Story time! I've had this blog for years (and lurked in many a fandom) but inspiration had never really hit me as hard as contributing fanfiction to Hogwarts Legacy - and in almost a year since I've started with my longfic, I've actually been distracted here and there to also write some one-shots for the fandom. Let me tell you something they donβt mention in those β10 Tips to Become a Writerβ listicles: writing isnβt a hobby you pick up like knitting or sourdough bread. Itβs more like a chronic condition you manage. A beautiful, exhausting, completely unhinged chronic condition.
People ask me, βHow did you get into writing?β as if I filled out an application form and got accepted. The truth? I didnβt get into writing. Writing got into me, set up camp, and refused to pay rent.
Hereβs what non-writers donβt understand: if I donβt write on a given day, I feel a guilt so crushing itβs like Iβve personally disappointed every version of myself that ever existed. Past me, who stayed up until 4 AM finishing that story? Betrayed. Future me, who was counting on todayβs progress? Devastated. Present me? Just sitting there, marinating in self-inflicted shame.
Itβs not about discipline or motivation or any of those productivity-bro buzzwords. Itβs about the fact that my brain literally will not let me rest until Iβve bled words onto a page. The ideas donβt politely wait for βwriting time.β They show up during dinner, during conversations, during that critical moment when youβre trying to fall asleep.
The Paradox of the Paralyzed Writer
And hereβs the kicker, the absolute cosmic joke of it all: when you actually sit down to write? Blank. Nothing. The cursor blinks at you like a judgmental eye, mocking your existence.
Youβd think that someone this obsessed, this possessed with writing would actuallyΒ do it, right? Wrong. Itβs quite the opposite. The more you need to write, the more your brain decides to cosplay as an empty parking lot at 2 PM on a Tuesday.
All those ideas that wereΒ screamingΒ at you during your commute, during your shower, during that meeting that couldβve been an email? Gone. Vanished. Evaporated into the ether the moment you opened a blank document. Itβs like your brain is running a protection racket against itself.
The obsession doesnβt translate to productivity. It translates to staring at a screen, questioning every word choice, deleting paragraphs that were actually fine, and somehow ending up with less written than when you started. The relationship between βwanting to writeβ and βactually writingβ is less of a correlation and more of an actively antagonistic situation.
The Myth of the Productive Writer (And Why Youβre Not One of Them)
And then there are the stories. You hear about people finishing entire manuscripts while working full-time. People who write during their lunch breaks, during their commutes, in those precious minutes between putting the kids to bed and collapsing into unconsciousness themselves. Theyβre churning out novels like itβs nothing, squeezing creativity from every spare second like theyβre juicing lemons.
And there you are. Not being one of them.
You, who supposedly βlove writing so much,β who βcanβt function without it,β are somehow incapable of producing a consistent thousand words while these people are out here writing entire trilogies in the notes app on their phone during their kidβs soccer practice.
The question creeps in, quiet and poisonous: Do you want it less? Do you deserve it less?
Maybe youβre not a βrealβ writer. Maybe all this guilt, all this obsession, all these 3 AM sessions staring at a blank screen β maybe itβs just performance. Maybe the people who actually finish things are made of something different, something you fundamentally lack.
The universe seems to be running a controlled experiment where everyone else got the βcan actually execute on their creative visionβ gene and you got... whatever this is. This strange purgatory of desperately wanting to write, being physically incapable of not thinking about writing, and yet somehow producing roughly the same word count as a particularly uninspired rock.
Itβs not about wanting it less. If anything, you might want itΒ too much. The weight of that want becomes its own obstacle, turning every writing session into a high-stakes performance instead of just... writing. But try explaining that to the part of your brain thatβs cataloging everyone elseβs success while youβre stuck on paragraph two of something you started three months ago.
So What Do We Do With All This?
Hereβs the thing they donβt tell you in the motivational Instagram posts: this is actually normal. The paralysis, the guilt, the comparison trap, the 3 AM sessions that produce nothing but anxiety β itβs not a bug in your writing process. Itβs a feature of being human and caring deeply about something.
The writers who seem to effortlessly churn out content? Theyβre dealing with their own version of this. Maybe their paralysis looks different. Maybe theyβve just gotten better at hiding it. Or maybeβand this is important β theyβve learned to writeΒ badlyfirst.
Because hereβs what actually helps: lowering the stakes. Stop trying to write something good. Just write something. Anything. Give yourself permission to produce absolute garbage. The kind of writing that makes you cringe as you type it. Do it anyway.
That blank document isnβt a stage where you need to perform. Itβs just a place to dump thoughts. Some of those thoughts will be brilliant. Most will be mediocre. Some will make you question your entire existence. All of it counts.
Three Things That Might Actually Help
1. Set a timer for 10 minutes and write without stopping.Β Donβt edit. Donβt delete. Donβt even read what you wrote. Just keep your fingers moving. The goal isnβt quality. Sometimes you need to write your way through the bad stuff to get to the good stuff.
2. Keep a βbad ideasβ document.Β Every stupid thought, every half-formed sentence, every embarrassing metaphorβthrow it in there. No judgment. Sometimes the pressure to make everything βcountβ is whatβs blocking you. Give yourself a place where nothing has to count.
3. Remember that writing is rewriting.Β That first draft everyone else is supposedly producing during their lunch break? It probably sucks too. The difference is theyβre letting it suck. Theyβre giving themselves permission to fix it later. You can too.
The obsession doesnβt go away. The guilt doesnβt disappear. But maybe you can make peace with the fact that this difficult, beautiful, completely unhinged thing chose you. And youβre doing your best with it.
Thatβs enough.
The Characters Are Waiting (And Theyβre Getting Impatient)
You want real motivation to write? Here it is, unfiltered and uncomfortably honest:
Remember your characters? The ones living rent-free in your head, having conversations you never wrote down, making decisions in scenes that exist only in the space between your thoughts and sleep? Theyβre waiting. And if you donβt write them, no one else will.
They Chose You (Now Stop Abandoning Them)
This is the actual truth: those stories, those people, those moments youβve been carrying aroundβ theyβreΒ yours. They came to you specifically. Not to the productive writer who finishes manuscripts on their lunch break. Not to the disciplined one who writes every single day without fail. ToΒ you.
And every day you postpone, every time you scroll instead of write, every βIβll do it tomorrowβ that turns into next week, next month, next year β youβre not just procrastinating. Youβre abandoning the only people who trusted you to tell their story.
Who else is going to write about that character who keeps you up at night? Who else knows the exact way theyβd react in that impossible situation? Who else has spent months, maybe years, building their world in the quiet corners of your mind?
No one. Just you.
Your characters deserve to exist outside your head. They deserve to have their story told, even if itβs messy, even if itβs imperfect, even if youβre terrified no one else will love them the way you do.
ok fine iβll go write my book because at this point my characters have probably been standing in the same scene for three weeks wondering why their deeply undisciplined author abandoned them mid-plot.
