I am leaving for a summer internship soon and I have a feeling I am either going to have the time of my life or completely hate it. Kind of bummed that it's not a big enough place to have a giant intern cohort like I'm used to but I know a lot more people in this city now.
Ok it's a startup, I decided I wanted to see what being at an early stage company was like since I've mostly worked in large bureaucratic spaces and said fuck it lets try. the pay is same as any FAANG internship but the interviewing and onboarding has been sloppy af and I just found out that they made this internship mandatory in person only for them to not even have a real office in this location, they rent a coworking space...
What's the salary range you expect to make post PhD?
I've seen people in my field make 80k on the low end and at 750k at the highest, I personally think I'm likely to fetch 150-200k fresh out of grad school. My domain is niche enough that I'm not willing to outright say what I do but I've combined a natural science background (one that directly impacts peoples day to day lives) with strong computational skills (data science, assorted mathematical modelling work, anything AI/ML, etc etc).
Off topic but one thing that's really nice about being niche is that, if I stay in my lane, I don't have to compete for jobs in the same way someone in strictly natural science or strictly tech might. I got an email the other day from something I applied to saying that they liked me enough to consider me for an unlisted position but were really sorry to have to reject me from the initial thing I applied for because they had "30 highly qualified applicants to consider." LOL. Lmao even.

Do you take birth control?
Yeah, I was prescribed the pill because it's one of the only things known to shrink endometriomas. Mine were getting large to the point where my OBGYN told me ovarian torsion was a risk and I might need my ovaries removed, but the pill did end up reducing mine to a much safer size and removal is off the table for now. I also take the pill to suppress periods that had been made really awful due to my endometriosis which had the unexpected side effect of me no longer being seriously anemic, which reduced a lot of my issues with fainting/dizzy spells. Honestly this was probably the best medical decision of my 20s and I hope it keeps working for me until I hit menopause.

being so close to an imminent move is making me not want to purchase anything at all. I'm working on actively downsizing a lot of what I own and it's been an interesting exercise in examining what "things" actually make my life better.
prioritizing ruthlessly and embracing "less" seems to be the theme of the year. the reality is I cannot be a super athlete, pursuing 5 different creative hobbies, getting my doctorate, reading constantly, learning 3 new languages etc etc and actually make significant progress in all of those things, there is just not enough time in the day.
also had a brief period earlier in the year where I had seriously considered a career swap but it was going to mean giving up 10 years of experience in something I enjoy (mostly) and realized that if it's truly high-level expertise I crave that it's going to be a lot easier for me to remain on the path I'm currently on and stack new, related skills on top of my current ones vs. starting a fresh endeavor from 0.
my life looks pretty austere as a result, I have the bare minimum of gym going to keep myself sane, babying my garden and a book here and there but other than that I'm in the lab most of the time and that's fine.
