really hitting this realization of like. it actually sucks that it's considered bad game design to, purposefully or not, give a player rough/negative feelings

if there's any argument at all against games being art it's the fact that we've all decided it's bad game design to take something away from a player, or to make them wait, or to fail to reward them for their efforts, or to let them get confused or lost or stuck

I was talking w/ @watermelynn-witch about this and she said "saying the purpose of a game is to be fun is like saying the purpose of a painting is to invoke joy"

I value fun really highly and I don't think fun is anti-art but. games can and should be allowed to be more things than just that

Most of the game design advice you see thrown around is guidance towards delivering A Product, probably one that costs a lot of time and money to produce and needs to appeal to a broad audience in order to turn a profit.

If the vision for your game is less Marvel Movie #289 and more Eraserhead, you are going to want to ignore most of the common wisdom in regards to producing the former.

Also I think there's this problem where, for some reason, people constantly misinterpret (or strawman) any statement along the lines of "games DON'T HAVE to be fun" as "games SHOULDN'T be fun" and immediately proceed to ridicule it because lololol look at this out of touch pretentious arthouse snob who thinks GAMES being FUN is bad.

Like, I've constantly found myself in this situation where I try to argue that being fun is not necessary (or the only way) for a game to be good, and people respond as if I'm arguing that a game being fun is a bad thing and games can only be True Art if they aren't fun.
