Willoughby Goddard in the 1950s (part 1)
Willoughby Goddard was a fat British actor born in 1926. He often played upper-class types and often villainous ones.
His first role on film was uncredited and undressed, playing a fat man at a Russian bath in the Swashbuckler, The Fighting Pimpernel (aka The Elusive Pimpernel) in 1949 starring David Niven. Since this was uncredited, I am guessing which one of the fat fellows in the baths was him, but I believe this is him.
His first credited role in film came out a year later, in the crime drama, Bait, a murder mystery in 1950. He was 23 years old in this film and he was a heavy fellow at this time.
He was mixing live theater with TV appearances, gaining experience in both mediums. Between 1954 and 1957 he did 22 TV movies and Teleplays, which most are no longer available. During the years of 1954 and 1955, Goddard gained a LOT of weight and along with his booming, commanding voice, he found himself in great demand on Television.
He played Mr. Brocklehurst in the Jane Eyre 6-part miniseries in 1956.
He looked much fatter than his last screen appearance, which was an uncredited, one liner in 1954’s Man with a Million Pound Note. He is on the right.
He played the museum owner in the TV drama Point of View in 1956, which showed on Rheingold Theater in the UK and US.
He played a cameo part as a victim of a ‘killer for hire’ in the dark comedy, The Green Man with Alastair Sim, also in 1956.
He plays a comedic role in the comedy A Touch of the Sun with Frankie Howerd and Ruby Murray in 1956.
He also played the role of Mr. Creakle in the 13 part miniseries of Charles Dickens, David Copperfield in 1956. All episodes are lost for good.
He appeared in two episodes of the adventure drama The Swashbuckler starring Robert Shaw. He appeared as different characters, one aggressive and one dullard and passive, proving he didn’t always have to be a blowhard character.

Willoughby Goddard in the 1960s (part 1)
In 1960 Willoughby Goddard appeared as a bicycle-riding Police Sergeant in the comedy Inn for Trouble starring Peggy Mount. I lightened up the last still. No reason.
He appeared in episodes of TV crime dramas, one was Danger Man with Patrick McGoohan. He played a very large China man named McFadden.
Later in the year he appeared in the Romcom movie The Millionairess, playing an authority figure, with Sophia Loren, Peter Sellers and Alastair Sim.
Finally, in 1960, he appeared in a teleplay, called A Subject of Scandal and Concern, about the true story of the lastperson to be tried for blasphemy in England. He, of course played an authority figure, Chairman of the Magistrates.
In 1961 he had a small role as a hotel keeper in the mystery drama The Secret Partner with Stewart Granger. I lightened the first picture here. No reason.
