. ( Personally, this would be the perfect game to have Fee in). We need more Gremlin Bad Batch in our lives, the whole "I'M LAWFUL NOW" doesn't ring true for guys who's leader unironically tattooed half of his entire face with a skull.
The game certainly has a lot of good ideas, me research hooks took one look at ND-5 and went "That is fucking genius, lemme research this".
Sadly I've come to the conclusion that the game isn't' for me.
That is true, he isn't considered evil, chaotic neutral maybe? If we're gonna go in those terms.
But I get not liking it, it's not perfect (for numerous reasons) but it's still giving ideas at least and a look into the syndicate stuff of SW. And a cool droid. xD

TBB is so... disingenuous to both TCWs and Star Wars.
To take example.
Like, for example;
There was a three episode arc in TCWs, where Obiwan was "killed" and pronounced "dead". Anakin was in angry anguish the entire time. It was both milked for all its worth, weighed heavy on all the characters involved, and contributed to Anakin's slow decent into darkness.
In TBB, Fives, Echo's batchmate and both former characters of TCWs, is mentioned as dead in a one off line and then never again.
Actual writing would've spun more drama on that, made it a whole arc, or even apart of Echo's struggle as a character.
In "Empire Strikes Back", one of the greatest most refrenced twists of all time occured. "Luke, I am your Father". The horrible evil wizard knight that is Darth Vader, was in reality, the father that Luke had wanted to emulate the whole time.
It's so famous, its down right cliche to copy it today, and is often parodied for it. Many people have performed the twist, however, to great success when its set up right (Earthbound, for example--I won't spoil it for you).
in TBB, Omega is revealed to be a force sensitive naturally aging child... and then nothing else is expanded on.
Emerie Karr is heavily implied to be the Fifth Enhanced Clone... And nothing is expanded on.
Tech is implied to have SURVIVED! and then nothing is expanded on.
The CHIPS, are dropped. (Never gonna give that up, never gonna let that down, never gonna turn around and desert you---)
Crosshair--somehow survived and left Kamino. Fucking how, man, did you grow a space ship down there?
All an amazing series of twists that go fucking nowhere except to have a shock value effect, and by the end, nothing is fullfilling, nothing is satisfying, and you generally just feel relief that the nightmare is over and we can pass the fuck out.
TCWs, expands on Jedi Culture a bit more. Expands on Jedi characters that were otherwise one scene one-shots in the films, allowing a mingling of books and comics on screen.
TBB... Doesn't do shit for the clones except you get to watch them die a whole lot. Character culture is next to non-existant. No expansion on clones from the prior series. No expansion on what kind of inner workings clones go through behind closed doors and away from Jedi and Public.
What little drama we get is wholesale Empire consumed, (because there are no conflicts that dont' involve Empire BAD or Omega SPECIAL), and just a lot of heavy handed self pitying that gets so fucking old after the first fifteen seconds.

I donāt think itās possible to adequately state how fucking ballsy and skilled this player is considering the EXTREMELY specific timing of that dodge and catching the spear attack WHILE TAUNTING BETWEEN EACH THROW
As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.
Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.
I just saw an anon come into a gif-makerās ask box and start with the phrase: āIām trying not to spam your inbox with reblogs, butā and then go on to say how much they love the gifs.
But Iām still stuck on that opening phrase becauseā¦what? I am so confused by how people view interactions on tumblr & AO3 these days. Let me make it very clear for anyone who is unsure:
CREATORS WANT YOU TO INTERACT WITH THEIR WORK.
The limit does not exist on how many of their works you can interact with in a certain period.
If you like every fic theyāve ever written? Then feel free to give them all kudos and even leave a comment on every single one if you feel inclined! If youāre going through someoneās blog and you vibe with every post, like/reblog to your heartās content!
As long as youāre not expecting something back from them or adding a ton of irrelevant comments, itās not spam! Itās what this is all about!! Iām not even much of a creator and I still feel a huge sense of pride when I see a ton of notifications in a row from a person, as it clearly shows they thought my blog was worth spending time on.
And if for some reason a creator is annoyed by this (unlikely), they can manage their own experience (turn off notifs, not look at their notes, delete the fic, etc) -- so donāt deprive the majority of creators because of some imagined annoyed person. Fandom is a collaborative effort and we all must participate!

seeing people say "this trope has been done to death" as if that's ever stopped anyone from eating bread. BREAD HAS BEEN DONE TO DEATH FOR LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND WE STILL WANT MORE BREAD. write your chosen one AU. write your coffee shop meet-cute. write your 47th iteration of "there was only one bed" because guess what??? we're still hungry.
they should invent a secret second weekend so that you can see friends and do fun things while still having enough time to do errands and sleep in without dying of exhaustion all the time
