madison grew up the youngest of three, her older brothers always louder and braver than she was, but never one without the other two. her father was a fire chief, a proud man who always came home smelling like smoke and long shifts. her mother taught elementary school and was patient in a way that kept the whole family together. it wasn't a bad childhood, but one that kept her believing nothing terrible could ever truly happen to her.

her early twenties felt like a different life entirely. she was engaged to her high school sweetheart, someone she thought she'd spend forever with, and had already started down the nursing path. they'd just moved into their first home and in her mind everything was working out perfectly, exactly as she had planned.

she was getting home late one night after class, only to find her home up in flames. she knew who was still inside before anyone had to say it, and knowing didn't make a difference. she couldn't get to them, couldn't change anything. she fought like hell to get into that house, and when all else failed, she watched as her father went back in anyway, unable to give up on her, on them. he didn't come back out. she spent hours sat on the curb, left with nothing but questions that didn't come with answers.

it took a long time for her to pick up the pieces and keep going, but it was the paramedics that took care of her outside the house that night that stuck with her, inspired her & as much as she wanted to sit there forever and hope that things would change, afraid she'd fall too deep into her grief if she stayed, madison picked up and moved into the city where she started emt training and eventually became a licensed paramedic.
