Opuntia erinacea
This prickly pear cactus is not uncommon in the desert areas of southeastern California, but in early spring it really makes a fine floral display, as seen here. It is related to the very widespread Opuntia polyacantha, and considered by some to be a western form of that species.

This species is hardy to zone 4 and native to the US! Needs full sun, though, the more the better.
