Trigger Warnings: Death (+ death of children) Blood, Fire, Grief,
Austin Lishan was born in New York in the early 1900s. In his early teens, he met Cora, and from the moment he saw her he knew she would be the girl that would one day marry. Of course, he was just a kid who had no idea what direction life might take him in at that time. However as the two grew as friends, he eventually plucked up the courage to ask her out for a date one day, and it wasn't long after that they fell in love. The pair married in their early twenties, and Austin couldn't believe his luck, that he had married his best friend. Before they knew it they were starting their own family. Their first child was a girl, they named her Viola, and she was a child with the brightest smile you'd ever see, so full of joy that brought happiness to the young couple. A few years later their second child, Jacob, was brought into the world. Even from such a young age, he was a character, so humorous and creative. A perfect addition to complete their little family. Austin was so content, he had everything he could ever need in life with his loving family.Β
However, the first disaster struck when Austin was returning from a long day of work during a snowstorm that hit New York and left him stranded. He knew that out there alone in the cold with no shelter, and nowhere to go for safety, it wouldn't be long until hypothermia started setting in. He tried to take shelter beneath the trees, though he'd been out there for hours, his clothing providing very little warmth he waited out the storm with his jacket wrapped tightly around him. Austin slowly began to realise that death was coming for him. However, he had faith that he would be okay no matter what happened because he knew his family was home, happy, healthy and safe. That was all that mattered to him.Β
It was by some stroke of luck, or a curse depending on how you look at it, that the fates were not done with Austin just yet. He was close to death, cold, skin ashen as his heart worked hard to keep the blood pumping throughout his body and before he knew it there was someone there and he wasn't alone. Perhaps they were there to take him to shelter and find warmth. He thought he was saved, but what he didn't know was that as they pressed their wrist to his lips and the first taste of that odd metallic-tasting liquid touched his tongue, something wasn't right. Death was inevitable and Austin knew this. He had made peace with it as he'd waited long, long hours out in the freezing snow. There was a moment where he thought he'd passed out and when he came to the entire world felt different.
The sound of each tiny snowflake falling against the ground seemed louder to him, and somehow the wind felt colder yet it didn't seem to have the same effect as it did before. His heart was beating strong and steady and he was no longer dying. Somehow he was alive but he didn't understand how he could feel more alive than he ever had and how suddenly it had all happened.
There was so much confusion. He was different. He had died that night, and he came back a vampire, turned against his will. Although his maker had the intention of saving his life, little did they know they changed it forever. This was the first event in Austin's life that set the cogs in motion.Β
The vampire that turned him explained everything to him; all of the supernatural species, the myths that were real and what this now meant for him. Austin wanted to go home, see his wife and be with his children, but he couldn't as his maker explained why. He wrote to his wife, letting her know that he was okay and that he was safe and wished to return home soon. Cora was filled with concern and as days went by she could no longer sit and wait. Whilst Austin had spent time with his maker learning every day and trying to understand what this new reality meant for him and his family, Cora searched, and had the neighbours out looking each day. Months went by with no trace of Austin.
In the beginning, the bloodlust was the hardest thing to understand and control. Austin hated the fact that he had to drink the blood of humans now, but this was what he had to do to survive. Eventually, when his wife found him she could see the internal battle in his eyes as he tried to keep his distance so that he wouldn't accidentally harm her, though he missed her terribly and Austin soon parted ways from his maker.
As he returned home with Cora, Austin told her everything. Understandably, Cora was shocked and horrified at first. Who wouldn't be? However, this was nothing that the love the two of them held for each other could not overcome. Their love was strong and it would stand the test of time.Β
As the years passed conversations cropped up now and then about their future, how he was unaging as his wife started to show the signs of years gone by on her face. Eventually, they knew that she and his children would age beyond him, so they talked about their options and making Cora a vampire first. Then, when his children were old enough they would make them vampires too, this way they could all live forever as a family.
Cora wasn't sure as she'd seen Austin struggle with bloodlust, and leave suddenly on occasions when it was too overwhelming for him. She did not want that for their children and so they kept putting it off as long as they possibly could. Though their time ran out too soon. Austin had made a mistake on more than one occasion. A blood trail that led right to him and his family. When Austin was out for another day's work hunters came looking for him and instead, they found Cora and the children. If you asked the hunters, they'd have told you it was a dreadful accident. A mistake of their own. They never intended to kill his wife and children. Only him. They had no idea they were in the house that they burnt down to the ground until it was too late.
When Austin returned home there was nothing but crumbling buildings, ash, smoke and flames where his home once stood. The life they had built had been burnt down to the ground and was nothing but rubble and dust. Austin was alone again. Distraught in his grief he went to seek out his maker, blame them for turning him instead of leaving him to die. However, he had no idea where to go as they'd since left the state when they parted ways years before. Austin could not imagine how he would live on without his wife and children but had very little choice. He left New York with no destination in mind, moving from town to town and city to city. With so much pain in his heart and grief and guilt that crippled him, he found himself unable to control his bloodlust. It was a dangerous time for anyone that crossed his path. It was the darkest time of his life.Β
More years went by, and he remained alone aside from the occasional company that was only there until he drained them. He didn't let anyone in. He'd heard rumours of the place close to what was once his home. Lunar Cove. A safe place for supernatural beings like himself. Eventually, he made his way to Lunar Cove only to see if that was where his maker had gone. When he didn't find them there, but instead found other vampires he stayed for a while, settling in, and this was when he met Meena, who soon became the first person that he let in. In their way, they became family, and some of that grief was alleviated, as he found somewhere he might belong. Years and years pass by and Austin starts to come and go from Lunar Cove as he still carries the guilt of his family's death to this very day. He'd visit the place where their house once stood, though by this time it had been built up into a department store of all things. It wasn't the same. He ignored the odd looks he would get every time someone would catch him laying flowers outside in memory of his wife and children. He'd spent some time refamiliarising himself with the city that was always changing, and during one of those times, he'd met a witch named Anna, who he found out to deal blood to vampires. It was an easy way for him to start controlling the bloodlust again instead of harming others and the young witch helped him with that. Through Anna, he met Arlo, another witch who wished to become a vampire like him and whilst at first he'd tried to talk them out of it, he couldn't help but empathise with their situation. Perhaps it was their shared anger towards someone who'd hurt them or some sort of need for revenge. In the end he agreed, turning Arlo, creating another being like himself, though after that, they too had parted ways until Austin returned to Lunar Cove once again.
