Gymnocalycium schickendantzii (G. pungens)
Gymnocalycium schickendantzii is a widespread and variable cactus species from northwestern Argentina, and the form pictured is especlly spiny. While it was originally named Gymnocalycium pungens, but is now regarded as a form of G. schickendantzii. The white flowers with a slight brownish tinge are seen with many other species in the genus. While Gymnocalycium species are found in southern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brasil, the greatest number occur in Argentina.
