Moss of the Woods Herbal Pendant Giveaway!
July 24-July 31
In lieu of a proper shop update today, I’ve decided to do a small giveaway to mark the introduction of my new Herbal Pendants! Featuring small sprigs of real, locally harvested herbs and plants preserved in crystal clear resin, these pendants are intended not only as a statement piece for my fellow plant obsessives, but also as wearable charms and botanical allies for those so inclined.
Rules:
One winner will be chosen and given their choice of an herbal pendant (or something else if they prefer)
Enter by reblogging. One reblog=one entry.
Likes are appreciated, but do not count towards an entry
Please do not spam your followers; be considerate. If I see too many reblogs from you in a row I will only count them as one or two.
Must be 18 years or older to enter (US law, I’m sorry)
Winner will be chosen on the evening of Sunday, July 31 via a random number generator
Please do not enter via a giveaway blog; please be considerate of my time, I only ask for a little publicity from you as a small business.
These are pretty sweet.
Waffle gardening is a traditional farming method used by the Zuni people of New Mexico to grow crops in semi-arid environment. Each square plot has berms about 10-12 cm high, the depressions efficiently capture and hold rainwater and retard evaporation.

Been doing lots of research on Native American gardening practices, especially in regards to arid climates. I've been decently successful with more traditional gardening, raised beds and all, but I always found myself fighting these gnarly Central Valley summers. Just gonna try and collect some reference materials on this tumblr and then hopefully restart my summerisle garden blog. I still have a hell of a lot of reading and planning to do still though. I'm sick of looking at my fallow garden.
Hot hens.

while I’m here:
aspartame does not give you cancer
gluten is not bad for you if you’re not allergic/don’t have celiac disease
superfoods aren’t real, they’re just healthy things with maybe some nicer levels of certain vitamins
vaccines do not cause autism or really anything else and the chemicals present in them that typically scare you are in such minute amounts that they do precisely fuck-all in your body (we’re talking scales of one part per million)
you cannot do a cleanse or diet to “rid your body of toxins,” your kidneys and liver have that covered
GMO foods will not kill you; most genetic crop modification just makes our crops hardier and produce more food (and genetic modification doesn’t inject more chemicals into your food, it’s just minor altering of DNA that is made of the exact same stuff your DNA is made from)
if you feed your cat a vegan diet I will personally come to your home with the skull of a long-dead predator, point out the shape of its jaw and teeth as indicators of predatory feeding habits, and then beat you with it
as a biochem major i get so salty when people give me shit for supporting GMOs like we’re not creatiNG CANCER CAUSING ALIEN CROPS it’s literally hey let’s splice this gene from this plant into another plant to give it properties of first plant
You know what else is GMO? Dogs. Every domesticated animal, as well as crops, is GMO. Since selective breeding is GMO.
Well fuck, I had typed out a full on response to this and accidentally deleted it so I gotta get all concise on this shit. First of all, I love science, it's awesome and it's extremely important to continue exploring our world in a scientific manner. BUT, I have a major problem with GMOs and it's not over the "can you eat it" thing. As far as I know, (and I'd love for someone to tell me otherwise) the end game to GMOs is higher yield thanks to being able to withstand heavy pesticide and herbicide application. I'm aware this isn't the case for everything, but even if it isn't, higher yield at the price of a loss of biodiversity is not okay with me. You can certainly call domestication of plants, animals (and yeasts!) a type of genetic modification, but it is quite a bit removed from lab style genetic splicing. Also, if GMOs allow companies to patent certain breeds of plants, which in turn allows them to sue small farms out of business for unlicensed use of a certain plant merely due to an accidental cross pollination, then it very much is a terrible thing to support. Anyways, this got a little ranty and I'd really like to find and link to sources to back up some of what I said, but I'm going to be lazy instead. That's just my personal bit on GMOs. I very much agree that it is stupid to just parrot popscience mania over gluten, superfoods, vegan cat food (wtf people) etc... Go science for studying the human consumption GMOs, but please consider all the other effects on both human and non human existence on this planet.
And done! This went surprisingly fast and I really have to attribute it to using Spirit freehand transfer sheets. No more redrawing the design half way though. Also, blackclaw needles are fucking awesome. #stickandpoke #handpokedtattoo #handpoke #handpokers #capebuffalo #capebuffaloskull #skulltattoo #handpokeartist #blackclaw #blackclawneedle #machinefree #tattoo #sticknpoke #blackwork

Homemade kimchi success! Unfortunately I didn't have daikon around for this batch, but it still tastes great. Gonna do some sauerkraut tonight.

Ready to party.
Forgot to post this haul from the Fresno Cactus and Succulent Society's summer sale the other day. I've been reclusive and antisocial for a while, but I think I'm ready to join the club and hang out with other cactus nerds (mostly funny old ladies :P).
Forgot to post these, some late blooms from the Hall of Horrors area of Joshua Tree. I took an embarrassing amount of cactus pictures, most very washed out since it was so bright out and also phone camera. Echinocereus engelmannii (hedgehog cactus), Opuntia basilaris var basilaris (beavertail prickly pear), and Coryphantha alversonii (foxtail cactus).
Getting back into the sourdough bread game. Not too bad, but I have a serious amount of learning to do still.
