The flat, now scrubbed clean of Barty, became their haven again. Barty, according to Effie, was settling in nicely and was well on his way to becoming a good boy. 

“Er, James mate, why on earth is my brother’s ex at your parents’ place?” Sirius asked when he came to pick out seat covers one afternoon. 

“Because he tried to move back in with Reg, and Mum convinced him to go with her. She’s trying to make him a better man.”

“I thought Reg owned that flat?”

“Barty kicked in half the deposit and half of the mortgage for the six months he was living there.”

“Well, how much is all that then?” Sirius asked. James could see him trying to do some calculations in his head. James saved him the effort and told him. 

“About 30k.”

“Damn,” Sirius said, blowing out a whistle. “Can we pay it?”

James shook his head. 

“I already offered to loan Reg the money. I’d just give it to him if I thought he’d accept it.”

“Why don’t you, me, and your parents unite and give him 10k each? That way it’s not such a big sum from one of us.”

“He’d never go for that, especially from my parents,” James sighed. He’d thought of that one earlier. 

“Alright, I’ll give it to him then, just me, he can’t argue that.”

“He can, and he has. He’s already warned me not to ask you to be the middleman.”

Sirius threw his hands up in defeat. 

“He’s hopeless— stubborn little git. We need someone who he wouldn’t feel beholden to. Someone he’d happily accept money from.” Sirius tapped his long fingers to his chin and then inhaled so quickly he choked on his own spit. “I’ve got it!” he spluttered. “Uncle Alphard!”

“Er, Sirius, isn't your Uncle Alphard dead?” James asked, certain he was correct. 

“Yes, he is, but he left me some money when he died. I could say he left some money for Reggie in my keeping until his twenty-first birthday, which just so happens to be next week!”

It was a plan, and James thought it might just work.
