the thing about mr darcy. is that everything he does he does because of his eldest sibling syndrome. it's so important that he has a younger sister and it's so important that she's 16 and it's so important that their parents are dead. it's so important that georgaina is friendly and cheerful and that he hates everyone. it's so important that he loathes wickham for what he did to her and gets involved to stop him from destroying lizzy's younger sister's life. it's so important that he moves bingley away because he thinks he's about to get his heart broken. it's so important that bingley is a lot like georgiana. like seriously darcy is an asshole because he's an eldest sibling and he's so so sweet because he's an eldest sibling that's the whole point

I am going to try and make an argument that we have canonical evidence that Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have a decent sex life. We have that quote that says they tried for a boy long after Lydia, however, I think it's also telling that Mrs. Bennet does not seem to understand how much her husband dislikes her. I think it makes total sense for her to think something like, "Well he still comes to my bedchamber at night, therefore it must be fine." I think she'd be worried if he stopped. But then again, maybe she would just think they were getting old...
Maybe not the strongest argument, but I could really see her judging marriage quality by bedroom activities and disregarding or not totally grasping everything else that indicates their marriage is actually quite bad.
honestly that makes perfect sense to me. she's explicitly noted to be beautiful/have been beautiful (and assuming marriage at or before 18, she's probably barely 40 which is plenty young to still be a looker). she doesn't really register Mr Bennet's insults and baiting as anything out of the ordinary, and he's not the sort of guy who's ever been physically abusive (too much effort, especially when insults/ridicule do the trick just fine). and he's a very complacent sort of man who probably continues going to bed with her out of habit and he because he enjoys sleeping with an attractive woman. and, let's be real, there's no way the dude is leaving the sanctuary of his library long enough to have affairs
by Regency standards, she could have it a lot worse (although i do wonder what the relationship between her parents was like that she sees constant and often public ridicule/insults/bullying as just sort of a habit her husband has that's nothing to be worried or offended by) shame he couldn't spend some of the time he was banging the wife he hates saving money for their children's future instead he should have set up a "swear jar" style arrangement. every time he sleeps with his wife, he puts a pound in the jar for future dowries

Col F: It just kinda came up, but don't worry, I told her to keep it secret because it would be bad if the lady's family found out about it.
Darcy *sweating*: Yes...that would be bad...
Col F *laughing*: Yikes, can you imagine?
Darcy: I'm really trying not to...
I just went back to the two chapters of Pride and Prejudice directly after Wickham tells his lies to Elizabeth – Chapter 17, where she talks with Jane about it, and Chapter 18, the Netherfield Ball – because I was reminded of the fact that within those chapters, Elizabeth gets advice about Wickham and Darcy by three other young women. First Jane, who is reluctant to believe the worst of Darcy; then Charlotte, who encourages Elizabeth to dance with Darcy and urges her not to be led away from him by her preference for Wickham; and finally Caroline Bingley, who plainly tells her that Wickham is a scoundrel who did Darcy wrong, not vice-versa.
All three of their viewpoints turn out to be right, but all three are "right for the wrong reasons." Jane wants to think well of Darcy because she wants to think well of everyone, and she doesn't suspect that Wickham is lying, but thinks he must be mistaken about Darcy's actions, because she wants to think well of Wickham too. Charlotte is only being pragmatic and thinking of Darcy's status and wealth, not his character. And Caroline ends her speech about Wickham's villainy with blatant classism, by adding that of course it's to be expected from a man of such low birth.
In the post I recently reblogged defending Elizabeth from Austen fans who accuse her of so many wrongdoings, one of the arguments was against the idea that she should have listened to Jane and Caroline, because between Jane's naïve idealism and Caroline's snobbery, their opinions at that point really do ring hollow.
Except now, having reread those chapters, I'm not sure if I fully agree. Amid Jane's simple idealism, she does make one sound argument: that Bingley, a man whom they know is genuinely kind and decent, is Darcy's close friend. Maybe Elizabeth should have more strongly considered that fact instead of deciding so easily that Bingley must be deceived by Darcy. Indeed, after Darcy's letter, she does realize that his friendship with Bingley would make no sense if he were really the monster Wickham painted him as. And everything Caroline says about Wickham and Darcy's history turns out to be true: she just puts her own classist spin on the story at the very end.
I suppose this shows the cleverness of Austen's writing. If Jane, Charlotte, and Caroline were to give Elizabeth unquestionably good advice, but Elizabeth still ignored them, Elizabeth would seem less smart and be harder to sympathize with. But because their advice has obvious flaws, both Elizabeth and first-time readers have good reason to disregard it. Yet they still turn out to have been right about Darcy while Elizabeth was deceived.
I think this is where Jane Austen is very masterful, Elizabeth learns the truth, but from very questionable sources. It's not something she can really bring up with Darcy in casual conversation (so hey, did you disown your father's godson?) The misunderstanding is so well done and it doesn't feel contrived. Elizabeth not really believing was very normal and human.

AITA for killing my fiancée?
not as bad at it sounds. i (25M) recently got engaged to this awesome girl (23F) who is probably like the sweetest lady that ever i looked on. my friend (31M) set us up and we just immediately hit it off and pretty soon we were talking about getting married. her dad (55M) and cousin (26F) liked me a lot, i got along with them well, everything was going great until a few days before the wedding. my friend’s brother (29M) came to me privately and basically told me that my fiancée was cheating on me. i could not believe this but we went outside her window THE NIGHT BEFORE OUR WEDDING and i saw her making out with some other guy. obviously i was devastated. i didn’t confront her then because i decided to do it at the wedding. i decided everyone needed to know exactly why i wasn’t marrying her. so when the priest asked if i came to marry this girl I said “no” and explained in front of everyone that she had been cheating on me with absolutely zero shame. obviously i was really upset about this and yelling and kind of pushed her to the ground. she was freaking out and said she had no idea what i was talking about but i literally saw her with my own eyes. she kept telling me she did not know what was going on and she was crying and then she passed out. i left. a few days later i run into another friend (28M) and he tells me that my fiancée fucking DIED after i left the church. how was i supposed to know that would happen???? i thought she just passed out!!! he is FURIOUS about this i guess because now he’s dating my fiancée’s cousin (??) and now my fiancée’s dad wants me to marry his niece (??) to make up for what I’ve done??? tbh guys im really lost but i saw what happened!!! she was literally with another guy!! i feel like i wasnt at fault here.
