Inspired By āDulce et Decorum Estā by Wilfred Owen and recent events
Inspired eyes, with tired hearts
We are slaves to the bell and onwards we march
Into battle, young and unready, and afraid
We have known those around us sinceā¦forever
Some are sweet and gentle like feathers
Others have storms raging in their eyes
Others do not care to try
But we exist, and we live, and like it or not
Iām the end we are calm when the tension is hot
We wish for a change to our boring day
But now we want to whisk the change away
And weād give anything for our boring routine
To replace the paralyzing image of the horrible scene
Young lives were ended and young hearts stopped beating
When selfishness and ignorance took on new meanings
Fear and fire swept turned existence into hell
And childhood friends said their last farewells
The young and bright prodigies
Forgot their pride and fell to their knees
That troubled kid took up a gun
Decided he would have a little fun
And changed hundreds of lives for the worse
Upon the school he laid a curse
Of shell shock and scars, that might never heal
Memories from a terrible ordeal
From the ashes emerge warriors who will never forget
The feeling of beginnings ending early in death
We looked up, with newfound fire, to the skies
We set out to prove the old masters wrong
We set out to heal and sing a new song
Here we stand and here we stay
We must immortalize the friends that we lost
The childrenās lives, the highest cost
For what purpose, for what truth?
Why the lives of our learning youth?
We students know best of all
We read the poem in English and were all appalled
We know the old lie, we know it well
The lie that everyone believes in and tells
āIt is sweet and fitting
to die for oneās countryā
Let us never forget the unwilling martyrs who died before we realized that we needed change. We need change. We can prevent more deaths, we can change the game before more unwanted change is brought upon communities. We are your children, not your warriors, and we should not be your martyrs.
